    A great variety of ecodesign tools exists but the actual implementation level of such tools remains limited or not successfully integrated throughout the different company processes. This article provides a literature review of the existing tools that can be used in various company departments. From this review, 625 tools were found and characterized. A guide (or information system) has been then developed to help companies to choose ecodesign tools for three targets: production, management or communication. In order to facilitate these choices, a free computerized version of this guide, called « Eco-Tool-Seeker », has been developed

    International audienceNanoscience is a field that has stood out in recent years. The accurate long-term health and environmental risks associated with these emerging materials are unknown. Therefore, this work investigated how to eliminate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from synthetic effluents by electrocoagulation (EC) due to the widespread use of this type of nanoparticle (NP) in industry and its potential inhibition power over microorganisms responsible for biological treatment in effluent treatment plants. Synthesized AgNPs were studied via four different routes by chemical reduction in aqueous solutions to simulate the chemical variations of a hypothetical industrial effluent, and efficiency conditions of the EC treatment were determined. All routes used silver nitrate as the source of silver ions, and two synthesis routes were studied with sodium citrate as a stabilizer. In route I, sodium citrate functioned simultaneously as the reducing agent and stabilizing agent, whereas route II used sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. Route III used d-glucose as the reducing agent and sodium pyrophosphate as the stabilizer; route IV used sodium pyrophosphate as the stabilizing agent and sodium borohydride as the reducing agent. The efficiency of the EC process of the different synthesized solutions was studied. For route I, after 85 min of treatment, a significant decrease in the plasmon resonance peak of the sample was observed, which reflects the efficiency in the mass reduction of AgNPs in the solution by 98.6%. In route II, after 12 min of EC, the absorbance results reached the detection limit of the measurement instrument, which indicates a minimum reduction of 99.9% of AgNPs in the solution. During the 4 min of treatment in route III, the absorbance intensities again reached the detection limit, which indicates a minimum reduction of 99.8%. In route IV, after 10 min of treatment, a minimum AgNP reduction of 99.9% was observed. Based on these results, it was possible to verify that the solutions containing citrate considerably increased the necessary times required to eliminate AgNPs from the synthesized effluent, whereas solutions free of this reagent showed better results on floc formation and, therefore, are best for the treatment. The elimination of AgNPs from effluents by EC proved effective for the studied routes

    “Eco-tool-seeker”: A new and unique business guide for choosing ecodesign tools

    Environmental sustainability has emerged as a key issue amongst governments, policymakers, researchers, companies and the general public. In Europe, governments are trying to encourage companies to integrate ecodesign into their processes. A great variety of ecodesign tools exists but the actual implementation level of such tools remains limited or not successfully integrated throughout the different company processes. Having identified the main barriers to ecodesign implementation, this article provides a literature review of the existing tools that can be used in various company departments. From this review, 629 tools were found and characterized. Taxonomy was established to classify these tools into 22 categories of ecodesign tools and 5 departments in companies. These tools are classified as normative or non-normative which can be generic or sectorial as well as “environmental” or “improvement”. A guide (or information system) has been then developed to help companies to choose ecodesign tools for three targets: production, management or communication. The proposed guide can also be useful for researchers, teachers, and trainers. In order to facilitate these choices, a free computerized version of this guide, called “Eco-tool-seeker”, has been developed

