Restauração e imprensa no Algarve (1808-1811): um impressor, a independência de duas nações

A história da tipografia em Portugal teve no Algarve um dos seus berços. Em Faro, a 9 de Tamuz de 5247 (30 de Junho de 1487), Samuel Gacon acabou de imprimir o Pentateuco, iniciando uma considerável marcha de produções tipográficas sob mão hebraica, que se expandiu por outros núcleos judaicos, nomeadamente, em Lisboa e em Leiria. Contudo, a expulsão da comunidade judaica, por decreto de 1496, determinou, para a região, o fim da sua epopeia artístico-tipográfica. Nos séculos seguintes, a actividade circunscreveu-se a Lisboa, Évora, Coimbra, Porto e Braga e o impresso passou a ser encarado, sobretudo nos séculos XVII e XVIII, como referem João Luís Lisboa e Tiago Miranda: «como melhor forma de conservar a memória das obras e marcar uma vantagem social». Engineered MRI nanoprobes based on superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

This project aimed to engineer new T2 MRI contrast agents for cell labeling based on formulations containing monodisperse iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) coated with natural and synthetic polymers. Monodisperse MNP capped with hydrophobic ligands were synthesized by a thermal decomposition method, and further stabilized in aqueous media with citric acid or meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) through a ligand exchange reaction. Hydrophilic MNP-DMSA, with optimal hydrodynamic size distribution, colloidal stability and magnetic properties, were used for further functionalization with different coating materials. A covalent coupling strategy was devised to bind the biopolymer gum Arabic (GA) onto MNPDMSA and produce an efficient contrast agent, which enhanced cellular uptake in human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT116 cell line) compared to uncoated MNP-DMSA. A similar protocol was employed to coat MNP-DMSA with a novel biopolymer produced by a biotechnological process, the exopolysaccharide (EPS) Fucopol. Similar to MNP-DMSA-GA, MNP-DMSA-EPS improved cellular uptake in HCT116 cells compared to MNP-DMSA. However, MNP-DMSA-EPS were particularly efficient towards the neural stem/progenitor cell line ReNcell VM, for which a better iron dose-dependent MRI contrast enhancement was obtained at low iron concentrations and short incubation times. A combination of synthetic and biological coating materials was also explored in this project, to design a dynamic tumortargeting nanoprobe activated by the acidic pH of tumors. The pH-dependent affinity pair neutravidin/iminobiotin, was combined in a multilayer architecture with the synthetic polymers poy-L-lysine and poly(ethylene glycol) and yielded an efficient MRI nanoprobe with ability to distinguish cells cultured in acidic pH conditions form cells cultured in physiological pH conditions

Gelatin immobilized growing yeast cells: changes in the glycosylation level of external invertase and cell wall composition

Free and gelatin immobilized yeast cells from two different strains were analyzed by means of SDS-PAGE as regards: i) the glycosylation levels of external invertase before and after treatment with endo-beta-N-acetylglycosaminidase (Endo H), ii) the pattern of mannoproteins released from the cell wall after extraction with SDS, beta-mercaptoethanol and Zymoliase digestion. The results obtain suggest that the composition and structure of the cell wall is modified when cell growth takes place in the state of immobilization

Impact of China-Pakistan economic investment on volatility of stock exchanges in Pakistan and Shanghai

