    High Throughput MAC Protocol Using Sequential Collision Resolution and Outband Signalling

    AbstractSince the release of the IEEE 802.11 standard, several efforts have been made to improve its performance. By using collision resolution together with collision detection in wireless networks, the time spent on collision can be reduced, thus improving system throughput. In this paper, collision detection is initiated by the receiver and a Sequential Collision Resolution mechanism is proposed where preferential access is given to all the colliding packets. Extensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of this collision resolution protocol and a higher system throughput and lower delay is obtained

    Distribuição e associações de habitat do anuro Criticamente Ameaçado Walkerana phrynoderma (Anura: Ranixalidae), com uma avaliação das ameaças potenciais, abundância e morfologia. Pouco se sabe sobre Walkerana phrynoderma, um anuro endêmico dos Montes Anamalai dos Ghats Ocidentais da Índia. Com o objetivo de aumentar nosso conhecimento do status da espécie na natureza, fornecemos informações básicas (i.e., distribuição, ameaças, características do habitat, padrões de atividade e abundância relativa). Foram feitas investigações por encontro visual, transectos e orçamento temporal no interior e entorno dos Montes Anamalai dos Ghats Ocidentais. A secreção da pele dos animais foi amostrada para determinar a presença/ausência de Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, e foram registradas as características do habitat e do ambiente nos locais onde W. phrynoderma foi encontrada. Esses dados foram comparados com os dos locais em que a espécie estava aparentemente ausente. Walkerana phrynoderma está restrita às forestas perenifolias situadas entre 1300 e 1700 m a.s.l. na Reserva Anamalai Tiger e em Munnar; dessa forma, sua distribuição foi extendida do estado de Tamil Nadu para o estado vizinho de Kerala. As ameaças mais severas a essa espécia são o uso de pesticidas e perturbações antrópicas; B. dendrobatidis não foi detectado. Esse anuro norturno prefere bordas forestais e está associado com chãos de forestas bem sombreadas em áreas frescas próximo a riachos. Walkerana phrynoderma é raramente encontrada, enquanto sua congênere, W. leptodactyla, é mais comum. O impacto de perturbações antropogênicas, especialmente deposição de lixo e desenvolvimento de infraestrutura turística, deveria ser avaliado. A área de propriedade do Departamento de Florestas na periferia das áreas protegidas poderia ser designada como locais ecossensíveis para prevenir mudanças no uso da terra que pudessem ter um efeito adverso sobre W. phrynoderma.Distribution and habitat associations of the Critically Endangered frog Walkerana phrynoderma (Anura: Ranixalidae), with an assessment of potential threats, abundance, and morphology. Little is known about Walkerana phrynoderma, a frog endemic to the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats of India. Baseline information (i.e., distribution, threats, habitat characteristics, activity patterns, and relative abundance) is provided for this species, with the aim of improving our understanding of the status of the species in the wild. Visual-encounter, transect, and time-activity budget surveys were conducted in and around the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats. The frog skin was swabbed to determine the presence/absence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, and habitat and environmental characteristics were recorded at sites where W. phrynoderma was found. These data were compared with those of sites apparently lacking this species that had suitable habitat. Walkerana phrynoderma is restricted to evergreen forests between 1300 and 1700 m a.s.l. in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve and at Munnar; thus, its range was extended from the state of Tamil Nadu to the adjoining state of Kerala. Pesticide runoff and human disturbance are the most severe threats to the species; B. dendrobatidis was not detected. This nocturnal anuran prefers forest edges and is associated with well-shaded forest foors in cool areas near freshwater streams. Walkerana phrynoderma is rarely encountered whereas its congener, W. leptodactyla, is more common. The impact of anthropogenic disturbances, especially waste disposal and development of tourism infrastructure, should be evaluated. The land that is owned by the Forest Department peripheral to the protected areas could be designated as eco-sensitive sites to prevent changes in land use that could have an adverse effect on W. phrynoderma

    Investigating word affect features and fusion of probabilistic predictions incorporating uncertainty in AVEC 2017

    © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. Predicting emotion intensity and severity of depression are both challenging and important problems within the broader field of affective computing. As part of the AVEC 2017, we developed a number of systems to accomplish these tasks. In particular, word affect features, which derive human affect ratings (e.g. arousal and valence) from transcripts, were investigated for predicting depression severity and liking, showing great promise. A simple system based on the word affect features achieved an RMSE of 6.02 on the test set, yielding a relative improvement of 13.6% over the baseline. For the emotion prediction sub-challenge, we investigated multimodal fusion, which incorporated a measure of uncertainty associated with each prediction within an Output-Associative fusion framework for arousal and valence prediction, whilst liking prediction systems mainly focused on text-based features. Our best emotion prediction systems provided significant relative improvements over the baseline on the test set of 39.5%, 17.6%, and 29.3% for arousal, valence, and liking. Of particular note is that consistent improvements were observed when incorporating prediction uncertainty across various system configurations for predicting arousal and valence, suggesting the importance of taking into consideration prediction uncertainty for fusion and more broadly the advantages of probabilistic predictions

    The ORCA Hub: Explainable Offshore Robotics through Intelligent Interfaces

    We present the UK Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Hub for Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets (ORCA Hub), a 3.5 year EPSRC funded, multi-site project. The ORCA Hub vision is to use teams of robots and autonomous intelligent systems (AIS) to work on offshore energy platforms to enable cheaper, safer and more efficient working practices. The ORCA Hub will research, integrate, validate and deploy remote AIS solutions that can operate with existing and future offshore energy assets and sensors, interacting safely in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes in complex and cluttered environments, co-operating with remote operators. The goal is that through the use of such robotic systems offshore, the need for personnel will decrease. To enable this to happen, the remote operator will need a high level of situation awareness and key to this is the transparency of what the autonomous systems are doing and why. This increased transparency will facilitate a trusting relationship, which is particularly key in high-stakes, hazardous situations.Comment: 2 pages.     Acute kidney injury in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors

