    QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories : challenges and perspectives

    We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.Peer reviewe

    Growth kinetics related to physiological parameters in young Saccorhiza dermatodea and Alaria esculenta sporophytes exposed to UV radiation

    Young sporophytes of Saccorhiza dermatodea and Alaria esculenta cultured from Spitsbergen isolates were exposed in the laboratory to either only photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or to a spectrum including UV-radiation (PAR+UVA+UVB) by use of cutoff glass filters. The plants were grown at 8±2°C and 16:8 h light-dark cycles with 6 h additional UV exposure in the middle of the light period. Growth was measured every 10 min using growth chambers with online video measuring technique for 18-21 days. Tissue morphology and absorption spectra were measured in untreated young sporophytes while tissue chlorophyll-a content and DNA damage were measured from treated thalli at the end of the experiment. Under UVR, growth rates of S. dermatodea were significantly reduced while A. esculenta have a potential to acclimate. Tissue chlorophyll-a contents in both species were not significantly different between treatments suggesting that these algae may acclimate to moderate UVR fluence. Higher DNA damage in S. dermatodea effectively diverted photosynthetic products for repair constraining growth. Tissue optics (opacity and translucence) was correlated to the tissue absorbance in the UVR region characteristics of phlorotannin, an important UV-absorbing compound in brown macroalgae. Growth rates of sporophytes of both species exposed to PAR without UV was similar during day and night. The results showed that both species can recruit and inhabit a similar coastal zone when appropriate strategies are expressed to minimize damage in response to the stress factor. © Springer-Verlag 2005

    Characteristics of Yersinia enterocolitica biotype 1A strains isolated from patients and asymptomatic carriers

    Yersinia enterocolitica biotype 1A strains are frequently isolated from the environment, foods, and animals, and also from humans with yersiniosis. There are controversial reports on the pathogenicity of biotype 1A strains. In this study, 811 fecal samples from asymptomatic humans from Switzerland were studied for the presence of Y. enterocolitica. Nine (1.1%) of the 811 samples were positive for Y. enterocolitica 1A. These strains were compared with 12 Y. enterocolitica 1A strains from Swiss patients with diarrhea isolated in the same year. Almost all (20/21) Y. enterocolitica 1A strains carried the ystB gene, seven strains carried the hreP gene, and none carried the ail, ystA, myfA, yadA, or virF genes. Most (17/21) Y. enterocolitica 1A strains belonged to two major clusters, A and B, by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Strains of cluster B were only isolated from humans with diarrhea; however, ystB and hreP genes were detected in strains from both clinical and non-clinical samples and from strains of clusters A and B. Using ribotyping, six restriction patterns among biotype 1A strains were obtained with HindIII enzyme. The most common ribotype (RT I) was found in strains isolated from humans with and without diarrhea. All biotype 1A strains had a unique NotI profile by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), showing a very high genetic diversity. In this study, Y. enterocolitica 1A strains from clinical and non-clinical samples could not be clearly differentiated from each other. More research is needed in order to prove that biotype 1A strains are a primary cause for human yersiniosis and not only a secondary finding

    The Semantics of Entrepreneurial Learning in New Technology-Based Firms

    New Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs) learn their business in the early-stages of their life-cycle. As a central element of the entrepreneurial learning process, the business model describes the value-creation functions that are conceptualized in different stages of the NTBF’s life-cycle. Transaction relations connect the model with the business reality and ideally mature in strength over time to a functioning value-network. This chapter describes the development of a research design that determines, extracts, and evaluates semantics constructs of this entrepreneurial learning out of a convenient sample and three cohorts of business plans submitted to a business plan award between 2008 and 2010. The analysis shows empirical evidence for the survival and growth of those NTBFs that exhibit a balanced status of entrepreneurial learning in the maturity of the value-network that can be characterized as early startup-stage. The empirical findings of the network theory based business plan analysis will allow for a better explanation of the performance in the entrepreneurial process that is discussed for NTBFs based on theory of organizational learning
