    Pollutants affect water worldwide and consequently present a risk to both the environment and to human health. Cu is an essential element for many organisms, but becomes toxic at relatively high concentrations. Current laboratory-based methods are not able to monitor water quality continuously, as they require laborious sampling and offline monitoring. A potential method that is capable to addressing this problem, guaranteeing the continuous monitoring of water resources, is the integration of microwave spectroscopy with functionalised electromagnetic (f-EM) sensors. The feasibility of using this combined method for achieving a more specific response toward low concentrations of Cu has been demonstrated

    Functionalised microwave sensors for real-time monitoring of copper and zinc concentration in mining-impacted water

    Microwave spectroscopy has been identified as a novel and inexpensive method for the monitoring of water pollutants. Integrating microwave sensors with developed coatings is a novel strategy to make the sensing system more specific for a target contaminant. This study describes the determination of copper and zinc concentration in water in both lab-prepared and acquired mine-water samples from two abandoned mining areas in Wales, UK. Uncoated sensors immersed in samples spiked with 1.25 mg/L concentrations of copper and zinc, using the standard addition method, were able to quantify the concentration at 0.44 GHz with a strong linear correlation (R2=0.99) for the reflection coefficient magnitude (|S11|). Functionalised microwave sensors with l-cysteine, chitosan and bismuth-zinc-cobalt oxide based coatings have shown improvement in the sensing performance. Specifically, the linear correlation at 0.91-1.00 GHz between |S11| and a polluted sample spiked with Cu showed a higher R2 (=0.98), sensitivity (1.65ΔdB/mg/L) and quality factor (135) compared with uncoated sensors (R2=0.88, sensitivity of 0.82 ΔdB/mg/L and Q-factor 30.7). A Lorentzian-peak fitting function was applied for performing advanced multiple peak analysis and identifying the changes in the resonant frequency peaks which are related to the change in metal ion content. This novel sensor platform offers the possibility of in situ monitoring of toxic metal concentrations in mining-impacted water and multiple peak features, such as area, full-width half maximum, centre, and height of the peaks have the possibility to offer higher specificity for similar toxic metals, as between copper and zinc ions

    Detection of Zn in water using novel functionalised planar microwave sensors

    Metal pollution in aquatic environments has attracted global attention. Current methods are not able to monitor water quality in-situ at low-cost. This paper reports on a novel approach for detecting changes in the concentration of zinc in water using electrical and a microwave sensor method, adopting two planar sensors: one was functionalised with a screen-printed β-Bi2O3 based coating, while the other was uncoated. Results show that both electrical and the microwave sensor responses were dependent on the presence and concentration of Zn in water with R2 = 0.93-0.99. The functionalised sensor with a 60 μm thick β-Bi2O3 based film offers improved performance compared with both uncoated and functionalised sensors with 40 μm thick coating for detecting the changes of Zn concentrations in water for low levels (100 and 500 μg/L). This novel sensing system could be a cost-effective alternative to the current offline methods

    The UK market for energy service contracts in 2014–2015

    This paper provides an overview of the UK market for energy service contracts in 2014 and highlights the growing role of intermediaries. Using information from secondary literature and interviews, it identifies the businesses offering energy service contracts, the sectors and organisations that are purchasing those contracts, the types of contract that are available, the areas of market growth and the reasons for that growth. The paper finds that the UK market is relatively large, highly diverse, concentrated in particular sectors and types of site and overwhelmingly focused upon established technologies with high rates of return. A major driver is the emergence of procurement frameworks for energy service contracts in the public sector. These act as intermediaries between clients and contractors, thereby lowering transaction costs and facilitating learning. The market is struggling to become established in commercial offices, largely as a result of split incentives, and is unlikely to develop further in this sector without different business models, tenancy arrangements and policy initiatives. Overall, the paper concludes that energy service contracts can play an important role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, especially when supported by intermediaries, but their potential is still limited by high transaction costs

    Dealing with the difficult student in emergency medicine

    Dealing with a student who is perceived as difficult to work with or teach is inevitable in any academic physician's career. This paper will outline the basic categories of these difficulties pertinent to Emergency Medicine rotations in order to facilitate appropriate identification of problems. Strategies for evaluation and reporting of the difficult student are presented. Remediation, based on the type of difficulty, is addressed. Timeliness of reporting, evaluation, and feedback are invaluable to allow for appropriate assessment of the outcome of the remediation plan

    On the Integrand-Reduction Method for Two-Loop Scattering Amplitudes

    We propose a first implementation of the integrand-reduction method for two-loop scattering amplitudes. We show that the residues of the amplitudes on multi-particle cuts are polynomials in the irreducible scalar products involving the loop momenta, and that the reduction of the amplitudes in terms of master integrals can be realized through polynomial fitting of the integrand, without any apriori knowledge of the integral basis. We discuss how the polynomial shapes of the residues determine the basis of master integrals appearing in the final result. We present a four-dimensional constructive algorithm that we apply to planar and non-planar contributions to the 4- and 5-point MHV amplitudes in N=4 SYM. The technique hereby discussed extends the well-established analogous method holding for one-loop amplitudes, and can be considered a preliminary study towards the systematic reduction at the integrand-level of two-loop amplitudes in any gauge theory, suitable for their automated semianalytic evaluation.Comment: 26 pages, 11 figure

