Quantum Einstein-Dirac Bianchi Universes
We study the mini--superspace quantization of spatially homogeneous (Bianchi)
cosmological universes sourced by a Dirac spinor field. The quantization of the
homogeneous spinor leads to a finite-dimensional fermionic Hilbert space and
thereby to a multi-component Wheeler-DeWitt equation whose main features are:
(i) the presence of spin-dependent Morse-type potentials, and (ii) the
appearance of a q-number squared-mass term, which is of order , and which is affected by ordering ambiguities. We give the exact
quantum solution of the Bianchi type-II system (which contains both scattering
states and bound states), and discuss the main qualitative features of the
quantum dynamics of the (classically chaotic) Bianchi type-IX system. We
compare the exact quantum dynamics of fermionic cosmological billiards to
previous works that described the spinor field as being either classical or

Decision for reconstructive interventions of the upper limb in individuals with tetraplegia: the effect of treatment characteristics
Objective: To determine the effect of treatment characteristics on the\ud
decision for reconstructive interventions for the upper extremities (UE) in\ud
subjects with tetraplegia. - \ud
Setting: Seven specialized spinal cord injury centres in the Netherlands. - \ud
Method: Treatment characteristics for UE reconstructive interventions were\ud
determined. Conjoint analysis (CA) was used to determine the contribution\ud
and the relative importance of the treatment characteristics on the decision\ud
for therapy. Therefore, a number of different treatment scenarios using these\ud
characteristics were established. Different pairs of scenarios were presented\ud
to subjects who were asked to choose the preferred scenario of each set. - \ud
Results: forty nine subjects with tetraplegia with a stable C5, C6 or C7\ud
lesion were selected. All treatment characteristics significantly influenced\ud
the choice for treatment. Relative importance of treatment characteristics\ud
were: intervention type (surgery or surgery with FES implant) 13%, number\ud
of operations 15%, in patient rehabilitation period 22%, ambulant\ud
rehabilitation period 9%, complication rate 15%, improvement of elbow\ud
function 10%, improvement of hand function 15%. In deciding for therapy\ud
40% of the subjects focused on one characteristic. - \ud
Conclusion: CA is applicable in Spinal Cord Injury medicine to study the\ud
effect of health outcomes and non-health outcomes on the decision for\ud
treatment. Non-health outcomes which relate to the intensity of treatment\ud
are equally important or even more important than functional outcome in the\ud
decision for reconstructive UE surgery in subjects with tetraplegia
Collisional dust avalanches in debris discs
We quantitatively investigate how collisional avalanches may developin debris
discs as the result of the initial break-up of a planetesimal or comet-like
object, triggering a collisional chain reaction due to outward escaping small
dust grains. We use a specifically developed numerical code that follows both
the spatial distribution of the dust grains and the evolution of their
size-frequency distribution due to collisions. We investigate how strongly
avalanche propagation depends on different parameters (e.g., amount of dust
released in the initial break-up, collisional properties of dust grains and
their distribution in the disc). Our simulations show that avalanches evolve on
timescales of ~1000 years, propagating outwards following a spiral-like
pattern, and that their amplitude exponentially depends on the number density
of dust grains in the system. We estimate a probability for witnessing an
avalanche event as a function of disc densities, for a gas-free case around an
A-type star, and find that features created by avalanche propagation can lead
to observable asymmetries for dusty systems with a beta Pictoris-like dust
content or higher. Characteristic observable features include: (i) a brightness
asymmetry of the two sides for a disc viewed edge-on, and (ii) a one-armed open
spiral or a lumpy structure in the case of face-on orientation. A possible
system in which avalanche-induced structures might have been observed is the
edge-on seen debris disc around HD32297, which displays a strong luminosity

Survey of the needs of patients with spinal cord injury: impact and priority for improvement in hand function in tetraplegics\ud
Objective: To investigate the impact of upper extremity deficit in subjects with tetraplegia.\ud

Setting: The United Kingdom and The Netherlands.\ud
\ud
Study design: Survey among the members of the Dutch and UK Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Associations.\ud
\ud
Main outcome parameter: Indication of expected improvement in quality of life (QOL) on a 5-point scale in relation to improvement in hand function and seven other SCI-related impairments.\ud
\ud
Results: In all, 565 subjects with tetraplegia returned the questionnaire (overall response of 42%). Results in the Dutch and the UK group were comparable. A total of 77% of the tetraplegics expected an important or very important improvement in QOL if their hand function improved. This is comparable to their expectations with regard to improvement in bladder and bowel function. All other items were scored lower.\ud

Conclusion: This is the first study in which the impact of upper extremity impairment has been assessed in a large sample of tetraplegic subjects and compared to other SCI-related impairments that have a major impact on the life of subjects with SCI. The present study indicates a high impact as well as a high priority for improvement in hand function in tetraplegics.\ud

