Dewetting of thin polymer films near the glass transition
Dewetting of ultra-thin polymer films near the glass transition exhibits
unexpected front morphologies [G. Reiter, Phys. Rev. Lett., 87, 186101 (2001)].
We present here the first theoretical attempt to understand these features,
focusing on the shear-thinning behaviour of these films. We analyse the profile
of the dewetting film, and characterize the time evolution of the dry region
radius, , and of the rim height, . After a transient time
depending on the initial thickness, grows like while
increases like . Different regimes of growth are

On the equivalence of pairing correlations and intrinsic vortical currents in rotating nuclei
The present paper establishes a link between pairing correlations in rotating
nuclei and collective vortical modes in the intrinsic frame. We show that the
latter can be embodied by a simple S-type coupling a la Chandrasekhar between
rotational and intrinsic vortical collective modes. This results from a
comparison between the solutions of microscopic calculations within the HFB and
the HF Routhian formalisms. The HF Routhian solutions are constrained to have
the same Kelvin circulation expectation value as the HFB ones. It is shown in
several mass regions, pairing regimes, and for various spin values that this
procedure yields moments of inertia, angular velocities, and current
distributions which are very similar within both formalisms. We finally present

Using Synchronic and Diachronic Relations for Summarizing Multiple Documents Describing Evolving Events
In this paper we present a fresh look at the problem of summarizing evolving
events from multiple sources. After a discussion concerning the nature of
evolving events we introduce a distinction between linearly and non-linearly
evolving events. We present then a general methodology for the automatic
creation of summaries from evolving events. At its heart lie the notions of
Synchronic and Diachronic cross-document Relations (SDRs), whose aim is the
identification of similarities and differences between sources, from a
synchronical and diachronical perspective. SDRs do not connect documents or
textual elements found therein, but structures one might call messages.
Applying this methodology will yield a set of messages and relations, SDRs,
connecting them, that is a graph which we call grid. We will show how such a
grid can be considered as the starting point of a Natural Language Generation
System. The methodology is evaluated in two case-studies, one for linearly
evolving events (descriptions of football matches) and another one for
non-linearly evolving events (terrorist incidents involving hostages). In both

Depth-dependent ordering, two-length-scale phenomena and crossover behavior in a crystal featuring a skin-layer with defects
Structural defects in a crystal are responsible for the "two length-scale"
behavior, in which a sharp central peak is superimposed over a broad peak in
critical diffuse X-ray scattering. We have previously measured the scaling
behavior of the central peak by scattering from a near-surface region of a V2H
crystal, which has a first-order transition in the bulk. As the temperature is
lowered toward the critical temperature, a crossover in critical behavior is
seen, with the temperature range nearest to the critical point being
characterized by mean field exponents. Near the transition, a small two-phase
coexistence region is observed. The values of transition and crossover
temperatures decay with depth. An explanation of these experimental results is
here proposed by means of a theory in which edge dislocations in the
near-surface region occur in walls oriented in the two directions normal to the
surface. The strain caused by the dislocation lines causes the ordering in the
crystal to occur as growth of roughly cylindrically shaped regions. After the
regions have reached a certain size, the crossover in the critical behavior
occurs, and mean field behavior prevails. At a still lower temperature, the
rest of the material between the cylindrical regions orders via a weak

Dynamics of open quantum systems
The coupling between the states of a system and the continuum into which it
is embedded, induces correlations that are especially large in the short time
scale. These correlations cannot be calculated by using a statistical or
perturbational approach. They are, however, involved in an approach describing
structure and reaction aspects in a unified manner. Such a model is the SMEC
(shell model embedded in the continuum). Some characteristic results obtained
from SMEC as well as some aspects of the correlations induced by the coupling

Multi-round trust game quantifies inter-individual differences in social exchange from adolescence to adulthood
Investing in strangers in a socio-economic exchange is risky, as we may be uncertain whether they will reciprocate. Nevertheless, the potential rewards for cooperating can be great. Here, we used a cross sectional sample (n = 784) to study how the challenges of cooperation versus defection are negotiated across an important period of the lifespan: from adolescence to young adulthood (ages 14 to 25). We quantified social behaviour using a multi round investor-trustee task, phenotyping individuals using a validated model whose parameters characterise patterns of real exchange and constitute latent social characteristics. We found highly significant differences in investment behaviour according to age, sex, socio-economic status and IQ. Consistent with the literature, we showed an overall trend towards higher trust from adolescence to young adulthood but, in a novel finding, we characterized key cognitive mechanisms explaining this, especially regarding socio-economic risk aversion. Males showed lower risk-aversion, associated with greater investments. We also found that inequality aversion was higher in females and, in a novel relation, that socio-economic deprivation was associated with more risk averse play
Strangeness dynamics and transverse pressure in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions
We investigate hadron production as well as transverse hadron spectra from
proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 GeV
to 21.3 TeV within two independent transport approaches (HSD and UrQMD)
that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The
comparison to experimental data on transverse mass spectra from , and
C+C (or Si+Si) reactions shows the reliability of the transport models for
light systems. For central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies
above 5 AGeV, furthermore, the measured transverse mass
spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the default
calculations. We investigate various scenarios to explore their potential
effects on the spectra. In particular the initial state Cronin effect
is found to play a substantial role at top SPS and RHIC energies. However, the
maximum in the ratio at 20 to 30 AGeV is missed by ~40% and
the approximately constant slope of the spectra at SPS energies is not
reproduced either. Our systematic analysis suggests that the additional
pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical
potential and temperature - should be generated by strong
interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb)
