    Prograde and retrograde history of eclogites from the Eastern Blue Ridge, North Carolina, USA

    The prograde metamorphism of eclogites is typically obscured by chemical equilibration at peak conditions and by partial requilibration during retrograde metamorphism. Eclogites from the Eastern Blue Ridge of North Carolina retain evidence of their prograde path in the form of inclusions preserved in garnet. These eclogites, from the vicinity of Bakersville, North Carolina, USA are primarily comprised of garnet–clinopyroxene–rutile–hornblende–plagioclase–quartz. Quartz, clinopyroxene, hornblende, rutile, epidote, titanite and biotite are found as inclusions in garnet cores. Included hornblende and clinopyroxene are chemically distinct from their matrix counterparts. Thermobarometry of inclusion sets from different garnets record different conditions. Inclusions of clinozoisite, titanite, rutile and quartz (clinozoisite + titanite = grossular + rutile + quartz + H 2 O) yield pressures (6–10 kbar, 400–600 °C and 8–12 kbar 450–680 °C) at or below the minimum peak conditions from matrix phases (10–13 kbar at 600–800 °C). Inclusions of hornblende, biotite and quartz give higher pressures (13–16 kbar and 630–660 °C). Early matrix pyroxene is partially or fully broken down to a diopside–plagioclase symplectite, and both garnet and pyroxene are rimmed with plagioclase and hornblende. Hypersthene is found as a minor phase in some diopside + plagioclase symplectites, which suggests retrogression through the granulite facies. Two-pyroxene thermometry of this assemblage gives a temperature of c. 750 °C. Pairing the most Mg-rich garnet composition with the assemblage plagioclase–diopside–hypersthene–quartz gives pressures of 14–16 kbar at this temperature. The hornblende–plagioclase–garnet rim–quartz assemblage yields 9–12 kbar and 500–550 °C. The combined P–T data show a clockwise loop from the amphibolite to eclogite to granulite facies, all of which are overprinted by a texturally late amphibolite facies assemblage.     Deep Observation of the Giant Radio Lobes of Centaurus A with the Fermi Large Area Telescope

    The detection of high energy (HE) {\gamma}-ray emission up to about 3 GeV from the giant lobes of the radio galaxy Centaurus A has been recently reported by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration based on ten months of all-sky survey observations. A data set more than three times larger is used here to study the morphology and photon spectrum of the lobes with higher statistics. The larger data set results in the detection of HE {\gamma}-ray emission (up to about 6 GeV) from the lobes with a significance of more than 10 and 20 {\sigma} for the North and the South lobe, respectively. Based on a detailed spatial analysis and comparison with the associated radio lobes, we report evidence for a substantial extension of the HE {\gamma}-ray emission beyond the WMAP radio image in the case of the Northern lobe of Cen A. We reconstruct the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the lobes using radio (WMAP) and Fermi-LAT data from the same integration region. The implications are discussed in the context of hadronic and leptonic scenarios

    Complex Instantons and Charged Rotating Black Hole Pair Creation

    We consider the general process of pair-creation of charged rotating black holes. We find that instantons which describe this process are necessarily complex due to regularity requirements.     Detecting Change in the Urban Road Environment Along a Route Based on Traffic Sign and Crossroad Data

    Occurrences of traffic signs that belong to certain sign categories and occurrences of crossroads of various topologies are utilized in detecting change in the urban road environment that moves past an ego-car. Three urban environment types, namely downtown, residential and industrial/commercial areas, are considered in the study and changes between these are to be detected. In the preparatory phase, the ego-car is used for traffic sign and crossroads data collection. In the application phase, the ego-car hosts an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that captures and analyzes images of the road environment and computes the required input data to the proposed road environment detection (RoED) subsystem. A statistical inference method relying on the minimum description length (MDL) principle was applied to the change detection problem at hand. The above occurrences along a route are seen as a realization of an inhomogeneous marked Poisson process. Page-Hinkley change detectors tuned to empirical data were set to work to detect change in the urban road environment.     Can the Mechanism for π1ηπ,ηπ\pi_1\to \eta\pi,\eta'\pi Hybrid Decays be Detected?

