Dynamical system modeling via signal reduction and neural network simulation
Many dynamical systems tested in the field and the laboratory display significant nonlinear behavior. Accurate characterization of such systems requires modeling in a nonlinear framework. One construct forming a basis for nonlinear modeling is that of the artificial neural network (ANN). However, when system behavior is complex, the amount of data required to perform training can become unreasonable. The authors reduce the complexity of information present in system response measurements using decomposition via canonical variate analysis. They describe a method for decomposing system responses, then modeling the components with ANNs. A numerical example is presented, along with conclusions and recommendations

Application of the bootstrap to the analysis of vibration test data
Structural dynamic testing is concerned with estimation of system properties, including frequency response functions and modal characteristics. These properties are derived from tests on the structure of interest, during which excitations and responses are measured and Fourier techniques are used to reduce the data. The inputs used in a test are frequently radom and excite random responses in the structure of interest. When these random inputs and responses are analyzed they yield estimates of system properties that are random variable and random process realizations. Of course, such estimates of system properties vary randomly from one test to another, but even when deterministic inputs are used to excite a structure, the estimated properties vary from test to test. When test excitations and responses are normally distributed, classical techniques permit us to statistically analyze inputs, responses, and system parameters. However, when the input excitations are non-normal, the system is nonlinear, and/or the property of interest is anything but the simplest, the classical analyses break down. The bootstrap is a technique for the statistical analysis of data that are not necessarily normally distributed. It can be used to statistically analyze any measure of input excitation on response, or any system property, when data are available to make an estimate. It is designed to estimate the standard error, bias, and confidence intervals of parameter estimates. This paper shows how the bootstrap can be applied to the statistical analysis of modal parameters
Comparative Ground Validation of IMERG and TMPA at Variable Spatiotemporal Scales in the Tropical Andes
An initial ground validation of the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) Day-1 product from March 2014 to August 2015 is presented for the tropical Andes. IMERG was evaluated along with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) against 302 quality-controlled rain gauges across Ecuador and Peru. Detection, quantitative estimation statistics, and probability distribution functions are calculated at different spatial (0.1°, 0.25°) and temporal (1 h, 3 h, daily) scales. Precipitation products are analyzed for hydrometeorologically distinct subregions. Results show that IMERG has a superior detection and quantitative rainfall intensity estimation ability than TMPA, particularly in the high Andes. Despite slightly weaker agreement of mean rainfall fields, IMERG shows better characterization of gauge observations when separating rainfall detection and rainfall rate estimation. At corresponding space–time scales, IMERG shows better estimation of gauge rainfall probability distributions than TMPA. However, IMERG shows no improvement in both rainfall detection and rainfall rate estimation along the dry Peruvian coastline, where major random and systematic errors persist. Further research is required to identify which rainfall intensities are missed or falsely detected and how errors can be attributed to specific satellite sensor retrievals. The satellite–gauge difference was associated with the point-area difference in spatial support between gauges and satellite precipitation products, particularly in areas with low and irregular gauge network coverage. Future satellite–gauge evaluations need to identify such locations and investigate more closely interpixel point-area differences before attributing uncertainties to satellite products

