Theory and practice of the region: a contextual analysis of the transformation of Finnish regiions

Teoria i pràctica de la regió: una anàlisi contextual de la transformació de les regions fineses. Regions i identitats regionals són avui dia qüestions rellevants en la investigació acadèmica, la planificació regional, les iniciatives de desenvolupament i estratègies promocionals promogudes per agents regionals, nacionals i supranacionals. Això és conseqüència alhora de la neoliberalització de l'economia global i d'una reacció regionalista. Aquest article pretén qüestionar les actuals interpretacions de regió i identitat regional. A més, en base a exemples referits a Finlàndia, s'analitza la producció social i transformació de la regionalitat i la creació de significació espacial o la corresponent construcció identitària. El treball pretén estudiar com els discursos sobre la identitat regional tenen una gènesi històrica, i com actualment són aprofitats en diversos contextos institucionals, particularment en la planificació regional. També es planteja que preteses identitats regionals es relacionen amb la mobilitat de la ciutadania i com aquesta mobilitat obliga a reconceptualitzar les categories espacials.Teoría y práctica de la región: un análisis contextual de la transformación de las regiones finlandesas. Regiones e identidades regionales son hoy día cuestiones relevantes en la investigación académica, la planificación regional, las iniciativas de desarrollo y estrategias promocionales promovidas por agentes regionales, nacionales y supranacionales. Ello es consecuencia tanto de la neoliberalización de la economía global como de una reacción regionalista. Este artículo pretende cuestionar las actuales interpretaciones de región e identidad regional. Además, en base a ejemplos referidos a Finlandia, se analiza la producción social y transformación de la regionalidad y la creación de significación espacial o su correspondiente construcción identitaria. El trabajo pretende estudiar cómo los discursos sobre la identidad regional tienen una génesis histórica, y cómo actualmente son aprovechados en diversos contextos institucionales, particularmente en la planificación regional. También se plantea que pretendidas identidades regionales se relacionan con la movilidad de la ciudadanía y cómo esa movilidad obliga a reconceptualizar las categorías espaciales.Regions and regional identities are today important in academic research, regional planning schemes, development ideologies and marketing strategies pursued by regional, national and supranational actors. This is a consequence of both the neoliberalization of the global economy and a regionalist response. This article will problematize the current interpretations of region and regional identity. Further, based on a range of illustrations from Finland, this study will analyse the social production and transformation of regionality and spatial meaning making or identity building in this context. The article will study how discourses on regional identity have been historically produced, and how they are currently being exploited in various institutional contexts, especially regional planning. The paper also discusses how purported regional identities are related to the mobility of citizens and how this mobility challenges and claims to re-conceptualize spatial categories

Boundaries as Barriers and Promoters: Constructing the Tourist Landscapes of Finnish Karelia

Boundaries have become significant foci of interdisciplinary research during the last decade, but their roles have not been discussed very often in the context of tourism which, in fact, is crucially linked with many contemporary tendencies such as the opening of borders between formerly closed realms of the world or flows of capital and people. This paper analyses the historical and geographical roles of the FinnishRussian border in relation to tourism. The border was strictly guarded and almost entirely closed in Soviet times. It was a taboo that interested many foreign visitors to Finland. It interested the Finns as well, because on the other side was the ceded area of Karelia that had been part of Finland before the war but which was now totally inaccessible to foreign visitors or former residents. It was also the transformation zone of imagined cultural landscapes. When the physical border shifted westward after the war, so did the Karelian cultural landscape and its representations. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the border has become much more open and tourism has increased enormously

Granice analizowane są przede wszystkim w skali międzynarodowej, ponieważ to granice między państwami dostarczają prawdopodobnie jednej z najbardziej wyraźnych manifestacji makrostrukturalnego związku polityki i geografii. W minionej dekadzie jesteśmy świadkami ponownego zainteresowania granicami, zarówno z perspektywy geograficznej, jak i na szerszym polu teorii społecznej. Geografowie dążą do umieszczenia kategorii granicy i terytoriów w ramy pojęciowe teorii społecznej, natomiast na gruncie nauk społecznych podjęto próbę analizy roli przestrzeni oraz, w niektórych przypadkach, terytorium w rozumieniu personalnych, grupowych oraz narodowych granic i tożsamości. Najnowsze badania w tym zakresie dotyczą ponowoczesnych koncepcji terytorialności i „zanikania” granic, konstruowania socjoprzestrzennych tożsamości oraz narracji socjalizacyjnych, w których granica jest fundamentem podziału „my” – „Oni”, a także różnych skal przestrzennych, w jakich można analizować granice. Critical practice of grant application and administration: an intervention

Introduction: Researchers experience increasing pressures to connect with bodies that finance their projects. In this climate, critical scholars face many obstacles as they seek to navigate the treacherous waters of securing external funds. To debate these challenges, the ACME Editorial Collective organized a panel for the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Las Vegas. This intervention represents a follow-up discussion and collective writing process among some of the panelists and members of the audience who attended the panel. Below, we examine the neoliberalization of the current funding systems, discuss the implications for research practice, and make suggestions for critical engagement and transformation. Our suggestions, however, will not be easy to implement, as we can infer from the experience of the radical scholars of the post-1968 generation whose ascension into the upper echelons of North American and European university systems was also associated with the neoliberalization of the funding systems. This intervention represents a modest contribution in the tradition of critical research practice of creating the possibilities for progressive change

Vernacular museum: communal bonding and ritual memory transfer among displaced communities

Eclectically curated and largely ignored by the mainstream museum sector, vernacular museums sit at the interstices between the nostalgic and the future-oriented, the private and the public, the personal and the communal. Eluding the danger of becoming trivialised or commercialised, they serve as powerful conduits of memory, which strengthen communal bonds in the face of the ‘flattening’ effects of globalisation. The museum this paper deals with, a vernacular museum in Vanjärvi in southern Finland, differs from the dominant type of the house museum, which celebrates masculinity and social elites. Rather, it aligns itself with the small amateur museums of everyday life called by Angela Jannelli Wild Museums (2012), by analogy with Lévi-Strauss’ concept of ‘pensée sauvage’. The paper argues that, despite the present-day flurry of technologies of remembering and lavishly funded memory institutions, there is no doubt that the seemingly ‘ephemeral’ institutions such as the vernacular museum, dependent so much on performance, oral storytelling, living bodies and intimate interaction, nevertheless play an important role in maintaining and invigorating memory communities
