BACKGROUND: Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines were developed to decrease morbidity and mortality, yet implementation varies across settings. Factors associated with poor adherence are not well understood. METHODS: We used data from Manhica District Hospital outpatient department and five peripheral health centers to examine pneumonia management for children <5 years old from January 2008 to June 2011. Episodes of IMCI-defined pneumonia (cough or difficult breathing plus tachypnea), severe pneumonia (pneumonia plus chest wall in-drawing), and/or clinician-diagnosed pneumonia (based on discharge diagnosis) were included. RESULTS: Among severe pneumonia episodes, 96.2% (2,918/3,032) attended in the outpatient department and 70.0% (291/416) attended in health centers were appropriately referred to the emergency department. Age<1 year, malnutrition and various physical exam findings were associated with referral. For non-severe pneumonia episodes, antibiotics were prescribed in 45.7% (16,094/35,224). Factors associated with antibiotic prescription included age <1 year, abnormal auscultatory findings, and clinical diagnosis of pneumonia; diagnosis of malaria or gastroenteritis and pallor were negatively associated with antibiotic prescription. CONCLUSION: Adherence to recommended management of severe pneumonia was high in a hospital outpatient department, but suboptimal in health centers. Antibiotics were prescribed in fewer than half of non-severe pneumonia episodes, and diagnosis of malaria was the strongest risk factor for incorrect management

Corn (Zea mays L.) is the most cultivated cereal in the world. The high yields obtained for this crop are mainly linked to nitrogen requirements. Technologies that aim to reduce costs with nitrogen fertilizers, with less environmental impact, such as diazotrophic bacteria, should be considered an advantageous alternative for this crop. The present study aimed to evaluate two corn hybrids, BioGene 7046® and Dekalb 310®, with three topdressing nitrogen doses (0.35 and 70 kg ha-1 of N) associated with four application methods of Azospirillum brasilense (without inoculation, seed inoculation, foliar inoculation, and the combination of inoculation via seeds and leaves). A randomized block design with four replications arranged in a 2x3x4 factorial scheme was used to evaluate variables related to growth and development, physiological analysis of nitrate reductase enzyme activity, and yield variables and their components. The use of Azospirillum brasilense did not affect the development of corn plants and did not increase grain yield. In the edaphoclimatic conditions in which this research was developed, nitrogen fertilization at doses of 35 and 70 kg ha-1 benefit nutrition, development, and corn yield components but are insufficient to increase grain yield.O milho (Zea mays L.) é o cereal mais cultivado no mundo.

Signatures of selection for bonamiosis resistance in European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis): New genomic tools for breeding programs and management of natural resources

The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a highly appreciated mollusk with an important aquaculture production throughout the 20th century, in addition to playing an important role on coastal ecosystems. Overexploitation of natural beds, habitat degradation, introduction of non‐native species, and epidemic outbreaks have severely affected this important resource, particularly, the protozoan parasite Bonamia ostreae, which is the main concern affecting its production and conservation. In order to identify genomic regions and markers potentially associated with bonamiosis resistance, six oyster beds distributed throughout the European Atlantic coast were sampled. Three of them have been exposed to this parasite since the early 1980s and showed some degree of innate resistance (long‐term affected group, LTA), while the other three were free of B. ostreae at least until sampling date (naïve group, NV). A total of 14,065 SNPs were analyzed, including 37 markers from candidate genes and 14,028 from a medium‐density SNP array. Gene diversity was similar between LTA and NV groups suggesting no genetic erosion due to long‐term exposure to the parasite, and three population clusters were detected using the whole dataset. Tests for divergent selection between NV and LTA groups detected the presence of a very consistent set of 22 markers, located within a putative single genomic region, which suggests the presence of a major quantitative trait locus associated with B. ostreae resistance. Moreover, 324 outlier loci associated with factors other than bonamiosis were identified allowing fully discrimination of all the oyster beds. A practical tool which included the 84 highest discriminative markers for tracing O. edulis populations was developed and tested with empirical data. Results reported herein could assist the production of stocks with improved resistance to bonamiosis and facilitate the management of oyster beds for recovery production and ecosystem services provided by this species. This work was funded by the OYSTERECOVER project (FP7‐SME‐2008‐2‐243583) from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme, the European Regional Development's funds (FEDER), and Xunta de Galicia local government (GRC2014/010, R2014/046). The development and provision of the medium‐density SNP array for oysters was supported by Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), and National Environment Research Council (NERC) grants (BB/M026140/1, NE/P010695/1), in addition to BBSRC Institute Strategic Program Grants (BBS/E/D/20002172 and BBS/E/D/30002275)S