Characterization of nonlinear dynamic systems using artificial neural networks
The efficient characterization of nonlinear systems is an important goal of vibration and model testing. The authors build a nonlinear system model based on the acceleration time series response of a single input, multiple output system. A series of local linear models are used as a template to train artificial neutral networks (ANNs). The trained ANNs map measured time series responses into states of a nonlinear system. Another NN propagates response states in time, and a third ANN inverts the original map, transforming states into acceleration predictions in the measurement domain. The technique is illustrated using a nonlinear oscillator, in which quadratic and cubic stiffness terms play a major part in the system`s response. Reasonable maps are obtained for the states, and accurate, long-term response predictions are made for data outside the training data set
Analysis of water distribution network under pressure-deficient conditions through emitter setting
Pressure-driven analysis (PDA) of water distribution networks necessitates
an assessment of the supplying capacity of a network within the minimum and required
pressure ranges. Pressure-deficient conditions happen due to the uncertainty
of nodal demands, failure of electromechanical components, diversion of
water, aging of pipes, permanent increase in the demand at certain supply
nodes, fire demand, etc. As the demand-driven analysis (DDA) solves the
governing equations without any bound on pressure head, it fails to replicate
the real scenario, particularly when the network experiences pressure-deficient situations. Numerous researchers formulated different
head–discharge relations and used them iteratively with demand-driven
software, while some other approaches solve them by incorporating this
relation within the analysis algorithms. Several attempts have been made by
adding fictitious network elements like reservoirs, check valves (CVs), flow
control valves (FCVs), emitters, dummy nodes and pipes of negligible length (i.e.,
negligible pressure loss) to assess the supplying capability of a network
under pressure-deficient conditions using demand-driven simulation software.
This paper illustrates a simple way of assessing the supplying capacity of
demand nodes (DNs) under pressure-deficient conditions by assigning the respective
emitter coefficient only for those nodes facing a pressure-deficit condition.
The proposed method is tested with three benchmark networks, and it is able
to simulate the network without addition of any fictitious network elements
or changing the source code of the software like EPANET. Though the proposed
approach is an iterative one, the computational burden of adding artificial
elements in the other methods is avoided and is hence useful for analyzing large
networks.</p
Baseline data of four insecticides with different modes of action for Anastrepha fraterculus and Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)
La mosca de la fruta del Mediterráneo, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), y la mosca sudamericana de los frutos, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) son plagas de gran importancia económica en Argentina y el mundo. Una de las formas de control es el uso de insecticidas en pulverizaciones totales o en cebos. El uso reiterado de un determinado producto ejerce una fuerte presión de selección, pudiendo ocasionar la aparición de resistencia. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar el dato de nivel básico de cuatro insecticidas con diferentes mecanismos de acción mediante bioensayos en laboratorio. Los productos utilizados fueron formulaciones comerciales de ciantraniliprol, clorpirifos, lambdacialotrina y spinosad. La concentración letal media se estimó mediante un análisis de la curva dosis-respuesta. Para ciantraniliprol y clorpirifós los machos y las hembras de ambas especies fueron igualmente susceptibles. Para lambdacialotrina se detectaron diferencias entre las dos especies; la CL50 de A. fraterculus (0,058 y 0,074 para machos y hembras respectivamente) fue menor que la de C. capitata (0,523 y 0,624 para machos y hembras respectivamente). Para spinosad, los machos de A. fraterculus fueron igualmente susceptibles que los machos y las hembras de C. capitata. Estos resultados generan valores de referencia para Argentina y evidencian la necesidad de completar este tipo de estudios con evaluaciones de poblaciones naturales sobre las cuales se ejerce control químico así como con ensayos en campo y semi-campo. Asimismo muestran la necesidad de completar este tipo de estudios con evaluaciones de los niveles de ingesta en las distintas concentraciones.The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), and the South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) are pests of major economic importance in Argentina and worldwide. One way to control them is the use of insecticide in sprays or baits. The repeated use of a particular product exerts a strong selection pressure and can lead to development of resistance. The aim of this study was to determine baseline data of four insecticides with different mechanisms of action through laboratory bioassays. The products used were commercial formulations of cyantraniliprole, chlorpyrifos, lambdacyalothrin and spinosad. The mean lethal concentration was estimated by a dose-response curve analysis. Cyantraniliprole and chlorpyrifos were equally susceptible for males and females of both species. For lambdacyalothrin differences between the two species were detected; LC50 of A. fraterculus (0.058 and 0.074 for males and females respectively) was lower than that of C. capitata (0.523 and 0.624 for males and females respectively). For spinosad, A. fraterculus males were equally susceptible than males and females of C. capitata. These results generate reference values for Argentina and demonstrate the need to complete these studies with field evaluations of natural populations on which chemical control is exercised as well as with field and semi-field trials. Toward Improved Outcomes for Patients With Lung Cancer Globally: The Essential Role of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
PURPOSE
Key to achieving better population-based outcomes for patients with lung cancer is the improvement of medical imaging and nuclear medicine infrastructure globally. This paper aims to outline why and spark relevant health systems strengthening.
METHODS
The paper synthesizes the global lung cancer landscape, imaging referral guidelines (including resource-stratified ones), the reliance of TNM staging upon imaging, relevant multinational health technology assessments, and precisely how treatment selection and in turn patient outcomes hinge upon imaging findings. The final discussion presents data on current global gaps in both diagnostics (including imaging) and therapies and how, informed by such data, improved population-based outcomes are tangible through strategic planning.
RESULTS
Imaging findings are central to appropriate lung cancer patient management and can variably lead to life-prolonging interventions and/or to life-enhancing palliative measures. Early-stage lung cancer can be treated with curative intent but, unfortunately, most patients with lung cancer still present at advanced stages and many patients lack access to both diagnostics and therapies. Furthermore, half of lung cancer cases occur in low- and middle-income countries. The role of medical imaging and nuclear medicine in lung cancer management, as outlined herein, may help inform strategic planning.
CONCLUSION
Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer worldwide. The essential role that medical imaging and nuclear medicine play in early diagnosis and disease staging cannot be overstated, pivotal in selecting the many patients for whom measurably improved outcomes are attainable. Prevention synergized with patient-centered, compassionate, high-quality lung cancer management provision mandate that strategic population-based planning, including universal health coverage strategies, should extend well beyond the scope of disease prevention to include both curative and noncurative treatment options for the millions afflicted with lung cancer

By building a system dynamics simulation platform from a demo-graphic model, this document analyzes the behavior of the population over time, as well as the population of the social security system. Simulation results show that there will be different types of problems in the future and will allow the Government to anticipate them. Interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions - a study using mobile phone data
In this study we analyze one year of anonymized telecommunications data for
over one million customers from a large European cellphone operator, and we
investigate the relationship between people's calls and their physical
location. We discover that more than 90% of users who have called each other
have also shared the same space (cell tower), even if they live far apart.
Moreover, we find that close to 70% of users who call each other frequently (at
least once per month on average) have shared the same space at the same time -
an instance that we call co-location. Co-locations appear indicative of
coordination calls, which occur just before face-to-face meetings. Their number
is highly predictable based on the amount of calls between two users and the
distance between their home locations - suggesting a new way to quantify the
interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions
He Structure and Mechanisms of He Backward Elastic Scattering
The mechanism of He backward elastic scattering is studied.
It is found that the triangle diagrams with the subprocesses He,
He and He, where and
denote the singlet deuteron and diproton pair in the state,
respectively, dominate in the cross section at 0.3-0.8 GeV, and their
contribution is comparable with that for a sequential transfer of a pair
at 1-1.5 GeV.
The contribution of the , estimated on the basis of the spectator
mechanism of the He reaction, increases the HeHe cross section by one order of magnitude as compared to the
contribution of the deuteron alone.
