The Abundances Of Neutron-Capture Species In The Very Metal-Poor Globular Cluster M15: A Uniform Analysis Of Red Giant Branch And Red Horizontal Branch Stars
The globular cluster M15 is unique in its display of star-to-star variations in the neutron-capture elements. Comprehensive abundance surveys have been previously conducted for handfuls of M15 red giant branch (RGB) and red horizontal branch (RHB) stars. No attempt has been made to perform a single, self-consistent analysis of these stars, which exhibit a wide range in atmospheric parameters. In the current effort, a new comparative abundance derivation is presented for three RGB and six RHB members of the cluster. The analysis employs an updated version of the line transfer code MOOG, which now appropriately treats coherent, isotropic scattering. The apparent discrepancy in the previously reported values for the metallicity of M15 RGB and RHB stars is addressed and a resolute disparity of Delta(RHB-RGB) approximate to 0.1 dex in the iron abundance was found. The anti-correlative behavior of the light neutron-capture elements (Sr, Y, Zr) is clearly demonstrated with both Ba and Eu, standard markers of the s- and r-process, respectively. No conclusive detection of Pb was made in the RGB targets. Consequently for the M15 cluster, this suggests that the main component of the s-process has made a negligible contribution to those elements normally dominated by this process in solar system material. Additionally for the M15 sample, a large Eu abundance spread is confirmed, which is comparable to that of the halo field at the same metallicity. The nucleus as a fluid of skyrmions: Energy levels and nucleon properties in the medium
A model of a fluid of skyrmions coupled to a scalar and to the \o meson
mean fields is developed. The central and spin-orbit potentials of a skyrmion
generated by the fields predict correct energy levels in selected closed shell
nuclei. The effect of the meson fields on the properties of skyrmions in nuclei

Strain dependence of bonding and hybridization across the metal-insulator transition of VO2
Soft x-ray spectroscopy is used to investigate the strain dependence of the
metal-insulator transition of VO2. Changes in the strength of the V 3d - O 2p
hybridization are observed across the transition, and are linked to the
structural distortion. Furthermore, although the V-V dimerization is
well-described by dynamical mean-field theory, the V-O hybridization is found
to have an unexpectedly strong dependence on strain that is not predicted by
band theory, emphasizing the relevance of the O ion to the physics of VO2
Can health trainers make a difference with difficult-to-engage clients? A multisite case study
A political attempt in the United Kingdom to address health inequalities in the past decade has been the governmentâs initiative to employ local health trainers (HTs) or health trainer champions (HTCs) to support disadvantaged individuals with aspects of their health-related behaviors. HT/HTCs provide health-related information and support to individuals with healthy eating, physical activity, and smoking cessation. They undertake community engagement and direct individuals to relevant health services. They differ in that HTs are trained to provide health interventions to individuals or groups and to make referrals to specialist health care services when necessary. This article provides an evaluation of HT/HTCs interventions across three sites, including one prison, one probation service (three teams), and one mental health center. An evaluation framework combining process and outcome measures was employed that used mixed methods to capture data relating to the implementation of the service, including the context of the HT/HTCs interventions, the reactions of their clients, and the outcomes reported. It was found that HT/HTCs interventions were more effective in the prison and mental health center compared with the probation site largely as a result of contextual factors
The Obliteration of Truth by Management: Badiou, St. Paul and the Question of Economic Managerialism in Education
This paper considers the questions that Badiouâs theory of the subject poses to cultures of economic managerialism within education. His argument that radical change is possible, for people and the situations they inhabit, provides a stark challenge to the stifling nature of much current educational climate. In 'Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism', Badiou describes the current universalism of capitalism, monetary homogeneity and the rule of the count. Badiou argues that the politics of identity are all too easily subsumed by the prerogatives of the marketplace and unable to present, therefore, a critique of the status quo. These processes are, he argues, without the potential for truth. What are the implications of Badiouâs claim that education is the arranging of âthe forms of knowledge in such a way that truth may come to pierce a hole in themâ (Badiou, 2005, p. 9)? In this paper, I argue that Badiouâs theory opens up space for a kind of thinking about education that resists its colonisation by cultures of management and marketisation and leads educationalists to consider the emancipatory potential of education in a new light
Ferromagnetic redshift of the optical gap in GdN
We report measurements of the optical gap in a GdN film at temperatures from
300 to 6K, covering both the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The gap is
1.31eV in the paramagnetic phase and red-shifts to 0.9eV in the spin-split
bands below the Curie temperature. The paramagnetic gap is larger than was
suggested by very early experiments, and has permitted us to refine a
(LSDA+U)-computed band structure. The band structure was computed in the full
translation symmetry of the ferromagnetic ground state, assigning the
paramagnetic-state gap as the average of the majority- and minority-spin gaps
in the ferromagnetic state. That procedure has been further tested by a band
structure in a 32-atom supercell with randomly-oriented spins. After fitting
only the paramagnetic gap the refined band structure then reproduces our
measured gaps in both phases by direct transitions at the X point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
New sources of resistance to Myrothecium roridum and Podosphaeria xanthii in yellow melon.
The aim of this study was to identify sources of resistance to Myrothecium roridum and Podosphaeria xanthii. Initially, 86 inbred lines of the crossing AM-04 x Goldex, 91 inbred lines of the crossing AM-12 x Rochedo, and 75 inbred lines of the crossing ACP x AF-646 were evaluated. The trials were carried out in a greenhouse in a randomized block design with five replications. Seventeen inbred lines were identified as resistant to M. roridum. These inbred lines, as well as the parents and seven differential cultivars (checks) were evaluated for the reaction to P. xanthii. Ten inbred lines were selected as moderately resistant to M. roridumand resistant to P. xanthii
SPHR Diabetes Prevention Model: Detailed Description of Model Background, Methods, Assumptions and Parameters
Type-2 diabetes is a complex disease with multiple risk factors and health consequences whose prevention is a major public health priority. We have developed a microsimulation model written in the R programming language that can evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a comprehensive range of different diabetes prevention interventions, either in the general population or in subgroups at high risk of diabetes. Within the model individual patients with different risk factors for diabetes follow metabolic trajectories (for body mass index, cholesterol, systolic blood pressure and glycaemia), develop diabetes, complications of diabetes and related disorders including cardiovascular disease and cancer, and eventually die. Lifetime costs and quality-adjusted life-years are collected for each patient. The model allows assessment of the wider social impact on employment and the equity impact of different interventions. Interventions may be population-based, community-based or individually targeted, and administered singly or layered together. The model is fully enabled for probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA) to provide an estimate of decision uncertainty. Conditional Intensity and Gibbsianness of Determinantal Point Processes
The Papangelou intensities of determinantal (or fermion) point processes are
investigated. These exhibit a monotonicity property expressing the repulsive
nature of the interaction, and satisfy a bound implying stochastic domination
by a Poisson point process. We also show that determinantal point processes
satisfy the so-called condition which is a general form of
Gibbsianness. Under a continuity assumption, the Gibbsian conditional
probabilities can be identified explicitly.Comment: revised and extende

This chapter contains my impressions and perspectives about the current state
of knowledge about field blue stragglers (FBS) stars, drawn from an extensive
literature that I searched. I conclude my review of issues that attend FBS and
mass transfer, by a brief enumeration of a few mildly disquieting observational