    Electrocoagulation as a green technology for phosphate removal from River water

    The current study investigates the removal of phosphate from water using a new baffle plates aluminium-based electrochemical cell (PBPR) taking consideration the influence of key operating parameters. This new cell utilises perforated baffle plates as a water mixer rather than magnetic stirrers that require extra power to work. As this unit is new, a comprehensive study has been carried to assess it performance. This study also includes preliminary estimates of the reactor’s operating costs, the amount of H2 gas produced and the yieldable energy from it. SEM (scanning electron microscope) was used to investigate the influence of the electrocoagulation process on the morphology of the surface of aluminium electrodes, and an empirical model developed to reproduce the phosphate removal process. The results showed that 99% of phosphate was removed within 60 minutes of electrolysis at an initial pH (ipH) of 6, inter-electrode distance (ID) of 0.5 cm, current density (J) of 6 mA/cm2, initial concentration of phosphate (IC) of 100 mg/L, and minimum operating cost of 0.503 US $/m3. The electrochemical cell produced enough H2 gas to generate 4.34 kWh/m3 of power. Statistically, it was proved that the influence of the operating parameters on phosphate removal could be modelled with an R2 of 0.882, the influence of these operating parameters on phosphate removal following the order: t>J>IC>ipH >ID. Finally, SEM images showed that after several electrolysing runs, the Al anode became rough and nonuniform which could be related to the production of aluminium hydroxides

    Newly identified tumor suppressor functions of ING proteins

    International audienceThe INhibitor of Growth (ING) proteins (ING1, ING2, ING3, ING4 and ING5) are a family of epigenetic regulators. Their decreased expression in numerous cancers led to identifying the ING proteins as gatekeeper tumor suppressors as they regulate cell cycle progression, apoptosis and senescence. Subsequently, they were also described as caretaker tumor suppressors through their involvement in DNA replication and the DNA damage response (DDR). Recent studies have identified new interactions of the ING proteins with proteins or pathways implicated in cell proliferation, the maintenance of stem cells pluripotency or the DDR. Furthermore, the ING proteins have been identified as regulators of ribosomal RNA synthesis and of mRNA stability and as regulators of mitochondrial DNA transcription resulting in the regulation of metabolism. These new findings highlight new antitumorigenic activities of the ING proteins that are potential targets for cancer treatment. © 2022 The Author

    Development and validation of a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous determination of buprenorphine, flunitrazepam and their metabolites in rat plasma: application to the pharmacokinetic study.

    International audienceBuprenorphine (BUP), a synthetic opioid analgesic, is frequently abused alone, and in association with benzodiazepines. Fatalities involving buprenorphine alone seem very unusual while its association with benzodiazepines, such as flunitrazepam (FNZ), has been reported to result in severe respiratory depression and death. The quantitative relationship between these drugs remain, however, uncertain. Our objective was to develop an analytical method that could be used as a means to study and explore, in animals, the toxicity and pharmacological interaction mechanisms between buprenorphine, flunitrazepam and their active metabolites. A procedure based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is described for the simultaneous analysis of buprenorphine, norbuprenorphine (NBUP), flunitrazepam, N-desmethylflunitrazepam (N-DMFNZ) and 7-aminoflunitrazepam (7-AFNZ) in rat plasma. The method was set up and adapted for the analysis of small plasma samples taken from rats. Plasma samples were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction using Toxi-tubes A. Extracted compounds were derivatized with N,O-bis-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA), using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) as a catalyst. They were then separated by GC on a crosslinked 5% phenyl-methylpolysiloxane analytical column and determined by a quadrupole mass spectrometer detector operated under selected ion monitoring mode. Excellent linearity was found between 0.125 and 25 ng/microl plasma for BUP, 0.125 and 12.5 ng/microl for NBUP and N-DMFNZ, 0.125 and 5 ng/microl for FNZ, and between 0.025 and 50 ng/microl for 7-AFNZ. The limit of quantification was 0.025 ng/microl plasma for 7-AFNZ and 0.125 ng/microl for the four other compounds. A good reproducibility (intra-assay CV=0.32-11.69%; inter-assay CV=0.63-9.55%) and accuracy (intra-assay error=2.58-12.73%; inter-assay error=0.83-11.07%) were attained. Recoveries were 71, 67 and 81%, for BUP, FNZ and N-DMFNZ, respectively, and 51% for NBUP and 7-AFNZ, with CV ranging from 5.4 to 13.9%, and were concentration-independent. The GC-MS method was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study of BUP, NBUP, FNZ, DMFNZ and 7-AFNZ in rats, after administration of BUP and FNZ
