Black hole entropy, flat directions and higher derivatives
Higher order derivative corrections to the Einstein--Maxwell action are
considered and an explicit form is found for the corrections to the entropy of
extremal black holes. We speculate on the properties of these corrections from
the point of view of small black holes and in the case when the classical black
hole potential exhibits flat directions. A particular attention is paid to the
issue of stability of several solutions, including large and small black holes
by using properties of the Hessian matrix of the effective black hole
potential. This is done by using a model independent expression for such matrix

Experimental infection of chickens by a flagellated motile strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum (SG) causes fowl typhoid (FT), a septicaemic disease which can result in high mortality in poultry flocks. The absence of flagella in SG is thought to favour systemic invasion, since bacterial recognition via Toll-like receptor (TLR)-5 does not take place during the early stages of FT. In the present study, chicks susceptible to FT were inoculated with a wild type SG (SG) or its flagellated motile derivative (SG Fla+). In experiment 1, mortality and clinical signs were assessed, whereas in experiment 2, gross pathology, histopathology, systemic invasion and immune responses were evaluated. SG Fla+ infection resulted in later development of clinical signs, lower mortality, lower bacterial numbers in the liver and spleen, and less severe pathological changes compared to SG. The CD8+ T lymphocyte population was higher in the livers of chicks infected with SG at 4 days post-inoculation (dpi). Chicks infected with SG had increased expression of interleukin (IL)-6 mRNA in the caecal tonsil at 1 dpi and increased expression of IL-18 mRNA in the spleen at 4 dpi. In contrast, the CD4+ T lymphocyte population was higher at 6 dpi in the livers of birds infected with SG Fla+. Therefore, flagella appeared to modulate the chicken immune response towards a CD4+ T profile, resulting in more efficient bacterial clearance from systemic sites and milder infection
Corrections to the statistical entropy of five dimensional black holes
We compute the statistical entropy of the three charge (D1-D5-p) five
dimensional black hole to sub-leading order in a large charge expansion. We
find an agreement with the macroscopic calculation of the Wald entropy in R^2
corrected supergravity theory. The two calculations have a overlapping regime
of validity which is not the Cardy regime. We use this result to clarify the
4d-5d lift for black holes on Taub-NUT space. In particular, we compute
sub-leading corrections to the formula S^{4d} = S^{5d}. In the microscopic
analysis, this correction arises from excitations bound to the Taub-NUT space.
In the macroscopic picture, the difference is accounted by a mechanism present
in a higher derivative theory wherein the geometry of the Taub-NUT space

Search for and Using Genetic Programming Event Selection
We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the double Cabibbo
suppressed decays and .
We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find
\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^-\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^-
\pi^+ and D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+
\pi^-D_s^+ \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ where
the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Expressed as
90% confidence levels (CL), we find and respectively.
This is the first successful use of genetic programming in a high energy

A Non-parametric Approach to the D+ to K*0bar mu+ nu Form Factors
Using a large sample of D+ -> K- pi+ mu+ nu decays collected by the FOCUS
photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first measurements of
the helicity basis form factors free from the assumption of spectroscopic pole
dominance. We also present the first information on the form factor that
controls the s-wave interference discussed in a previous paper by the FOCUS
collaboration. We find reasonable agreement with the usual assumption of
spectroscopic pole dominance and measured form factor ratios.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, and 2 tables. We updated the previous version by

Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ decay to pi+pi-pi+ using the K-matrix formalism
FOCUS results from Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ to pi+pi-pi+ are
presented. The K-matrix formalism is applied to charm decays for the first time
to fully exploit the already existing knowledge coming from the light-meson
spectroscopy experiments. In particular all the measured dynamics of the S-wave
pipi scattering, characterized by broad/overlapping resonances and large
non-resonant background, can be properly included. This paper studies the
extent to which the K-matrix approach is able to reproduce the observed Dalitz
plot and thus help us to understand the underlying dynamics. The results are
discussed, along with their possible implications on the controversial nature

Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay D^0 -> \pi^-\mu^+\nu relative to D^0 -> K^-\mu^+\nu
We present a new measurement of the branching ratio of the Cabibbo suppressed
decay D^0\to \pi^-\mu^+\nu relative to the Cabibbo favored decay D^0\to
K^-\mu^+\nu and an improved measurement of the ratio
|\frac{f_+^{\pi}(0)}{f_+^{K}(0)}|. Our results are 0.074 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.007
for the branching ratio and 0.85 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01 for the form factor

Measurements of Branching Ratios
Using data collected by the fixed target Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we
measure the branching ratios of the Cabibbo favored decays , , and relative to to be
, , and ,
respectively. We report the first observation of the Cabibbo suppressed decay
and we measure the branching ratio relative to
to be . We also set 90%
confidence level upper limits for and relative to to
be 0.12 and 0.05, respectively. We find an indication of the decays and and set
90% confidence level upper limits for the branching ratios with respect to
to be 0.12 and 1.72, respectively. Finally, we
determine the 90% C.L. upper limit for the resonant contribution relative to to be 0.10.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
A Non-parametric Approach to Measuring the \kpi{} Amplitudes in \dpkkpi{} Decay
Using a large sample of \dpkkpi{} decays collected by the FOCUS
photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present the first non-parametric
analysis of the \kpi{} amplitudes in \dpkkpi{} decay. The technique is similar
to the technique used for our non-parametric measurements of the \krzmndk{}
form factors. Although these results are in rough agreement with those of E687,
we observe a wider S-wave contribution for the \ksw{} contribution than the
standard, PDG \cite{pdg} Breit-Wigner parameterization. We have some weaker
evidence for the existence of a new, D-wave component at low values of the mass.Comment: 13 pages 3 figure
