    DENS INVAGINATUS (DENS IN DENTE): A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH. CASE REPORT

    Aim: The purpose of this report was to demonstrate how a multidisciplinary surgical and endodontic approach in this type of tooth anomaly, may improve the prognosis both functionally and aesthetically. Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from infolding of the surface of the tooth crown before calcification has occurred. Many mechanisms have been proposed as a cause of this phenomenon, including local delay in enamel formation, infolding of the enamel organ within the dental pulp and local external influences on the tooth germ, but the aetiology of dens in dente is still not entirely known. The most common teeth interested by this malformation are maxillary lateral incisors, sometimes it occurs bilaterally. Morphologically the malformation is classified in three types: Type I: An enamel-lined minor invagination occurring within the crown not extending beyond the amelocemental junction. Type II: An enamel-lined form that invades the root but remains confined as a blind sac. It may or not communicate with dental pulp. Type III: a form that penetrates through the root perforating at the apical area showing ā€œa second foramenā€ in the apical or periodontal area. There is no immediate communication with the pulp. The invagination may be completely lined by enamel, but frequently cementum will be found lining the invagination. The invagination commonly communicates with the oral cavity, allowing the entry of irritants and microorganisms either to the pulpal tissue or to an area that is only separated from pulpal tissue by a thin layer of dentin or enamel. This continual admission of irritants and the consequent inflammation usually leads to necrosis of the adjacent pulpal tissue and induces a periodontal or apical abscess. Other reported sequels of undiagnosed and untreated invaginated teeth include cysts, delay eruption and internal resorption. Sometimes Dens in Dente is associated with dental anomalies like taurodontia, microdontia, supernumerary teeth, gemination, and dentinogenesis imperfecta. Description and procedures: A 24- year old male patient came to the Dental Clinic for aesthetic reasons. Intraoral examination disclosed the presence of a maxillary right lateral incisor with unusual morphological features. The crown of the tooth had a peg-shaped appearance. Radiological evaluation showed that a large periapical lesion existed corresponding to the area of the lateral incisor, and irregular root canal borders and an enamel-lined invagination extended through the root. A Type III Dens Invaginatus was diagnosed. The patient was invited to have a maxillary Dental Scan done that showed exactly the wideness of the bone loss. After several irrigations with 5% NaClO, the endodontic treatment was performed: Ca(OH)2 was left in the root canal for one month and then Thermafil Obturators (Dentsply, Maillefer) were used for endodontic closure. After eight months, although the initial improvement , we decided for the surgical removal of the cysts and apicectomy of the tooth. Conclusion: Dens invaginatus has an unpredictable root canals anatomy. For a good clinical outcome we need to associate the surgical approach with the endodontic treatment

    Redox-Active Ferrocene grafted on H-Terminated Si(111): Electrochemical Characterization of the Charge Transport Mechanism and Dynamics

    Electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) bearing a ferrocene (Fc) redox couple were chemically assembled on H-terminated semiconducting degenerate-doped n-type Si(111) substrate. This allows to create a Si(111)|organic-spacer|Fc hybrid interface, where the ferrocene moiety is covalently immobilized on the silicon, via two alkyl molecular spacers of different length. Organic monolayer formation was probed by Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, which were also used to estimate thickness and surface assembled monolayer (SAM) surface coverage. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements allowed to ascertain surface morphology and roughness. The single electron transfer process, between the ferrocene redox probe and the Si electrode surface, was probed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. CVs recorded at different scan rates, in the 10 to 500 mV sāˆ’1 range, allowed to determine peak-to-peak separation, half-wave potential, and charge-transfer rate constant (KET). The experimental findings suggest that the electron transfer is a one electron quasi-reversible process. The present demonstration of surface engineering of functional redox-active organometallic molecule can be efficient in the field of molecular electronics, surface-base redox chemistry, opto-electronic applications

    The paper reports two study cases showing integrated analyses of microscopic records (pollen, coprophilous fungi and parasites remains) which are of basic importance to reconstruct past breeding and pastoral activities in Italy. The sites are located at Piano Locce (1225 m a.s.l., Barisciano, Lā€™Aquila) in a depression in a mountain area and in the Bradano Valley (about 150-500 m a.s.l., Basilicata) in a hilly area rich in archaeological sites. The pollen-based palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of Piano Locce provided the history of plants landscape from around 36.000 years BP. Before the Holocene, a steppe vegetation and a grassland characterized the area where wild animals freely browsed. This assumption is strongly supported by the association of spores of coprophilous fungi with intestinal parasites eggs (Dicrocoelium) and pollen clumps. The trend of coprophilous fungi and pollen assemblages including Anthropogenic Indicators shows that, after the wild animals browsing, a fairly continuous presence of domesticated animals, prevalently ovicaprines, interested the area in the Holocene. The archaeological sites of Difesa San Biagio and Altojanni in Bradano Valley showed evidences of ovicaprine-farming and cattle breeding during Hellenistic and Mediaeval periods. In particular, Cichorioideae, Chenopodiaceae and Brassicaceae pollen and spores of coprophilous fungi (such as Sordaria type, Sporormiella and Podospora type) attest the predominance of pastoral activities during the Hellenistic period at San Biagio. A greater pollen biodiversity characterizes Altojanni, where spores of the coprophilous fungi were associated with spores of fungi with a different ecology as Chaetomium and Valsaria variospora type. The environmental and microarchaeobotanical contexts are in agreement with archaeological evidences that attest the presence of domestic animals, probably cattle, maintained in this site during Middle Ages

