O artigo examina a prática da alforria entre os homens pardos de Vila Rica (1755-1831). Seu objetivo é apreender os motivos que levaram pardos, donos de pequenas escravarias, a libertar escravos em disposições testamentárias. Buscando a dinâmica da alforria na relação senhor-escravo, conciliamos uma análise das formas de alforriar e do grupo de alforriados com um exame da condição senhorial.The article examines the practice of the manumission among the pardos of Vila Rica (1755-1831). The objective is to apprehend what took them, few slaves’ owners, to practice the manumission in their testamentary dispositions. Catarina Juliana e sua sociedade de culto: rituais e práticas religiosas na Angola setecentista

Este artigo descreve e interpreta as práticas religiosas realizadas pela sacerdotisa angolana Catarina Juliana (e sua sociedade de culto) em uma região interiorana do reino de Angola durante o século XVIII. Os rituais e símbolos descritos no processo inquisitorial contra Catarina Juliana são interpretados a partir de uma análise hermenêutica e comparativa, e o aparato conceitual do estudo é fornecido pela antropologia simbólica. O caso analisado revela que angolanos, mesmo quando batizados na religião dos colonizadores, resistiam em suas práticas religiosas tradicionais. Procura-se, aqui, demonstrar que diferentes rituais, antes conduzidos por sacerdotes especializados, passaram a ser acumulados pelos banganga de uma mesma sociedade de culto na Angola setecentista.Catarina Juliana and her cult group: rituals and religious practices in eightheenth Century AngolaThis article describes and interprets the religious practices performed by the Angolan priestess Catarina Juliana (and her cult group) in an inland region of the Kingdom of Angola during the 18th century. The rituals and symbols described in the inquisitorial process against Catarina Juliana are interpreted based on a hermeneutic and comparative analysis, using an approach coming from symbolic anthropology. The case analyzed shows that Angolans, even when baptized in the religion of the colonizers, continued their traditional religious practices. OS DIGGERS DE SAN FRANCISCO NOS SIXTIES: APROPRIAÇÕES DE UM MOVIMENTO INGLÊS SEISCENTISTA

Desde o século XIX, comunistas – socialistas ou anarquistas – reivindicam a paternidade das ideias e práticas políticas dos diggers ingleses de 1649-1652. Este artigo analisa a apropriação do pensamento de Gerrard Winstanley (1609-1676), geralmente apresentado como a principal liderança do movimento digger, por um grupo de atores e ativistas anarquistas da cidade de San Francisco (EUA), durante a contracultura e a emergência da Nova Esquerda na década de 1960. Procura-se demonstrar que, a exemplo dos acadêmicos marxistas, o movimento anarquista de San Francisco empreendeu uma leitura materialista do pensamento de Winstanley. Se, por um lado, os diggers de San Francisco, assim como os originais, defenderam a abolição da propriedade privada e a socialização dos recursos básicos de sobrevivência (comida, roupas, cuidados médicos e abrigo), por outro, as concepções anarquistas dos californianos se distanciaram da plataforma para uma república livre, escrita por Winstanley em 1652 e dedicada à Oliver Cromwell

Thresholding methods in non-intrusive load monitoring

Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is the problem of predicting the status or consumption of individual domestic appliances only from the knowledge of the aggregated power load. NILM is often formulated as a classifcation (ON/OFF) problem for each device. However, the training datasets gathered by smart meters do not contain these labels, but only the electric consumption at every time interval. This paper addresses a fundamental methodological problem in how a NILM problem is posed, namely how the diferent possible thresholding methods lead to diferent classifcation problems. Standard datasets and NILM deep learning models are used to illustrate how the choice of thresholding method afects the output results. Some criteria that should be considered for the choice of such methods are also proposed. Finally, we propose a slight modifcation to current deep learning models for multi-tasking, i.e. tackling the classifcation and regression problems simultaneously. Procura-se demonstrar que as imagens "de época" ou produzidas a posteriori, se não forem empregadas apenas de modo ilustrativo, constituem valiosos recursos didáticos à disposição do professor de História

Ancestralidade africana e espiritismo na Umbanda

Este texto é o resultado de um diálogo entre um historiador e uma mãe de santo. A ancestralidade e a espiritualidade na Umbanda foram pautadas pelo historiador com base na religião tradicional dos povos bantu, da África Centro-Ocidental, mas a mãe de santo discorreu sobre esses assuntos a partir da sua vivência religiosa e do seu conhecimento da doutrina umbandista. Como o leitor depreenderá, os argumentos da mãe de santo são tributários do intercâmbio entre concepções africanas e kardecistas, as quais estiveram na origem do processo de codificação da Umbanda como uma nova religião no início do século passado. This text is the result of a dialogue between a historian and a mother of saint. The ancestry and spirituality in Umbanda were guided by the historian based on the traditional religion of the Bantu peoples of Central-West Africa, but the mother of saint discussed these matters based on her religious experience and her knowledge of Umbanda doctrine. As the reader will understand, the arguments of the mother of saint are tributaries of the exchange between African and Kardecist conceptions, which were at the origin of the codification process of Umbanda as a new religion at the beginning of the last century

Hybrid Search method for Zermelo's navigation problem

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm called the Hybrid Search algorithm that integrates the Zermelo's Navigation Initial Value Problem with the Ferraro-Mart\'in de Diego-Almagro algorithm to find the optimal route for a vessel to reach its destination. Our algorithm is designed to work in both Euclidean and spherical spaces and utilizes a heuristic that allows the vessel to move forward while remaining within a predetermined search cone centred around the destination. This approach not only improves efficiency but also includes obstacle avoidance, making it well-suited for real-world applications. We evaluate the performance of the Hybrid Search algorithm on synthetic vector fields and real ocean currents data, demonstrating its effectiveness and performance.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
