Nowadays, the allergies in humans, that consuming marine products, are increasing and cephalopods are not an exception. Octopus is a food which may result in allergy symptoms because of essentially to tropomyosin in composition. Another problem is cross-allergy provoked by manipulation during fishing of different species from different groups (crustacean, fishes, molluscs) and manipulation of animals captured and recipients used aboard. For this study two Portuguese zones were chosen that were famous for octopus fishing by using pots and traps. The methodology used consisted in a presential survey/interview and observation method. The results demonstrated that the majority haven't heard about seafood or cephalopods allergy. Some procedures aboard aren’t avoided cross reaction allergy and can even promote the occurrence of it. Is necessary and urgent to give in-formation to the fishermen about allergen problems and correct some behaviors aboard.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Octopus fishermen have a high rate of allergy sensitization to this species

Food allergy is an increasing worldwide problem. Food sensitization can occur by skin contact due to professional exposure and lead to clinical allergy, but data are sparse. In the Portuguese population diet, Octopus is usually fished and consumed. The major allergen (Oct v 1) in the muscle of the octopus Octopus vulgaris is tropomyosin, a highly conserved muscle protein with cross-reactivity between molluscs (bivalves, cephalopods, or gastropod) and also with arthropods (crustacea, insects and dust mites). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of allergic sensitization to Octopus vulgaris on fishermen that captures it and establish its clinical relevance of it. It was applied a survey concerned to respiratory and food allergy. Skin prick tests with aeroallergens extracts and prick -to- prick skin tests with octopus were performed. The sample was 17 fishermen from a village that mainly capture of octopus, using pots and traps. Like in general population, 29% of fishermen have dust mite sensitization, but 35% of them has octopus sensitization, instead of the expected sensitization rate lower than 5%. Also, there was no significant correlation with dust mites sensitization (spearman rank order correlation p˂0,05). Our results show a higher prevalence rate, unrelated with dust mites sensitization, and probably due to professional exposure. This is the first study with octopus’ fishermen in Portugal. Larger studies with a molecular profile should be performed in order to establish the clinical relevance of this data and the healthcare impact of it.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Insulin Reverses D-Glucose–Increased Nitric Oxide and Reactive Oxygen Species Generation in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Vascular tone is controlled by the L-arginine/nitric oxide (NO) pathway, and NO bioavailability is strongly affected by hyperglycaemia-induced oxidative stress. Insulin leads to high expression and activity of human cationic amino acid transporter 1 (hCAT-1), NO synthesis and vasodilation; thus, a protective role of insulin on high D-glucose–alterations in endothelial function is likely. Vascular reactivity to U46619 (thromboxane A2 mimetic) and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) was measured in KCl preconstricted human umbilical vein rings (wire myography) incubated in normal (5 mmol/L) or high (25 mmol/L) D-glucose. hCAT-1, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), 42 and 44 kDa mitogen-activated protein kinases (p42/44mapk), protein kinase B/Akt (Akt) expression and activity were determined by western blotting and qRT-PCR, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) level was determined by HPLC, and L-arginine transport (0–1000 μmol/L) was measured in response to 5–25 mmol/L D-glucose (0–36 hours) in passage 2 human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Assays were in the absence or presence of insulin and/or apocynin (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase [NADPH oxidase] inhibitor), tempol or Mn(III)TMPyP (SOD mimetics). High D-glucose increased hCAT-1 expression and activity, which was biphasic (peaks: 6 and 24 hours of incubation). High D-glucose–increased maximal transport velocity was blocked by insulin and correlated with lower hCAT-1 expression and SLC7A1 gene promoter activity. High D-glucose–increased transport parallels higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) and superoxide anion (O2•–) generation, and increased U46619-contraction and reduced CGRP-dilation of vein rings. Insulin and apocynin attenuate ROS and O2•– generation, and restored vascular reactivity to U46619 and CGRP. Insulin, but not apocynin or tempol reversed high D-glucose–increased NO synthesis; however, tempol and Mn(III)TMPyP reversed the high D-glucose–reduced BH4 level. Insulin and tempol blocked the high D-glucose–increased p42/44mapk phosphorylation. Vascular dysfunction caused by high D-glucose is likely attenuated by insulin through the L-arginine/NO and O2•–/NADPH oxidase pathways. These findings are of interest for better understanding vascular dysfunction in states of foetal insulin resistance and hyperglycaemia

U radu su proučeni profili proteolize u argentinskom ovčjem siru napravljenim dvjema metodama proizvodnje kako bi se dobile tipične i definirane karakteristike. Proizvedeni su sirevi s mikrobnom kulturom Streptococcus thermophilus (S-sirevi) i sirevi s miješanom mikrobnom kulturom Streptococcus thermophilus i Lactobacillus bulgaricus (L-sirevi). In this work the proteolysis profile of Argentinean sheep cheeses made by two production methods were studied in order to develop products with typical and defined features. Cheeses with a starter of Streptococcus thermophilus, (S-cheeses) and cheeses with a mixed starter of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, (L-cheeses) were manufactured. The cheeses were ripened at 12oC and 80% relative humidity for 180 days and samples were taken throughout this period. Results show similarities but also some differences, especially in pH value, while sensory evaluation indicated important differences between the two types of cheeses. S-cheeses had a low proteolysis and soft flavor, making them appropriate for consumption after a short ripening time. L-cheeses had a higher proteolysis level and more intense sensory characteristics, making them appropriate for consumption after a longer ripening time

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify arsenite-oxidizing halobacteria in samples obtained from Salar de Punta Negra, II Region of Chile. Seven bacterial isolates, numbered as isolates I to VII, grown in a culture medium with 100 ppm as NaAsO(2) (As (III)) were tested. Bacterial growth kinetics and the percent of arsenite removal (PAR) were performed simultaneously with the detection of an arsenite oxidase enzyme through Dot Blot analysis. RESULTS: An arsenite oxidase enzyme was detected in all isolates, expressed constitutively after 10 generations grown in the absence of As (III). Bacterial growth kinetics and corresponding PAR values showed significant fluctuations over time. PARs close to 100% were shown by isolates V, VI, and VII, at different times of the bacterial growth phase; while isolate II showed PAR values around 40%, remaining constant over time. CONCLUSION: Halobacteria from Salar de Punta Negra showed promising properties as arsenite removers under control conditions, incubation time being a critical parameter

The production cross-section of B+ mesons is measured as a function of transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in proton--proton collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using 2.4 fb-1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The differential production cross-sections, determined in the range 9<pT<120 GeV and y<2.25, are compared to next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions.Peer Reviewe

Dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at (s)=7\sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
The dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-^1. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet bin-averaged cross sections are presented as functions of photon transverse energy, jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. In addition, the bin-averaged cross sections as functions of the difference between the azimuthal angles of the photon and the jet, the photon-jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon-jet centre-of-mass frame have been measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements and provide a good description of the data, except for the case of the azimuthal opening angle.Peer Reviewe