    Linear electronics for Si-detectors and its energy calibration for use in heavy ion experiments

    Abstract The design and implementation of linear electronics based on small-size, low-power charge preamplifiers and shaping amplifiers, used in connection with Si-detector telescopes employed in heavy ion experiments, are presented. Bench tests and "under beam" performances are discussed. In particular, the energy calibration and the linearity test of the overall system (Si-detector and linear and digital conversion electronics) has been performed with a procedure which avoids the pulse height defect problems connected with the detection of heavy ions. The procedure, basically, consists of using bursts of MeV protons, releasing up to GeV energies inside the detector, with low ionization density

    Tuber donnagotto, a new winter truffle species from Istria, Croatia

    Tuber donnagotto is a new winter black truffle belonging to the order Pezizales and the family Tuberaceae. It grows in winter in the calcareous gravel soil (pH 7.6ā€“7.8) near the Adriatic Sea (Rovinj, Istria, Croatia) in predominantly pine forests (Pinus halepensis). Although similar to other black truffles, it has very irregular and hard fruit bodies, lobate and knotted in form, with deep irregular cavities reaching the middle of the fruit bodies. These cavities are clearly evident in the cross-section of the fruit bodies. A distinctive characteristic of this truffle is the fact that when it is hermetically closed it can be kept in a refrigerator (2ā€“4 Ā°C) for more than 60 days. Tuber donnagotto has a slight but pleasant odor, reminiscent of boletus (Boletus reticulates, B. edulis). Furthermore, T. donnagotto has yellow-brownish and reticulate-alveolate spores, measuring 20ā€“30 Ɨ 20ā€“25 mm

    This backstory article deals with the SUCCESSO-TERRA Project (2017ā€“2020), an interdisciplinary research program aiming at reconstructing the land-use transformations that occurred during the development of the Terramare culture in the southern-central Po Plain of Northern Italy. Topics include climate-environment changes, human impact and exploitation of natural resources that are interconnected topics in human ecology and environmental sciences. These topics can only be understood in a long-term perspective integrating archaeology, geology, botany and other sciences. The text includes the theoretical basis, the research strategy and the main methodological approaches given by geoarchaeology and palynology, the two research sides constituting the partnership of the project

    The chapter reviews the syntax to store machine-readable annotations and describes the mapping between rule-based modelling entities (e.g., agents and rules) and these annotations. In particular, we review an annotation framework and the associated guidelines for annotating rule-based models of molecular interactions, encoded in the commonly used Kappa and BioNetGen languages, and present prototypes that can be used to extract and query the annotations. Initially focused on proteins found in human, mouse and Escherichia coli, PRO now includes representations of protein complexes. The PRO Consortium works in concert with the developers of other biomedical ontologies and protein knowledge bases to provide the ability to formally organize and integrate representations of precise protein forms so as to enhance accessibility to results of protein research.     Reactome: a database of reactions, pathways and biological processes

    Reactome (http://www.reactome.org) is a collaboration among groups at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York University School of Medicine and The European Bioinformatics Institute, to develop an open source curated bioinformatics database of human pathways and reactions. Recently, we developed a new web site with improved tools for pathway browsing and data analysis. The Pathway Browser is an Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN)-based visualization system that supports zooming, scrolling and event highlighting. It exploits PSIQUIC web services to overlay our curated pathways with molecular interaction data from the Reactome Functional Interaction Network and external interaction databases such as IntAct, BioGRID, ChEMBL, iRefIndex, MINT and STRING. Our Pathway and Expression Analysis tools enable ID mapping, pathway assignment and overrepresentation analysis of user-supplied data sets. To support pathway annotation and analysis in other species, we continue to make orthology-based inferences of pathways in non-human species, applying Ensembl Compara to identify orthologs of curated human proteins in each of 20 other species. The resulting inferred pathway sets can be browsed and analyzed with our Species Comparison tool. Collaborations are also underway to create manually curated data sets on the Reactome framework for chicken, Drosophila and rice

    Minimotif Miner 3.0: database expansion and significantly improved reduction of false-positive predictions from consensus sequences

    Minimotif Miner (MnM available at http://minimotifminer.org or http://mnm.engr.uconn.edu) is an online database for identifying new minimotifs in protein queries. Minimotifs are short contiguous peptide sequences that have a known function in at least one protein. Here we report the third release of the MnM database which has now grown 60-fold to approximately 300ā€‰000 minimotifs. Since short minimotifs are by their nature not very complex we also summarize a new set of false-positive filters and linear regression scoring that vastly enhance minimotif prediction accuracy on a test data set. This online database can be used to predict new functions in proteins and causes of disease