    Two mechanisms for the π1\pi_1 (JPC=1+J^{PC}=1^{-+}) hybrid meson decay processes π1ηπ,ηπ\pi_1\to\eta\pi,\eta'\pi are investigated. These mechanisms are applied to ϕηγ,ηγ\phi\to\eta\gamma,\eta'\gamma and J/ψηγ,ηγJ/\psi\to\eta\gamma,\eta'\gamma decays to illustrate the validity of the decay mechanisms and to obtain independent information on the coupling of η,η\eta,\eta' to quark and gluonic operators. From this information, we find that Γ(π1ηπ)/Γ(π1ηπ)\Gamma(\pi_1\to\eta\pi)/\Gamma(\pi_1\to\eta'\pi) is substantially different in the two decay mechanisms, and hence future experimental measurements of this ratio will provide valuable information for substantiating the hybrid nature of these states and for determining the mechanism for these hybrid decays.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 1 eps figure embedded in manuscript.     Black hole thermodynamics with generalized uncertainty principle

    In the standard viewpoint, the temperature of a stationary black hole is proportional to its surface gravity, TH=κ/2πT_H=\hbar\kappa/2\pi. This is a semiclassical result and the quantum gravity effects are not taken into consideration. This Letter explores a unified expression for the black hole temperature in the sense of a generalized uncertainty principle(GUP). Our discussion involves a heuristic analysis of a particle which is absorbed by the black hole. Besides a class of static and spherically symmetric black holes, an axially symmetric Kerr-Newman black hole is considered. Different from the existing literature, we suggest that the black hole's irreducible mass represent the characteristic size in the absorption process.     Since the nature of pairing interactions is manifested in the superconducting gap symmetry, the exact gap structure, particularly any deviation from the simple d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry, would help elucidating the pairing mechanism in high-T_c cuprates. Anisotropic heat transport measurement in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+\delta} (Bi-2212) reveals that the quasiparticle populations are different for the two nodal directions and thus the gap structure must be uniquely anisotropic, suggesting that pairing is governed by interactions with a rather complicated anisotropy. Intriguingly, it is found that the "plateau" in the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity is observed only in the b-axis transport.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Bounce and cyclic cosmology in extended nonlinear massive gravity

    We investigate non-singular bounce and cyclic cosmological evolutions in a universe governed by the extended nonlinear massive gravity, in which the graviton mass is promoted to a scalar-field potential. The extra freedom of the theory can lead to certain energy conditions violations and drive cyclicity with two different mechanisms: either with a suitably chosen scalar-field potential under a given Stuckelberg-scalar function, or with a suitably chosen Stuckelberg-scalar function under a given scalar-field potential. Our analysis shows that extended nonlinear massive gravity can alter significantly the evolution of the universe at both early and late times.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, version published at JCA

    Fibromatosis-like carcinoma-an unusual phenotype of a metaplastic breast tumor associated with a micropapilloma

    BACKGROUND: Fibromatosis-like metaplastic carcinoma is a newly described metaplastic breast tumor, literature on which is still evolving. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old lady presented with a 2 × 2 cm mass with irregular margins in the upper and outer quadrant of left breast. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from the lump was inconclusive. A lumpectomy was performed and sent for frozen section, which revealed presence of spindle cells showing mild atypia in a sclerotic stroma. The tumor cells revealed prominent infiltration into the adjacent fat. A differential diagnosis of a low-grade sarcoma vs. a metaplastic carcinoma, favoring the former, was offered. Final histology sections revealed an infiltrating tumor with predominant spindle cells in a collagenous background, simulating a fibromatosis. Adjacent to the tumor were foci of benign ductal hyperplasia and a micropapilloma. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed diffuse co-expression of epithelial markers i.e. cytokeratins (CK, HMWCK, CK7) and EMA along with a mesenchymal marker i.e. vimentin in the tumor cells. Myoepithelial markers (SMA and p63) showed focal positivity. A diagnosis of a low-grade fibromatosis-like carcinoma breast associated with a micropapilloma was formed. CONCLUSION: Fibromatosis-like carcinoma is a rare form of a metaplastic breast tumor. This diagnosis requires an index of suspicion while dealing with spindle cell breast tumors. The importance of making this diagnosis to facilitate an intra operative surgical planning is marred by diagnostic difficulties. In such cases, IHC is imperative in forming an objective diagnosis