    Transcriptional Responses of Leptospira interrogans to Host Innate Immunity: Significant Changes in Metabolism, Oxygen Tolerance, and Outer Membrane

    Leptospirosis is an important tropical disease around the world, particularly in humid tropical and subtropical countries. As a major pathogen of this disease, Leptospira interrogans can be shed from the urine of reservoir hosts, survive in soil and water, and infect humans through broken skin or mucous membranes. Recently, host adaptability and immune evasion of L. interrogans to host innate immunity was partially elucidated in infection or animal models. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of L. interrogans in response to host innate immunity is required to learn the nature of early leptospirosis. This study focused on the transcriptome of L. interrogans during host immune cells interaction. Significant changes in energy metabolism, oxygen tolerance and outer membrane protein profile were identified as potential immune evasion strategies by pathogenic Leptospira during the early stage of infection. The major outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of L. interrogans may be regulated by the major OmpR specific transcription factor (LB333). These results provide a foundation for further studying the pathogenesis of leptospirosis, as well as identifying gene regulatory networks in Leptospira spp

    Predictors for patient knowledge and reported behaviour regarding driving under the influence of medicines: a multi-country survey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reports on the state of knowledge about medicines and driving showed an increased concern about the role that the use of medicines might play in car crashes. Much of patient knowledge regarding medicines comes from communications with healthcare professionals. This study, part of the DRUID (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, alcohol and medicines) project, was carried out in four European countries and attempts to define predictors for knowledge of patients who use driving-impairing medicines. The influence of socio-demographic variables on patient knowledge was investigated as well as the influence of socio-demographic factors, knowledge and attitudes on patients' reported behaviour regarding driving under the influence of medicines.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Pharmacists handed out questionnaires to patients who met the inclusion criteria: 1) prevalent user of benzodiazepines, antidepressants or first generation antihistamines for systemic use; 2) age between 18 and 75 years old and 3) actual driver of a motorised vehicle. Factors affecting knowledge and reported behaviour towards driving-impairing medicines were analysed by means of multiple linear regression analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 633 questionnaires (out of 3.607 that were distributed to patients) were analysed. Patient knowledge regarding driving under the influence of medicines is better in younger and higher educated patients. Information provided to or accessed by patients does not influence knowledge. Patients who experienced side effects and who have a negative attitude towards driving under the influence of impairing medicines are more prone to change their driving frequency behaviour than those who use their motorised vehicles on a daily basis or those who use anti-allergic medicines.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Changes in driving behaviour can be predicted by negative attitudes towards driving under the influence of medicines but not by patients' knowledge regarding driving under the influence of medicines. Future research should not only focus on information campaigns for patients but also for healthcare providers as this might contribute to improve communications with patients regarding the risks of driving under the influence of medicines.</p

    Phase II trial of sequential gefitinib after minor response or partial response to chemotherapy in Chinese patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer

    BACKGROUND: Basic research of gefitinib (Iressa, ZD1839) has demonstrated the combination effects of gefitinib and chemotherapy were sequence-dependent. To evaluate the efficacy of sequential administration of gefitinib following a minor response or partial response to two to three cycles of chemotherapy, a phase II clinical trial was done in Chinese patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: Thirty-three consecutive patients with advanced NSCLC that had been pretreated with at least one chemotherapeutic regimen and were responding to chemotherapy following 2 to 3 cycles of treatment, entered the trial from May 2004 to February 2006. Patients received gefitinib at an oral dose of 250 mg once daily for 4 weeks. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were evaluable for response and toxicity. The objective response rate was 24.2% (8 of 33)(95% CI, 11% to 42%). The symptom improvement rate was 54.5% (18 of 33) (95% CI, 41% to 69%). The median duration of response was 7 months (95%CI, 4.0 to 13.2 months). The median time to disease progression (TTP) was 6.5 months (95%CI, 0.7 to 16.6 months). The median overall survival time (OS) was 9.8 months (range, 2.1 to 18.0 months), and the actuarial 1-year survival was 36.4%. Toxicity was relatively mild and included only one patient (3.0%) with grade 4 diarrhea, 1 (3.0%) with grade 3 rash, 1 (3.0%) with grade 3 nausea, and 1 with grade 3 vomiting (3.0%). CONCLUSION: Preliminary results suggest that sequential administration of gefitinib following a response to chemotherapy may be beneficial for Chinese patients with advanced NSCLC. Further randomized clinical trials are needed
