    An Improved Ship Design Tool for Comparing Performance of Multiple Ship Designs across User-Defined Missions

    In the early stages of ship design, engineers from many different disciplines need to have confidence that a design being produced converges across the electrical, mechanical, and thermal domains, and that the design meets the needs of the stakeholders, and, that a particular design performs better or more optimally than other designs produced to accomplish a mission. The tools currently available do not permit the engineering teams to gain this insight in a reasonable amount of time. In this thesis, we discuss the improvements that we have made to our existing ship design tools in the S3D environment, allowing for a more concurrent collaboration between the engineers from all disciplines in the ship design process. Incorporating the notion of time into our existing steady state solvers, we developed a controller class responsible for keeping track of time-related information and scheduling time-based events using the earliest deadline first algorithm. We have also incorporated Python script instructions in the form of an attribute inserted into the equipment models in order to allow Python scripts to represent the effects of system controls. Equipment models were also modified to provide information regarding time dependent metrics, such as fuel and energy, and in order to account for interdependencies between disciplines, they were also given the capacity to inform the mission analyzer tool about whether their dependencies have been satisfied. We developed an algorithm that uses this information to efficiently find a solution such that all dependencies between disciplines are satisfied. Implementing this algorithm, the mission analyzer is able to simulate each of the disciplines for a specified time frame and provide results that indicate whether a ship design is able to complete a mission and the possible costs such as equipment failures, and fuel consumed

    Prevalence and pattern of cognitive impairment in rural and urban populations from Northern Portugal

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite worldwide recognition of the burden of dementia, no epidemiological data is yet available in Portugal. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence and describe the pattern of cognitive impairment with dementia or no dementia (CIND) in rural and urban populations from Northern Portugal.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two random samples of residents aged 55 to 79 years in rural and urban communities were drawn from the health centres registries to be screened for cognitive impairment. The screening criteria for dementia were an abnormal Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score or a Blessed Dementia Scale score. After excluding those who tested positive for dementia, cut-off points for CIND were set at 1 standard deviation below the mean of the MMSE according to educational level. All those who screened positive either for dementia or CIND were examined by a neurologist for establishing a definitive diagnosis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of cognitive impairment was higher in rural than in urban populations, 16.8% (95% CI: 14.3-19.8%) vs. 12.0% (95%CI: 9.3-15.4%), with a rural/urban prevalence ratio (PR) of 2.16 (95% CI: 1.04-4.50) in the eldest and 2.19 (95% CI: 1.01-4.76) in persons with vascular risk factors. The prevalence of dementia was 2.7% (95% CI: 1.9-3.8%) with a rural/urban PR = 2.1 and the prevalence of CIND was 12.3% (95% CI: 10.4-14.4%) and PR = 1.3. The prevalence of dementia increases exponentially with age and in those with cerebrovascular disease or other comorbid conditions while the prevalence of CIND, besides these factors, is also higher in persons with low levels of education or vascular risk factors. Alzheimer's and vascular disease were equally likely aetiologies of dementia (38.7%), the later more common in men PR(F:M = 0.3) as opposed to the former PR(F:M = 2.0). Vascular CIND, associated either with cerebrovascular disease or vascular risk factors was more frequent (39.7%) then depression (18.4%) or any other aetiology.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The prevalence of cognitive impairment is higher in rural compared with urban populations. This is shown in the synergy between age and rurality, with the rural/urban prevalence ratio increasing with age. In this relatively young population from Northern Portugal, cerebrovascular disease as well as vascular risk factors account for 48% of overall cognitive impairment.</p

    Influence of Two Exercise Programs on Heart Rate Variability, Body Temperature, Central Nervous System Fatigue, and Cortical Arousal after a Heart Attack

    Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs’ benefits are overall consensual; however, during exercise, progressive physiological effects have not been studied yet in cardiac patients. Our study aims to analyze physiological parameters of thermography, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure, central nervous system (CNS) fatigue, and cortical arousal in heart attack patients (HAP) who belong to CR programs of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate-intensity Continuous Training (MICT) compared to healthy participants. In this case control study, two HAP patients (both male, age 35 and 48, respectively) and two healthy people (both male, age 38 and 46, respectively) were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1:1 allocation ratio to one of four groups: cardiac MICT, cardiac HIIT, control MICT, and control HIIT. The HIIT at _85–95% of peak heart rate (HR) was followed by a one-minute recovery interval at 40% peakHR, and MICT at _70–75% of peakHR. Outcome measurements included thermography, HRV, blood pressure, CNS fatigue, and cortical arousal; The HAP presents more than twice the CNS fatigue in MICT than control participants, but HIIT has almost the same CNS fatigue in HAP and control. In addition, both of the HAP groups presented higher temperatures in the chest. The HIIT protocol showed better physiological responses during exercise, compared to MICT in HAP

