    Challenges and science-based implications for modern management and conservation of European ungulate populations

    The Changing Landscape for Stroke\ua0Prevention in AF: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry Phase 2

    Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase 1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age  6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score  652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc = 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N = 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in Asia and North America.     Using Twitter in Ukrainian sociology majors training

    The article deals with the problem of using cloud technologies in the training of sociology students in Ukraine. The popularity of Twitter in Ukraine is analyzed. The possibilities of using Twitter as a learning tool in classroom are discussed. List of recommended tweeters, including Ukrainian resources as well as resources related to population censuses is proposed. The article offers examples of student activities for Social Statistics and Demographics courses. The article demonstrates that new forms of student’s activity related to data analysis introduced by academics and practitioners (building art objects and storytelling based on data; shared data collection by citizens through mobile devices, “play with data” modern data visualization services) can be realized with Twitter resources and can help overcome the barriers that arise while studying quantitative methods

    Analysis of In Vivo Radachlorin Accumulation through FLIM-Assisted Examination of Ex Vivo Histological Samples

    We report an investigation of the in vivo accumulation of Radachlorin photosensitizer in a murine model in several types of normal and tumor tissues based on an FLIM-assisted analysis of fluorescence intensity images, time-resolved fluorescence signals, and phasor plots. Experiments were performed on ex vivo histological samples of normal and tumor tissues. It was shown that the investigation of fluorescence intensity distributions combined with that of time-resolved fluorescence images can be used for qualitative and—under some limitations—quantitative analyses of the relative uptake of this photosensitizer in tissues. The phasor plot representations of time-resolved fluorescence signals were shown to be suitable for identification of the accumulation of predominant photosensitizers in tissues

    Prediction of first-year corrosion losses of copper and aluminum in continental regions

    The dose-response functions (DRFs) developed for the prediction of first-year corrosion losses of copper and aluminum (K1) in continental regions are presented. The development of DRFs is based on the stablished dependences of the corrosion losses of these metals on SO2 concentration: K = f([SO2]). Experimental data on the atmosphere corrosivity and corrosion losses of the metals in a one-year exposure period according to ISOCORRAG and UN/ECE international programs, the Russian program, and МICAT project were used. Comparisons of the predicted K1 values obtained by three different DRFs with experimental K1 values are presented. These DRFs are analyzed in terms of the coefficients they contain

    Optimization of Energy Production from Two-Stage Mesophilic–Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Cheese Whey Using a Response Surface Methodology Approach

    Spatial separation into acidogenic and methanogenic stages is considered a viable option to ensure process stability, energy efficiency and the better control of key anaerobic digestion (AD) parameters. The elucidation of the optimal modes of two-stage AD for the maximization of the recovery of biofuels (H2 and CH4) is still an urgent task, the main optimization criteria being the highest energy yield (EY) and energy production rate (EPR). In this work, a response surface methodology was used for an optimization of energy production from the two-stage mesophilic–thermophilic AD of cheese whey (CW). Three dilution rates of CW, providing values of 10.9, 14.53 and 21.8 g for the chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L in the influent and three hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (1, 2 and 3 days) in methanogenic biofilters at a constant HRT in an acidogenic biofilter of 0.42 days, were tested to optimize the EY and EPR. The desirability approach produced combined optimum conditions as follows: the dilution rate of the CW provided 17.58 g COD/L (corresponding to OLR of 6.5 g COD/(L·day)) in the influent and a HRT in the methanogenic biofilter of 2.28 days, both of which provided a maximum EPR of 80.263 kJ/(L·day) and EY of 9.56 kJ/g COD, with an overall desirability value of 0.883

    The Start-Up of Continuous Biohydrogen Production from Cheese Whey: Comparison of Inoculum Pretreatment Methods and Reactors with Moving and Fixed Polyurethane Carriers

    This article presents the results of the start-up of continuous production of biohydrogen from cheese whey (CW) in an anaerobic filter (AF) and anaerobic fluidized bed (AFB) with a polyurethane carrier. Heat and acid pretreatments were used for the inactivation of hydrogen-scavengers in the inoculum (mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic sludge). Acid pretreatment was effective for thermophilic anaerobic sludge to suppress methanogenic activity, and heat treatment was effective for mesophilic anaerobic sludge. Maximum specific yields of hydrogen, namely 178 mL/g chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 149 mL/g COD for AFB and AF, respectively, were obtained at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4.5 days and organic load rate (OLR) of 6.61 kg COD/(m3 day). At the same time, the maximum hydrogen production rates of 1.28 and 1.9 NL/(L day) for AF and AFB, respectively, were obtained at the HRT of 2.02 days and OLR of 14.88 kg COD/(m3 day). At the phylum level, the dominant taxa were Firmicutes (65% in AF and 60% in AFB), and at the genus level, Lactobacillus (40% in AF and 43% in AFB) and Bifidobacterium (24% in AF and 30% in AFB)