Methods We collected data on 429 patients with ICPi-AKI and 429 control patients who received ICPis contemporaneously but who did not develop ICPi-AKI from 30 sites in 10 countries. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of ICPi-AKI and its recovery. A multivariable Cox model was used to estimate the effect of ICPi rechallenge versus no rechallenge on survival following ICPi-AKI. Results ICPi-AKI occurred at a median of 16 weeks (IQR 8–32) following ICPi initiation. Lower baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, and extrarenal immune-related adverse events (irAEs) were each associated with a higher risk of ICPi-AKI. Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis was the most common lesion on kidney biopsy (125/151 biopsied patients [82.7%]). Renal recovery occurred in 276 patients (64.3%) at a median of 7 weeks (IQR 3–10) following ICPi-AKI. Treatment with corticosteroids within 14 days following ICPi-AKI diagnosis was associated with higher odds of renal recovery (adjusted OR 2.64; 95% CI 1.58 to 4.41). Among patients treated with corticosteroids, early initiation of corticosteroids (within 3 days of ICPi-AKI) was associated with a higher odds of renal recovery compared with later initiation (more than 3 days following ICPi-AKI) (adjusted OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.16 to 3.79). Of 121 patients rechallenged, 20 (16.5%) developed recurrent ICPi-AKI. There was no difference in survival among patients rechallenged versus those not rechallenged following ICPi-AKI. Conclusions Patients who developed ICPi-AKI were more likely to have impaired renal function at baseline, use a PPI, and have extrarenal irAEs. Two-thirds of patients had renal recovery following ICPi-AKI. Treatment with corticosteroids was associated with improved renal recovery.The authors have not declared a specific grant for this research from any funding agency in the public, commercial or not-for-profit sectors

    Activity and Process Stability of Purified Green Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Pectin Methylesterase

    Pectin methylesterase (PME) from green bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) was extracted and purified by affinity chromatography on a CNBr-Sepharose-PMEI column. A single protein peak with pectin methylesterase activity was observed. For the pepper PME, a biochemical characterization in terms of molar mass (MM), isoelectric points (pI), and kinetic parameters for activity and thermostability was performed. The optimum pH for PME activity at 22 °C was 7.5, and its optimum temperature at neutral pH was between 52.5 and 55.0 °C. The purified pepper PME required the presence of 0.13 M NaCl for optimum activity. Isothermal inactivation of purified pepper PME in 20 mM Tris buffer (pH 7.5) could be described by a fractional conversion model for lower temperatures (55?57 °C) and a biphasic model for higher temperatures (58?70 °C). The enzyme showed a stable behavior toward high-pressure/temperature treatments.     Mutagenicity of tamoxifen DNA adducts in human endometrial cells and in silico prediction of p53 mutation hotspots

    Tamoxifen elevates the risk of endometrial tumours in women and α-(N2-deoxyguanosinyl)-tamoxifen adducts are reportedly present in endometrial tissue of patients undergoing therapy. Given the widespread use of tamoxifen there is considerable interest in elucidating the mechanisms underlying treatment-associated cancer. Using a combined experimental and multivariate statistical approach we have examined the mutagenicity and potential consequences of adduct formation by reactive intermediates in target uterine cells. pSP189 plasmid containing the supF gene was incubated with α-acetoxytamoxifen or 4-hydroxytamoxifen quinone methide (4-OHtamQM) to generate dG-N2-tamoxifen and dG-N2-4-hydroxytamoxifen, respectively. Plasmids were replicated in Ishikawa cells then screened in Escherichia coli. Treatment with both α-acetoxytamoxifen and 4-OHtamQM caused a dose-related increase in adduct levels, resulting in a damage-dependent increase in mutation frequency for α-acetoxytamoxifen; 4-OHtamQM had no apparent effect. Only α-acetoxytamoxifen generated statistically different supF mutation spectra relative to the spontaneous pattern, with most mutations being GC→TA transversions. Application of the LwPy53 algorithm to the α-acetoxytamoxifen spectrum predicted strong GC→TA hotspots at codons 244 and 273. These signature alterations do not correlate with current reports of the mutations observed in endometrial carcinomas from treated women, suggesting that dG-N2-tam adduct formation in the p53 gene is not a prerequisite for endometrial cancer initiation in women

    Multisensory Oddity Detection as Bayesian Inference

    A key goal for the perceptual system is to optimally combine information from all the senses that may be available in order to develop the most accurate and unified picture possible of the outside world. The contemporary theoretical framework of ideal observer maximum likelihood integration (MLI) has been highly successful in modelling how the human brain combines information from a variety of different sensory modalities. However, in various recent experiments involving multisensory stimuli of uncertain correspondence, MLI breaks down as a successful model of sensory combination. Within the paradigm of direct stimulus estimation, perceptual models which use Bayesian inference to resolve correspondence have recently been shown to generalize successfully to these cases where MLI fails. This approach has been known variously as model inference, causal inference or structure inference. In this paper, we examine causal uncertainty in another important class of multi-sensory perception paradigm – that of oddity detection and demonstrate how a Bayesian ideal observer also treats oddity detection as a structure inference problem. We validate this approach by showing that it provides an intuitive and quantitative explanation of an important pair of multi-sensory oddity detection experiments – involving cues across and within modalities – for which MLI previously failed dramatically, allowing a novel unifying treatment of within and cross modal multisensory perception. Our successful application of structure inference models to the new ‘oddity detection’ paradigm, and the resultant unified explanation of across and within modality cases provide further evidence to suggest that structure inference may be a commonly evolved principle for combining perceptual information in the brain
