Models for ancient Maya coastal site development and economy: examination of Pork and Doughboy Point, Port Honduras, Belize

In the summer of 2003 I conducted an archaeological study at Pork and Doughboy Point, Belize, under the direction of Dr. Heather McKillop. The site, situated amidst other ancient Maya coastal settlements of the Port Honduras in southern Belize, has only been tested for offshore deposits in the three decades since it was reported. The current research involved the first reported terrestrial excavations at the site. The goals of this investigation were to recover pottery that could be used to date the ancient Maya occupation and obtain artifacts that would suggest the nature of the site. From artifact analyses I have concluded that Pork and Doughboy Point was the location of one or more intensified activities, the products of which were likely involved in coastal-inland trade with the interior centers of southern Belize. I propose first generation models that test the available data in an attempt to depict the nature of ancient Maya coastal site development and economy. These models may also be appropriate in other regions of the Maya realm

Acting-arrangement Ontology Introduced

In this thesis I begin the task of setting out and arguing for an account of the ontology of the world. The account of ontology I propose, acting-arrangement ontology (AAO), is radically new - it follows from a recognition that two seemingly prosaic and previously underappreciated features of our world are, I shall argue, the twin keystones of its ontology: acting and arrangement. My aim in this preliminary work is to develop and set out the main pieces of this ontology, showing how they fit together to form a compelling whole, so as to make a case that this account of ontology warrants further investigation

The Center Will Hold: Critical Perspectives on Writing Center Scholarship

In The Center Will Hold, Pemberton and Kinkead have compiled a major volume of essays on the signal issues of scholarship that have established the writing center field and that the field must successfully address in the coming decade. The new century opens with new institutional, demographic, and financial challenges, and writing centers, in order to hold and extend their contribution to research, teaching, and service, must continuously engage those challenges. Appropriately, the editors offer the work of Muriel Harris as a key pivot point in the emergence of writing centers as sites of pedagogy and research. The volume develops themes that Harris first brought to the field, and contributors here offer explicit recognition of the role that Harris has played in the development of writing center theory and practice. Emerging Best Practices in International Atmospheric Trust Case Law

With climate change litigation proliferating throughout the world, a substantial body of case law is emerging. As part of a project of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law\u27s Climate Change Specialist Group, this Article, a version of which will be included in a “Judicial Handbook on Climate Litigation,” explains the public trust doctrine’s influence on climate change litigation internationally. We select what we view as judicial “best practices” as a kind of restatement of international atmospheric trust law in 2022. International atmospheric trust law is at the forefront of many best practices, as state and federal courts in the United States have fettered the public trust doctrine’s development by erecting procedural hurdles like standing and political question doctrines. On the other hand, international courts do not suffer from these procedural limitations, allowing them to reach the merits of public trust claims in the context of climate change. This Article explains these developments in an effort to synthesize the rapidly developing case law

Elliptic curves and their applications in cryptography

This present thesis examines the role of elliptic curves on cryptography and basic problems involving implementation and security of some elliptic curve cryptosystems. Some of the aspects we are concerned with include: Methods to determine the number of points on an elliptic curve over a finite field; Implementation of cryptosystems based on the discrete logarithm problem for elliptic curves defined over a finite field; Examine an elliptic curve analogue of the RSA cryptosystem. We provide answers to these and discuss a number of applications for number theory, such as factorization and primality testing
