On the photometric variability of blue supergiants in NGC 300 and its impact on the Flux-weighted Gravity-Luminosity Relationship
We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically
confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period
of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in
a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from
0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show
their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming
that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric
luminosity, we test for the influence of this variability on the Flux-weighted
Gravity--Luminosity Relationship and find a negligible effect, showing that the
calibration of this relationship, which has the potential to measure
extragalactic distances at the Cepheid accuracy level, is not affected by the

The highly polarized open cluster Trumpler 27
We have carried out multicolor linear polarimetry (UBVRI) of the brightest
stars in the area of the open cluster Trumpler 27. Our data show a high level
of polarization in the stellar light with a considerable dispersion, from to . The polarization vectors of the cluster members appear to be
aligned. Foreground polarization was estimated from the data of some non-member
objects, for which two different components were resolved: the first one
associated with a dust cloud close to the Sun producing
and degrees, and a second component, the main source of
polarization for the cluster members, originated in another dust cloud, which
polarizes the light in the direction of degrees. From a detailed
analysis, we found that the two components have associated values for the first one, and for the other. Due the
difference in the orientation of both polarization vectors, almost 90 degrees
(180 degrees at the Stokes representation), the first cloud (

Background: Previous studies investigating the travellers knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) profile indicated an important educational need among those travelling to risk destinations. Methods: In the years 2002-2009 an annually repeated cross-sectional questionnaire based survey was conducted at the Dutch Schiphol Airport with the aim to study trends in KAP of travel risk groups toward prevention of hepatitis B. The frequently encountered risk groups last-minute travellers, solo-travellers, business travellers, travellers visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and elderly travellers were specifically studied. Results: A total of 3045 respondents were included in the survey. Travellers to destinations with a high risk for hepatitis B had significantly less accurate risk perceptions (knowledge) than travellers to low-risk destinations but no differences were observed in past risk-taking attitude. Protection rates against hepatitis B were significantly higher in travellers to high-risk destinations. There was a positive trend over the years in the proportion of travellers to high-risk destinations seeking travel health advice. In accordance with this, trend analyses also indicated rising protection rates against hepatitis B. No significant trends in protection over time were observed for the travel risk groups. Conclusions: The results of this repeated cross-sectional survey suggest an annual 10% increase in protection rates against hepatitis B in Dutch travellers, both to destinations with a high risk and to destinations with a lower risk of hepatitis B, but these trends in protection rates were not observed for the travel risk groups to high-risk destinations. The KAP profile of last-minute travellers and (to a lesser extent) VFRs showed an increased relative risk in hepatitis B, irrespective of the travel destination, underlining the need for specific targeting of these travel risk groups. Excited-state OH Mainline Masers in AU Geminorum and NML Cygni
Excited-state OH maser emission has previously been reported in the
circumstellar envelopes of only two evolved stars: the Mira star AU Geminorum
and the hypergiant NML Cygni. We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of
the 1665, 1667, and excited-state 4750 MHz mainline OH transitions in AU Gem
and Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) observations of the excited-state 6030 and
6035 MHz OH mainline transitions in NML Cyg. We detect masers in both mainline
transitions in AU Gem but no excited-state emission in either star. We conclude
that the excited-state OH emission in AU Gem is either a transient phenomenon
(such as for NML Cyg outlined below), or possibly an artifact in the data, and
that the excited state OH emission in NML Cyg was generated by an episode of
enhanced shock between the stellar mass-loss and an outflow of the Cyg OB2
association. With these single exceptions, it therefore appears that
excited-state OH emission indeed should not be predicted nor observable in