North–south pathways, emerging variants, and high climate suitability characterize the recent spread of dengue virus serotypes 2 and 3 in the Dominican Republic

Background: Dengue fever remains a significant public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, with its transmission dynamics being influenced by both environmental factors and human mobility. The Dominican Republic, a biodiversity hotspot in the Caribbean, has experienced recurrent dengue outbreaks, yet detailed understanding of the virus's transmission pathways and the impact of climatic factors remains limited. This study aims to elucidate the recent transmission dynamics of the dengue virus (DENV) in the Dominican Republic, utilizing a combination of genomic sequencing and epidemiological data analysis, alongside an examination of historical climate patterns. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive study involving the genomic sequencing of DENV samples collected from patients across different regions of the Dominican Republic over a two-year period. Phylogenetic analyses were performed to identify the circulation of DENV lineages and to trace transmission pathways. Epidemiological data were integrated to analyze trends in dengue incidence and distribution. Additionally, we integrated historical climate data spanning several decades to assess trends in temperature and their potential impact on DENV transmission potential. Results: Our results highlight a previously unknown north–south transmission pathway within the country, with the co-circulation of multiple virus lineages. Additionally, we examine the historical climate data, revealing long-term trends towards higher theoretical potential for dengue transmission due to rising temperatures. Conclusion: This multidisciplinary study reveals intricate patterns of dengue virus transmission in the Dominican Republic, characterized by the co-circulation of multiple DENV lineages and a novel transmission pathway. The observed correlation between rising temperatures and increased dengue transmission potential emphasizes the need for integrated climate-informed strategies in dengue control efforts. Our findings offer critical insights for public health authorities in the Dominican Republic and similar settings, guiding resource allocation and the development of preparedness strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on dengue transmission.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract The current study proposes to investigate the diversity and phylogeny of trypanosomes parasitizing wild birds from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Cytological examination was carried out by light microscopy of blood smears and positive birds were selected for amplification of the 18S rDNA sequence through PCR. The resulting amplicons were subjected to purification, cloning, and sequencing analysis. Phylogenetic reconstruction was conducted, including all avian trypanosomes representative’s lineages. A total of ten bird samples from species of Turdus flavipes (N=1/12), T. albicollis (N=1/8), Tachyphonus coronatus (N=6/121), Thamnophilus caerulescens (N=1/22) and Synallaxis spixi (N=1/8) were positive for Trypanosoma spp. In the six specimens of T. coronatus, five distinct lineages of Trypanosoma spp. 18S-rRNA were observed in ninety sequences obtained, and using the strategy of cloning independent PCR, it was possible to observe that two of them were related to T. avium (JB01/JB02), and three were closed related to T. bennetti (JB03/ JB04/JB05). Addionaly, all fifteen sequences obtained from T. caerulescens/ S. spixi/T. flavipes/T. albicollis were identical. The present research is the first study to access molecular diversity and polyparasitism by avian trypanosomes in Brazil. The current research exhibits the wide genetic variability in avian trypanosomes and its non-specific relationship with its avian hosts

Real Wage Responsiveness to Unemployment in Spain: Asymmetries Along the Business Cycle

    Get PDF
We estimate real wage cyclicality in the period compressed between 1987 and 2013 using a large administrative dataset of workers in Spain. Real wages are weakly procyclical in Spain and focusing on differences in different phases of the business cycle, we find that differences across expansions and recessions are significant, with an even lower real wage cyclicality in recessions. Furthermore, higher levels of unemployment do not translate into additional real wages adjustments when the economy is contracting, while lower levels of unemployment during expansions have incremental effects on wage elasticity. This general result holds after accounting for differences in tenure, type of contract and age categories. Nevertheless, wages of newly-hired workers are the most sensitive to the business cycle and exhibit the lowest asymmetric pattern between expansions and recessions. At the other end, wages of workers with more than six years of tenure can be characterized as the most protected against economic downturns. The same is true for fixed-term vs. permanent workers, as well as for young vs. older workers
