Polynomial kernels for 3-leaf power graph modification problems
A graph G=(V,E) is a 3-leaf power iff there exists a tree T whose leaves are
V and such that (u,v) is an edge iff u and v are at distance at most 3 in T.
The 3-leaf power graph edge modification problems, i.e. edition (also known as
the closest 3-leaf power), completion and edge-deletion, are FTP when
parameterized by the size of the edge set modification. However polynomial
kernel was known for none of these three problems. For each of them, we provide
cubic kernels that can be computed in linear time for each of these problems.
We thereby answer an open problem first mentioned by Dom, Guo, Huffner and

Cardiovascular risk estimation and eligibility for statins in primary prevention comparing different strategies.
Recommendations for statin use for primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) are based on estimation of the 10-year CHD risk. It is unclear which risk algorithm and guidelines should be used in European populations. Using data from a population-based study in Switzerland, we first assessed 10-year CHD risk and eligibility for statins in 5,683 women and men 35 to 75 years of age without cardiovascular disease by comparing recommendations by the European Society of Cardiology without and with extrapolation of risk to age 60 years, the International Atherosclerosis Society, and the US Adult Treatment Panel III. The proportions of participants classified as high-risk for CHD were 12.5% (15.4% with extrapolation), 3.0%, and 5.8%, respectively. Proportions of participants eligible for statins were 9.2% (11.6% with extrapolation), 13.7%, and 16.7%, respectively. Assuming full compliance to each guideline, expected relative decreases in CHD deaths in Switzerland over a 10-year period would be 16.4% (17.5% with extrapolation), 18.7%, and 19.3%, respectively; the corresponding numbers needed to treat to prevent 1 CHD death would be 285 (340 with extrapolation), 380, and 440, respectively. In conclusion, the proportion of subjects classified as high risk for CHD varied over a fivefold range across recommendations. Following the International Atherosclerosis Society and the Adult Treatment Panel III recommendations might prevent more CHD deaths at the cost of higher numbers needed to treat compared with European Society of Cardiology guidelines
Percolation in random environment
We consider bond percolation on the square lattice with perfectly correlated
random probabilities. According to scaling considerations, mapping to a random
walk problem and the results of Monte Carlo simulations the critical behavior
of the system with varying degree of disorder is governed by new, random fixed
points with anisotropic scaling properties. For weaker disorder both the
magnetization and the anisotropy exponents are non-universal, whereas for
strong enough disorder the system scales into an {\it infinite randomness fixed
point} in which the critical exponents are exactly known.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Probe-configuration dependent dephasing in a mesoscopic interferometer
Dephasing in a ballistic four-terminal Aharonov-Bohm geometry due to charge
and voltage fluctuations is investigated. Treating two terminals as voltage
probes, we find a strong dependence of the dephasing rate on the probe
configuration in agreement with a recent experiment by Kobayashi et al. (J.
Phys. Soc. Jpn. 71, 2094 (2002)). Voltage fluctuations in the measurement
circuit are shown to be the source of the configuration dependence.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Zero-point vacancies in quantum solids
A Jastrow wave function (JWF) and a shadow wave function (SWF) describe a
quantum solid with Bose--Einstein condensate; i.e. a supersolid. It is known
that both JWF and SWF describe a quantum solid with also a finite equilibrium
concentration of vacancies x_v. We outline a route for estimating x_v by
exploiting the existing formal equivalence between the absolute square of the
ground state wave function and the Boltzmann weight of a classical solid. We
compute x_v for the quantum solids described by JWF and SWF employing very
accurate numerical techniques. For JWF we find a very small value for the zero
point vacancy concentration, x_v=(1.4\pm0.1) x 10^-6. For SWF, which presently
gives the best variational description of solid 4He, we find the significantly
larger value x_v=(1.4\pm0.1) x 10^-3 at a density close to melting. We also
study two and three vacancies. We find that there is a strong short range

Active Amplification of the Terrestrial Albedo to Mitigate Climate Change: An Exploratory Study
This study explores the potential to enhance the reflectance of solar
insolation by the human settlement and grassland components of the Earth's
terrestrial surface as a climate change mitigation measure. Preliminary
estimates derived using a static radiative transfer model indicate that such
efforts could amplify the planetary albedo enough to offset the current global
annual average level of radiative forcing caused by anthropogenic greenhouse
gases by as much as 30 percent or 0.76 W/m2. Terrestrial albedo amplification
may thus extend, by about 25 years, the time available to advance the
development and use of low-emission energy conversion technologies which
ultimately remain essential to mitigate long-term climate change. However,
additional study is needed to confirm the estimates reported here and to assess
the economic and environmental impacts of active land-surface albedo