Two New LBV Candidates in the M33 Galaxy
We present two new luminous blue variable (LBV) candidate stars discovered in
the M33 galaxy. We identified these stars (Valeev et al. 2010) as massive star
candidates at the final stages of evolution, presumably with a notable
interstellar extinction. The candidates were selected from the Massey et al.
(2006) catalog based on the following criteria: emission in Halpha, V<18.5 and
0.35<(B-V)<1.2. The spectra of both stars reveal a broad and strong Halpha
emission with extended wings (770 and 1000 km/s). Based on the spectra we
estimated the main parameters of the stars. Object N45901 has a bolometric
luminosity log(L/Lsun)=6.0-6.2 with the value of interstellar extinction
Av=2.3+-0.1. The temperature of the star's photosphere is estimated as
Tstar~13000-15000K its probable mass on the Zero Age Main Sequence is
M~60-80Msun. The infrared excess in N45901 corresponds to the emission of warm
dust with the temperature Twarm~1000K, and amounts to 0.1% of the bolometric
luminosity. A comparison of stellar magnitude estimates from different catalogs
points to the probable variability of the object N45901. Bolometric luminosity
of the second object, N125093, is log(L/Lsun)=6.3-6.6, the value of
interstellar extinction is Av=2.75+-0.15. We estimate its photosphere's
temperature as Tstar~13000-16000K, the initial mass as M~90-120Msun. The
infrared excess in N125093 amounts to 5-6% of the bolometric luminosity. Its
spectral energy distribution reveals two thermal components with the
temperatures Twarm~1000K and Tcold~480K. The [CaII] lines (7291A and 7323A),
observed in LBV-like stars VarA and N93351 in M33, are also present in the
spectrum of N125093. These lines indicate relatively recent gas eruptions and
dust activity linked with them. High bolometric luminosity of these stars and
broad Halpha emissions allow classifying the studied objects as LBV candidates.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Galactic Structure Toward the Carina Tangent
This investigation presents a photometric study of the Galactic structure
toward the Carina arm tangent. The field is located between 280 deg and 286 deg
galactic longitude and -4 deg to 4 deg galactic latitude. All currently
available uvbybeta data is used to obtain homogeneous color excesses and
distances for more than 260 stars of spectral types O to G. We present revised
distances and average extinction for the open clusters and cluster candidates
NGC 3293, NGC 3114, Loden 46 and Loden 112. The cluster candidate Loden 112
appears to be a very compact group at a true distance modulus of 11.06 +\- 0.11
(s.e.) (1629 +84,-80 pc), significantly closer than previous estimates. We
found other OB stars at that same distance and, based on their proper motions,
suggest a new OB association at coordinates 282 deg < l < 285 deg, -2 deg < b <
2 deg. Utilizing BV photometry and spectral classification of the known O-type
stars in the very young open cluster Wd 2 we provide a new distance estimate of
14.13 +\-0.16 (s.e.) (6698 +512,-475 pc), in excellent agreement with recent
distance determinations to the giant molecular structures in this direction. We
also discuss a possible connection between the HII region RCW 45 and the
highly-reddened B+ star CPD -55 3036 and provide a revised distance for the
luminous blue variable HR Car.Comment: accepted to PAS
LONGITUDINAL STUDY OFRPE65-ASSOCIATED INHERITED RETINAL DEGENERATIONS
Purpose: To study the disease course ofRPE65-associated inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs) as a function of the genotype, define a critical age for blindness, and identify potential modifiers. Methods: Forty-five patients with IRD from 33 families with biallelicRPE65mutations, 28 stemming from a genetic isolate. We collected retrospective data from medical charts. Coexisting variants in 108 IRD-associated genes were identified with Molecular Inversion Probe analysis. Results: Most patients were diagnosed within the first years of life. Daytime visual function ranged from near-normal to blindness in the first four decades and met WHO criteria for blindness for visual acuity and visual field in the fifth decade. p.(Thr368His) was the most common variant (54%). Intrafamilial variability and interfamilial variability in disease severity and progression were observed. Molecular Inversion Probe analysis confirmed allRPE65variants and identified one additional variant inLRATand one inEYSin two separate patients. Conclusion: All patients withRPE65-associated IRDs developed symptoms within the first year of life. Visual function in childhood and adolescence varied but deteriorated inevitably toward blindness after age 40. In this study, genotype was not predictive of clinical course. The variance in severity of disease could not be explained by double hits in other IRD genes
The Missing Luminous Blue Variables and the Bistability Jump
We discuss an interesting feature of the distribution of luminous blue
variables on the H-R diagram, and we propose a connection with the bistability
jump in the winds of early-type supergiants. There appears to be a deficiency
of quiescent LBVs on the S Dor instability strip at luminosities between log
L/Lsun = 5.6 and 5.8. The upper boundary, is also where the
temperature-dependent S Dor instability strip intersects the bistability jump
at about 21,000 K. Due to increased opacity, winds of early-type supergiants
are slower and denser on the cool side of the bistability jump, and we
postulate that this may trigger optically-thick winds that inhibit quiescent
LBVs from residing there. We conduct numerical simulations of radiation-driven
winds for a range of temperatures, masses, and velocity laws at log L/Lsun=5.7
to see what effect the bistability jump should have. We find that for
relatively low stellar masses the increase in wind density at the bistability
jump leads to the formation of a modest to strong pseudo photosphere -- enough
to make an early B-type star appear as a yellow hypergiant. Thus, the proposed
mechanism will be most relevant for LBVs that are post-red supergiants. Yellow
hypergiants like IRC+10420 and rho Cas occupy the same luminosity range as the
``missing'' LBVs, and show apparent temperature variations at constant
luminosity. If these yellow hypergiants do eventually become Wolf-Rayet stars,
we speculate that they may skip the normal LBV phase, at least as far as their
apparent positions on the HR diagram are concerned.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figs, accepted by Ap
Detection of high-velocity material from the wind-wind collision zone of Eta Carinae across the 2009.0 periastron passage
We report near-IR spectroscopic observations of the Eta Carinae massive
binary system during 2008-2009 using VLT/CRIRES. We detect a strong, broad
absorption wing in He I 10833 extending up to -1900 km/s across the 2009.0
spectroscopic event. Archival HST/STIS ultraviolet and optical data shows a
similar high-velocity absorption (up to -2100 km/s) in the UV resonance lines
of Si IV 1394, 1403 across the 2003.5 event. UV lines from low-ionization
species, such as Si II 1527, 1533 and C II 1334, 1335, show absorption up to
-1200 km/s, indicating that the absorption with v from -1200 to -2100 km/s
originates in a region markedly faster and more ionized than the nominal wind
of the primary star. Observations obtained at the OPD/LNA during the last 4
spectroscopic cycles (1989-2009) also display high-velocity absorption in He I
10833 during periastron. Based on the OPD/LNA dataset, we determine that
material with v < -900 km/s is present in the phase range 0.976 < phi < 1.023
of the spectroscopic cycle, but absent in spectra taken at phi < 0.947 and phi
> 1.049. Therefore, we constrain the duration of the high-velocity absorption
to be 95 to 206 days (or 0.047 to 0.102 in phase). We suggest that the
high-velocity absorption originates from shocked gas in the wind-wind collision
zone, at distances of 15 to 45 AU in the line-of-sight to the primary star.
Using 3-D hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision zone, we find
that the dense high-velocity gas is in the line-of-sight to the primary star
only if the binary system is oriented in the sky so that the companion is
behind the primary star during periastron, corresponding to a longitude of
periastron of omega ~ 240 to 270 degrees. We study a possible tilt of the
orbital plane relative to the Homunculus equatorial plane and conclude that our
data are broadly consistent with orbital inclinations in the range i=40 to 60