    Nearly 65% of adults diagnosed with cancer will live, at least, five years after the diagnostic. If the treatment is lengthy and disruptive, the persons can experience difficulties in returning to normal daily life. Research shows that cancer survivors suffer from more psychological distress than those who have never experienced cancer (5.6% versus 3.0%), reason why psychoeducational programs are necessary to help people return to everyday life.     Nutritional profile of the Portuguese cabbage (Brassica oleracea L var. costata) and its relationship with the elemental soil analysis

    The economic and financial crisis has increased the number of urban horticulture on lands close to present or past industrial areas. "Tronchuda" or the Portuguese cabbage (Brassica oleraceae L var. costata DC) was studied because of its importance in Portuguese diet. It belongs to a number of economically significant horticultural crops (Brassica species), which are also known to be nutritionally well-balanced vegetables. "Tronchuda" produced in urban horticultures from 4 regions of mainland Portugal was studied for its nutritional profile along with elemental soil analysis of each sampling site. This study revealed significant interactions between essential elements in soil and plant leaves - the edible part of the plant for human nutrition. In general, these organs contained poor concentrations of Fe and Si, while Mn is absent, regardless of the sampling sites. Conversely, Ca levels were abundant with values ranging between 3.3% and 3.9%. Soils from CAP showed a soil nutrient exhaustion of Fe, Mn and Mo, although the highest protein and sucrose contents in the leaves was observed in plants growing in those soils. Protein, lipids and carbohydrates concentrations differed according to sampling site, reflecting different production practices.publishersversionpublishe

    O presente trabalho utilizou ferramentas de sensoriamento remoto e sistema de informação geográfica, aliadas às informações espectrais do solo e quantitativas e qualitativas do relevo, para a caracterização e discriminação das classes de solos desenvolvidos do Grupo Barreiras na região do município de Porto Grande, Amapá. Após o mapeamento semidetalhado de solos, realizou-se a caracterização pontual das amostras dos perfis por meio de espectroscopia de visível e infravermelho (400-2500 nm), e a análise espacial das redes de drenagem e relevo a partir de fotos aéreas e imagens de radar. As informações quantitativas do relevo foram mais eficientes na caracterização e discriminação dos solos estudados do que as qualitativas, enquanto as informações espectrais permitiram caracterizar os solos em nível pontual.     The efficacy of suppressive antibiotic treatment in patients managed non-operatively for periprosthetic joint infection and a draining sinus

    Objectives: Patients with prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) not suitable for curative surgery may benefit from suppressive antibiotic therapy (SAT). However, the usefulness of SAT in cases with a draining sinus has never been investigated. Methods: A multicentre, retrospective observational cohort study was performed in which patients with a PJI and a sinus tract were eligible for inclusion if managed conservatively and if sufficient follow-up data were available (i.e. at least 2 years). SAT was defined as a period of > 6 months of oral antibiotic therapy. Results: SAT was initiated in 63 of 72 (87.5 %) included patients. Implant retention during follow-up was the same in patients receiving SAT vs. no SAT (79.4 % vs. 88.9 %; pCombining double low line0.68). In total, 27 % of patients using SAT experienced side effects. In addition, the occurrence of prosthetic loosening in initially fixed implants, the need for surgical debridement, or the occurrence of bacteremia during follow-up could not be fully prevented with the use of SAT, which still occurred in 42 %, 6.3 %, and 3.2 % of cases, respectively. However, the sinus tract tended to close more often (42 % vs. 13 %; pCombining double low line0.14), and a higher resolution of pain was observed (35 % vs. 14 %; pCombining double low line0.22) in patients receiving SAT. Conclusions: SAT is not able to fully prevent complications in patients with a draining sinus. However, it may be beneficial in a subset of patients, particularly in those with pain or the hindrance of a draining sinus. A future prospective study, including a higher number of patients not receiving SAT, is needed

    O objetivo deste estudo assentou em fazer uma análise comparativa, para o período compreendido entre 2004 e 2013 tendo por base as publicações científicas dos docentes do Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB), depositadas na Biblioteca Digital (repositório). Pretendia-se constatar se as publicações científicas existentes nas bases de dados WOS e Scopus estavam depositadas no repositório. Para isso criou-se um instrumento que permitiu a normalização da tipologia documental.A metodologia utilizada consistiu em retirar os dados existentes no repositório, na WOS e Scopus. Todos esses dados foram utilizados para criar tabelas dinâmicas (Excel). Foram ainda utilizadas as análises descritiva exploratória e inferencial para decidir sobre os resultados. Para o período em análise verificou-se um acréscimo de depósitos no repositório superior a 93%. Na análise temporal, referente aos três ciclos de avaliação (2004-2007, 2008-2010 e 2011-2013) verificou-se que a percentagem da taxa de depósitos ultrapassa os 86% de documentos referenciados na WOS e na Scopus. Contudo, 79% dos documentos ficaram em acesso aberto e 21% em acesso restrito. Os documentos não depositados referenciados na WOS e na Scopus, alcançaram os 14%. Constataram-se evidências estatísticas suficientes para afirmar que existiam incoerências na tipologia documental (dc:type) no repositório