This paper aims to analyze the impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor on the volatility of the Pakistan Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchanges, namely, to explore the pre and post-impact China investments in Pakistan in the energy sector on the stock exchanges of the respective countries. The methods used include an econo- metric analysis, and univariate statistical analysis, from February 2010 to January 2020. The results present a significant difference in volatilities of the pre and post-returns of both indices. Stock prices increased post-CPEC announcement in Pakistan, and there was a growth in the stock market. However, the mean return post-CPEC announcement is relatively lower than Pre-announcement tenure, combined with higher volatility. It shows small investors’ underconfidence. UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020Desde o início do presente século, os movimentos “acesso aberto” e “ciência aberta” passaram a integrar as preocupações das instituições científicas portuguesas. Tais iniciativas apresentam-se como “novas” formas de produzir e partilhar o conhecimento entre a comunidade científica e a sociedade, visando aumentar o impacto socioeconómico da ciência. No entanto, a verdade é que as preocupações com a difusão da ciência são tão antigas como a própria ciência moderna. Neste artigo, pretendemos dar a conhecer o contexto de emergência de instituições, espaços, agentes e meios de comunicação científica na província do Algarve, concentrando-nos na Sociedade Agrícola do Algarve e no estudo do período da sua constituição (1848-1850). Apoiamo-nos na metodologia qualitativa, suportada pela investigação documental para procedermos à revisão de literatura e identificarmos as fontes de informação primária, cuja análise e seleção nos permitem identificar o quadro organizacional, a missão e fins da Sociedade, o grupo de sócios fundadores, a agenda e os meios de ação definidos. Concluímos que, no dealbar da segunda metade do século XIX, o Algarve construiu uma geografia e uma comunidade do Saber, com amplitude municipal, que teve na Sociedade Agrícola do Algarve o centro de referência para a produção e disseminação do conhecimento cientificamente dirigido, fortalecendo o processo de co-construção de uma província e de um país mais prósperos e culturalmente mais desenvolvidos.publishersversionpublishe

Abandono escolar em contextos sociais desfavorecidos: desenho de um programa de prevenção com base numa avaliação de necessidades

Como se pode contribuir para a redução da taxa de abandono escolar por parte dos jovens inseridos em contextos sociais multidesafiantes, é a questão central deste trabalho. Considerando as consequências, não só para o sujeito, mas igualmente para o desenvolvimento social e económico do país, é necessário conhecer os fatores de risco que levam a este fenómeno com o objetivo de serem implementadas estratégias com vista à prevenção. Numa primeira fase, foi efetuada uma avaliação de necessidades junto de 32 alunos, cinco professoras, duas técnicas e um membro da direção de um Agrupamento de Escolas abrangido pelo "Programa Território Educativo de Intervenção Prioritário" (TEIP), com o objetivo de explorar as suas perceções sobre os fatores explicativos que estão na origem deste fenómeno, estratégias de prevenção implementadas na escola em questão e ideias de como se pode prevenir esta problemática. Para o efeito foram realizadas seis entrevistas de grupo e oito individuais. Em termos globais os resultados indicam que os alunos referem como variáveis associadas ao abandono sobretudo a desmotivação, comportamentos de risco e perigo e bullying, enquanto os professores parecem focar-se em variáveis do contexto socioeconómico, variáveis do contexto familiar e cultura. Considerando a literatura e a avaliação de necessidades realizada, é proposto, num segundo momento, um programa de prevenção que procura envolver toda a comunidade escolar e famílias, que possa ser útil a escolas com as mesmas características da escola envolvida neste estudo.The central question of this research is how to contribute to the reduction of the dropout rate among young people inserted in multi-challenging social contexts. Considering the consequences of school dropout, not only for the subject, but also for the social and economic development of the country, it is necessary to know the risk factors that lead to this phenomenon with the aim of implementing measures for prevention. In a first stage, a needs assessment was carried out among students and teachers of a group of schools covered by the program "Território Educativo de Intervenção Prioritário (Educational Territory of Priority Intervention)”, TEIP, in order to explore the perceptions of these actors on the explanatory factors that are in the origin of this phenomenon. In a second moment, the research project aims to design a program that contributes to the drop-out rate reduction, focusing, essentially, on children of the second cycle (from 10 to 12 years old). Six group interviews and eight individual interviews were carried out. Overall, the results indicate that the perception of students and teachers is, in some respects, quite distanced. Considering the literature and needs assessment carried out, it is proposed a prevention program that seeks to involve the whole school community and families, which can be useful to schools with the same characteristics of the school involved in this study