Phase-dependent spectra in a driven two-level atom
We propose a method to observe phase-dependent spectra in resonance
fluorescence, employing a two-level atom driven by a strong coherent field and
a weak, amplitude-fluctuating field. The spectra are similar to those which
occur in a squeezed vacuum, but avoid the problem of achieving squeezing over a
solid angle. The system shows other interesting features, such as

Polymer Fiber Probes Enable Optical Control of Spinal Cord and Muscle Function In Vivo
Restoration of motor and sensory functions in paralyzed patients requires the development of tools for simultaneous recording and stimulation of neural activity in the spinal cord. In addition to its complex neurophysiology, the spinal cord presents technical challenges stemming from its flexible fibrous structure and repeated elastic deformation during normal motion. To address these engineering constraints, we developed highly flexible fiber probes, consisting entirely of polymers, for combined optical stimulation and recording of neural activity. The fabricated fiber probes exhibit low-loss light transmission even under repeated extreme bending deformations. Using our fiber probes, we demonstrate simultaneous recording and optogenetic stimulation of neural activity in the spinal cord of transgenic mice expressing the light sensitive protein channelrhodopsin 2 (ChR2). Deconstructing Weight Management Interventions for Young Adults: Looking Inside the Black Box of the EARLY Consortium Trials.
ObjectiveThe goal of the present study was to deconstruct the 17 treatment arms used in the Early Adult Reduction of weight through LifestYle (EARLY) weight management trials.MethodsIntervention materials were coded to reflect behavioral domains and behavior change techniques (BCTs) within those domains planned for each treatment arm. The analytical hierarchy process was employed to determine an emphasis profile of domains in each intervention.ResultsThe intervention arms used BCTs from all of the 16 domains, with an average of 29.3 BCTs per intervention arm. All 12 of the interventions included BCTs from the six domains of Goals and Planning, Feedback and Monitoring, Social Support, Shaping Knowledge, Natural Consequences, and Comparison of Outcomes; 11 of the 12 interventions shared 15 BCTs in common across those six domains.ConclusionsWeight management interventions are complex. The shared set of BCTs used in the EARLY trials may represent a core intervention that could be studied to determine the required emphases of BCTs and whether additional BCTs add to or detract from efficacy. Deconstructing interventions will aid in reproducibility and understanding of active ingredients
Boson Stars as Gravitational Lenses
We discuss boson stars as possible gravitational lenses and study the lensing
effect by these objects made of scalar particles. The mass and the size of a
boson star may vary from an individual Newtonian object similar to the Sun to
the general relativistic size and mass of a galaxy close to its Schwarzschild
radius. We assume boson stars to be transparent which allows the light to pass
through them though the light is gravitationally deflected. We assume boson
stars of the mass to be on non-cosmological distance from
the observer. We discuss the lens equation for these stars as well as the
details of magnification. We find that there are typically three images of a
star but the deflection angles may vary from arcseconds to even degrees. There
is one tangential critical curve (Einstein ring) and one radial critical curve
for tangential and radial magnification, respectively. Moreover, the deflection
angles for the light passing in the gravitational field of boson stars can be
very large (even of the order of degrees) which reflects the fact they are very
strong relativistic objects. We also propose a suitable formula for the lens
equation for such large deflection angles, and with the reservation that large
deflection angle images are highly demagnified but in the area of the
tangential critical curve, their existence may help in observational detection
of suitable lenses possessing characteristic features of boson stars which

Community and Economic Impact of the Pennsylvania Wilds
The Pennsylvania Wilds is a place-based brand and destination region in north central Pennsylvania covering 13 entirely rural counties. It is entering its third decade since its inception as an official tourism region and conservation landscape. A comprehensive mixed-methods research study conducted in 2022 indicates that this region is an effective place-based tourism brand. Stakeholder groups of visitors, businesses, and residents recognize the PA Wilds brand attributes of environmental stewardship and economic development. Resident and business stakeholders indicated pride in belonging to the region. These overall positive impacts of the brand indicate that brand management in the PA Wilds is well executed. The PA Wilds Center is the de facto brand manager of the region, as established through an intergovernmental cooperative agreement. The study team’s analysis concluded that the PA Wilds Center has multidimensionally satisfied and exceeded 15 established industry best practices for place-based tourism branding and development. Over the 10 years analyzed in this study (2011-2021), the region experienced a population decline. Increased regional economic contributions from the tourism industry paralleled this decline. In short, the population decreased in this period while the positive impacts of tourism increased. With the policy actions delineated in this report, the rural residents of this region can enjoy further positive economic and community dividends from the state\u27s initial investment in this regional strategy
