Retroperitoneal extramedullary hematopoietic pseudotumor in ataxia-telangiectasia.
Ataxia-telangiectasia confers a significant increase in the development of several cancer types, most commonly leukemia and lymphoma. However, as the natural history for these patients is evolving and their lifespan is increasing, there is the potential for the development of additional uncommon tumors in an already rare patient population. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of an incidental retroperitoneal tumor in a 26-year-old woman undergoing evaluation for hepatic dysfunction. The mass was suspicious for retroperitoneal sarcoma, but proved to be an extramedullary hematopoietic pseudotumor after extensive pathologic evaluation. The changing landscape of neoplasms associated with ataxia-telangiectasia is discussed with emphasis on previously underreported benign and malignant tumors
Basal Chromospheric Flux and Maunder Minimum-type Stars: The quiet-Sun Chromosphere as a Universal Phenomenon
Aims: We demonstrate the universal character of the quiet-Sun chromosphere
among inactive stars (solar-type and giants). By assessing the main physical
processes, we shed new light on some common observational phenomena. Methods:
We discuss measurements of the solar Mt. Wilson S-index, obtained by the
Hamburg Robotic Telescope around the extreme minimum year 2009, and compare the
established chromospheric basal Ca II K line flux to the Mt. Wilson S-index
data of inactive ("flat activity") stars, including giants. Results: During the
unusually deep and extended activity minimum of 2009, the Sun reached S-index
values considerably lower than in any of its previously observed minima. In
several brief periods, the Sun coincided exactly with the S-indices of inactive
("flat", presumed Maunder Minimum-type) solar analogues of the Mt. Wilson
sample; at the same time, the solar visible surface was also free of any plages
or remaining weak activity regions. The corresponding minimum Ca II K flux of
the quiet Sun and of the presumed Maunder Minimum-type stars in the Mt. Wilson
sample are found to be identical to the corresponding Ca II K chromospheric
basal flux limit. Conclusions: We conclude that the quiet-Sun chromosphere is a
universal phenomenon among inactive stars. Its mixed-polarity magnetic field,
generated by a local, "fast" turbulent dynamo finally provides a natural
explanation for the minimal soft X-ray emission observed for inactive stars.
Given such a local dynamo also works for giant chromospheres, albeit on larger
length scales, i.e., l ~ R/g, with R and g as stellar radius and surface
gravity, respectively, the existence of giant spicular phenomena and the
guidance of mechanical energy toward the acceleration zone of cool stellar

Direct UV observations of the circumstellar envelope of alpha Orionis
Observations were made in the IUE LWP camera, low dispersion mode, with alpha Ori being offset various distances from the center of the Long Wavelength Large Aperture along its major axis. Signal was acquired at all offset positions and is comprised of unequal components of background/dark counts, telescope-scattered light, and scattered light emanating from the extended circumstellar shell. The star is known from optical and infrared observations to possess an extended, arc-minute sized, shell of cool material. Attempts to observe this shell with the IUE are described, although the deconvolution of the stellar signal from the telescope scattered light requires further calibration effort
'This is what democracy looks like' : New Labour's blind spot and peripheral vision
New Labour in government since 1997 has been roundly criticized for not possessing a clear, coherent and consistent democratic vision. The absence of such a grand vision has resulted, from this critical perspective, in an absence of 'joined-up' thinking about democracy in an evolving multi-level state. Tensions have been all too apparent between the government's desire to exert central direction - manifested in its most pathological form as 'control freakery' - and its democratising initiatives derived from 'third-way' obsessions with 'decentralising', 'empowering' and 'enabling'. The purpose of this article is to examine why New Labour displayed such apparently impaired democratic vision and why it appeared incapable of conceiving of democratic reform 'in the round'. This article seeks to explain these apparent paradoxes, however, through utilising the notion of 'macular degeneration'. In this analysis, the perceived democratic blind spot of New Labour at Westminster is connected to a democratic peripheral vision, which has envisaged innovative participatory and decentred initiatives in governance beyond Westminster

Evidence Concerning Instabilities of the Distant Geomagnetic Field: Pioneer I
The search-coil magnetometer carried on Pioneer I has yielded evidence of complex geomagnetic behavior at great distances from the earth. This paper is intended to report only some preliminary observations; in particular, what appears to be directional instability in the field. A comprehensive statistical analysis, to be reported later, is still in progress
Minimum-Uncertainty Angular Wave Packets and Quantized Mean Values
Uncertainty relations between a bounded coordinate operator and a conjugate
momentum operator frequently appear in quantum mechanics. We prove that
physically reasonable minimum-uncertainty solutions to such relations have
quantized expectation values of the conjugate momentum. This implies, for
example, that the mean angular momentum is quantized for any
minimum-uncertainty state obtained from any uncertainty relation involving the
angular-momentum operator and a conjugate coordinate. Experiments specifically
seeking to create minimum-uncertainty states localized in angular coordinates
therefore must produce packets with integer angular momentum.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review