Discovery of biomarkers for glycaemic deterioration before and after the onset of type 2 diabetes: rationale and design of the epidemiological studies within the IMI DIRECT Consortium
Aims/hypothesis The DIRECT (Diabetes Research on Patient Stratification) Study is part of a European Union Framework 7 Innovative Medicines Initiative project, a joint undertaking between four industry and 21 academic partners throughout Europe. The Consortium aims to discover and validate biomarkers that: (1) predict the rate of glycaemic deterioration before and after type 2 diabetes onset; (2) predict the response to diabetes therapies; and (3) help stratify type 2 diabetes into clearly definable disease subclasses that can be treated more effectively than without stratification. This paper describes two new prospective cohort studies conducted as part of DIRECT. Methods Prediabetic participants (target sample size 2,200-2,700) and patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (target sample size similar to 1,000) are undergoing detailed metabolic phenotyping at baseline and 18 months and 36 months later. Abdominal, pancreatic and liver fat is assessed using MRI. Insulin secretion and action are assessed using frequently sampled OGTTs in non-diabetic participants, and frequently sampled mixed-meal tolerance tests in patients with type 2 diabetes. Biosamples include venous blood, faeces, urine and nail clippings, which, among other biochemical analyses, will be characterised at genetic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic and metagenomic levels. Lifestyle is assessed using high-resolution triaxial accelerometry, 24 h diet record, and food habit questionnaires. Conclusinos/interpretation DIRECT will yield an unprecedented array of biomaterials and data. This resource, available through managed access to scientists within and outside the Consortium, will facilitate the development of new treatments and therapeutic strategies for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes
Absolute Proper Motions to B~22.5: IV. Faint, Low Velocity White Dwarfs and the White Dwarf Population Density Law
The reduced proper motion diagram (RPMD) for a complete sample of faint stars
with high accuracy proper motions in the North Galactic Pole field SA57 is
investigated. Eight stars with very large reduced proper motions are identified
as faint white dwarf candidates. We discriminate these white dwarf candidates
from the several times more numerous QSOs based on proper motion and
variability.
We discuss the implausibility that these stars could be any kind of survey
contaminant. If {\it bona fide} white dwarfs, the eight candidates found here
represent a portion of the white dwarf population hitherto uninvestigated by
previous surveys by virtue of the faint magnitudes and low proper motions. The
newly discovered stars suggest a disk white dwarf scaleheight larger than the
values of 250-350 pc typically assumed in assessments of the local white dwarf
density. Both a <V/V_{max}> and a more complex maximum likelihood analysis of
the spatial distribution of our likely thin disk white dwarfs yield
scaleheights of 400-600 pc while at the same time give a reasonable match to
the local white dwarf volume density found in other surveys.
Our results could have interesting implications for white dwarfs as potential
MACHO objects. We can place some direct constraints (albeit weak ones) on the
contribution of halo white dwarfs to the dark matter of the Galaxy. Moreover,
the elevated scale height that we measure for the thin disk could alter the
interpretation of microlensing results to the extent of making white dwarfs

A without-prejudice list of generic names of fungi for protection under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants
As a first step towards the production of a List of Protected Generic Names for Fungi, a without-prejudice list is presented here as a basis for future discussion and the production of a List for formal adoption. We include 6995 generic names out of the 17072 validly published names proposed for fungi and invite comments from all interested mycologists by 31 March 2014. The selection of names for inclusion takes note of recent major publications on different groups of fungi, and further the decisions reached so far by international working groups concerned with particular families or genera. Changes will be sought in the Code to provide for this and lists at other ranks to be protected against any competing unlisted names, and to permit the inclusion of names of lichen-forming fungi. A revised draft will be made available for further discussion at the 10th International Mycological Congress in Bangkok in August 2014. A schedule is suggested for the steps needed to produce a list for adoption by the International Botanical Congress in August 2017. This initiative provides mycologists with an opportunity to place nomenclature at the generic level on a more secure and stable base
