    Effects of noise suppression and envelope dynamic range compression on the intelligibility of vocoded sentences for a tonal language

    Vocoder simulation studies have suggested that the carrier signal type employed affects the intelligibility of vocoded speech. The present work further assessed how carrier signal type interacts with additional signal processing, namely, single-channel noise suppression and envelope dynamic range compression, in determining the intelligibility of vocoder simulations. In Experiment 1, Mandarin sentences that had been corrupted by speech spectrum-shaped noise (SSN) or two-talker babble (2TB) were processed by one of four single-channel noise-suppression algorithms before undergoing tone-vocoded (TV) or noise-vocoded (NV) processing. In Experiment 2, dynamic ranges of multiband envelope waveforms were compressed by scaling of the mean-removed envelope waveforms with a compression factor before undergoing TV or NV processing. TV Mandarin sentences yielded higher intelligibility scores with normal-hearing (NH) listeners than did noise-vocoded sentences. The intelligibility advantage of noise-suppressed vocoded speech depended on the masker type (SSN vs 2TB). NV speech was more negatively influenced by envelope dynamic range compression than was TV speech. These findings suggest that an interactional effect exists between the carrier signal type employed in the vocoding process and envelope distortion caused by signal processing

    A nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for water waves on finite depth with constant vorticity

    A nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for the envelope of two dimensional surface water waves on finite depth with non zero constant vorticity is derived, and the influence of this constant vorticity on the well known stability properties of weakly nonlinear wave packets is studied. It is demonstrated that vorticity modifies significantly the modulational instability properties of weakly nonlinear plane waves, namely the growth rate and bandwidth. At third order we have shown the importance of the coupling between the mean flow induced by the modulation and the vorticity. Furthermore, it is shown that these plane wave solutions may be linearly stable to modulational instability for an opposite shear current independently of the dimensionless parameter kh, where k and h are the carrier wavenumber and depth respectively

    The use of ultrasonic reflection is emerging as a technique for studying tribological contacts. Ultrasonic waves can be transmitted non-destructively through machine components and their behaviour at an interface describes the characteristics of that contact. This paper is a review of the current state of understanding of the mechanisms of ultrasonic reflection at interfaces, and how this has been used to investigate the processes of dry rough surface contact and lubricated contact. The review extends to cover how ultrasound has been used to study the tribological function of certain engineering machine elements

    Accelerated dynamic Fourier velocity encoding by exploiting velocity-spatio-temporal correlations

    Objective: To describe how the information content in a Fourier velocity encoding (FVE) scan can be transformed into a very sparse representation and to develop a method that exploits the compactness of the data to significantly accelerate the acquisition. Materials and Methods: For validation, fully sampled FVE datasets were acquired in phantom and in vivo experiments. Fivefold and eightfold acceleration was simulated by using only one fifth or one eighth of the data for reconstruction in the proposed method based on the k-t BLAST framework. Reconstructed images were compared quantitatively to those from the fully sampled data. Results: Velocity spectra in the accelerated datasets were comparable to the spectra from fully sampled datasets. The detected peak velocities remained accurate even at eightfold acceleration, and the overall shape of the spectra was well preserved. Slight temporal smoothing was seen in the accelerated datasets. Conclusion: A novel technique for accelerating time-resolved FVE scan is presented. It is possible to accelerate FVE to acquisition speeds comparable to a standard time-resolved phase-contrast sca

    The one-loop ultraviolet divergences of the quantized coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills fields are evaluated. They are precisely of the same nonrenormalizable form as for a corresponding set of free Maxwell fields together with the usual flat-space Yang-Mills divergences. The two free Yang-Mills field parameters, namely the group dimension and the self-coupling constant, cannot be chosen to make the one-loop divergences renormalizable in the usual sense

    AbstractOBJECTIVESWe sought to determine whether asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) inhibits nitric oxide (NO) elaboration in cultured human endothelial cells and whether this is associated with the activation of oxidant-sensitive signaling mediating endothelial adhesiveness for monocytes.BACKGROUNDEndothelial NO elaboration is impaired in hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, which may be due to elevated concentrations of ADMA, an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase.METHODSHuman umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECV 304) and human monocytoid cells (THP-1) were studied in a functional binding assay. Nitric oxide and superoxide anion (O2−) were measured by chemiluminescence; ADMA by high pressure liquid chromatography; monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) by ELISA and NF-κB by electromobility gel shift assay.RESULTSIncubation of endothelial cells with ADMA (0.1 μM to 100 μM) inhibited NO formation, which was reversed by coincubation with L-arginine (1 mM). The biologically inactive stereoisomer symmetric dimethylarginine did not inhibit NO release. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (10 μM) or native low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (100 mg/dL) increased endothelial O2− to the same degree. Asymmetric dimethylarginine also stimulated MCP-1 formation by endothelial cells. This effect was paralleled by activation of the redox-sensitive transcription factor NF-κB. Preincubation of endothelial cells with ADMA increased the adhesiveness of endothelial cells for THP-1 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Asymmetric dimethylarginine-induced monocyte binding was diminished by L-arginine or by a neutralizing anti-MCP-1 antibody.CONCLUSIONSWe concluded that the endogenous NO synthase inhibitor ADMA is synthesized in human endothelial cells. Asymmetric dimethylarginine increases endothelial oxidative stress and potentiates monocyte binding. Asymmetric dimethylarginine may be an endogenous proatherogenic molecule

    Discovering the Higgs boson is one of the primary goals of both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The present status of the Higgs search is reviewed and future prospects for discovery at the Tevatron and LHC are considered. This talk focuses primarily on the Higgs boson of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension.     Telomerase activation in nasopharyngeal carcinomas.

    Nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) are common in Hong Kong and southern China but rare in Western countries. Telomerase activation is common in human cancers but has not been reported previously in NPC. Telomerase activation in NPC was determined using the sensitive TRAP (telomerase rapid amplification protocol) assay in 45 nasopharyngeal biopsies (36 NPC, nine normal nasopharyngeal mucosae) in four xenografted NPC tumours established in nude mice and in five in vitro NPC cell lines. Telomerase activation is common in NPC and can be detected at high frequencies (85% in primary tumours and 100% in recurrent tumours). The frequency of telomerase activation was lowest in NPC biopsies without lymph node involvement (60%) compared with those with positive lymph node involvement (100%), and the difference is statistically significant (P < 0.05; Fisher exact test). All the xenografted NPC tumours and in vitro NPC cell lines were strongly positive for telomerase activity. Our results suggest that telomerase activation is common in NPC and it may be useful as a diagnostic marker in the detection of tumour cells in nasopharyngeal biopsies. The high frequency of telomerase activation in stage I NPC (80% positive) suggests that it is an early event in tumour progression
