    Importance of activity data for improving the residential wood combustion emission inventory at regional level

    The contribution of residential wood combustion (RWC) to emission inventory at local level was estimated using a bottomeup approach for the Lombardy Region of North Italy. A survey, based on the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) method, has been undertaken through 18,000 interviews. The interviews had the objective to characterize the RWC use in this region, in term of both total and municipal wood consumption. Details on the type of appliances used in RWC were also gathered. The results of the survey were then statistically analyzed in order to allow an estimate of RWC with high spatial resolution (i.e., at municipal level) in relation to the size and altitude of the territory. The work provides new evidence of the importance of wood combustion as a key source for PM and NMVOC emissions at local level, and thus highlights the importance of technological improvements and new policies aimed at emission reduction in this sector. Considering the great differences in average PM emission factors between low efficiency appliances (fireplaces, old stoves) and high efficiency ones (new stoves, pellet burners), this work emphasizes the importance of obtaining more detailed information on the types of wood appliances used for arriving at a reliable PM emission inventory for RWC

    Search for radio halos in starburst galaxies

    Starburst galaxies are undergoing intense episodes of star formation. In these galaxies, gas is ejected into the surrounding environment through winds created by the effect of hot stars and supernova explosions. When interacting with the intergalactic medium, these winds can produce strong shocks capable of accelerating cosmic rays. The radiation from these cosmic rays mainly occurs in radio and gamma rays. The radio halo can be characterized using the scale height. We searched for the presence of radio halos in a sample of edge-on starburst galaxies gathered from the MeerKAT 1.28 GHz Atlas of Southern Sources in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. We selected a sample of 25 edge-on galaxies from the original sample and modeled their disk and halo contributions. We have detected and characterized 11 radio halos, seven of which are reported here for the first time. We found that the halo scale heights increase linearly with the radio diameters and this relation does not depend on the star formation rate. All galaxies in our sample follow the radio-infrared relation with a q parameter value of 2.5±0.12.5\pm0.1. The dependence of the halo luminosity on the star formation rate and the infrared luminosity supports the hypothesis that the radio halos are the result of synchrotron radiation produced by relativistic electrons and points toward the fact that the star formation activity plays a crucial role in halo creation. The average scale height of 1 kpc implies a dynamical range of 4 Myr, several orders of magnitude greater than the synchrotron losses for electrons of 10 TeV. This suggests that some process must exist to reaccelerate cosmic rays in the halo if gamma-ray emission of a leptonic origin is detected from the halo. According to the relation between the radio and gamma-ray luminosities, we found that NGC 4666 is a potential gamma-ray source for future observations.Comment: 21 pages, 5 tables, 8 figures.     The UK Ministry of Defence Project Orientated Environmental Management System (POEMS)

    The Project Orientated Environmental Management System (POEMS) is the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) bespoke environmental management system for the acquisition and use of equipment. The full implementation of a site-specific environmental management system is challenging for the MoD because there are many permanent MoD sites with transient populations, frequently changing site activities and diverse types of equipment. Nevertheless, MoD policy requires that all sites are covered by an environmental management system. POEMS is based on international standards ISO14001 and ISO14040, which focus on environmental management systems and life cycle assessment, respectively. The primary aim of POEMS is to identify and manage any environmental aspects (causes) and impacts (effects) by scrutinising MoD equipment and activities during acquisition, operation and disposal. This is achieved by drawing up a priority list of activities associated with the equipment based on anticipated environmental impact scores, resulting in an environmental management plan that spans the life cycle of the equipment and any corresponding activities. This article describes the POEMS procedure for both experts and non-experts, and demonstrates the implementation of POEMS using a 105-mm artillery round as a theoretical case study. The results anticipated at each stage of the POEMS procedure are discussed in detail, and the documentation necessary to verify the correct application of POEMS is demonstrated

    Hyperplastic and hypertrophic growth of lateral muscle in blackspot seabream Pagellus bogaraveo from hatching to juvenile

    To understand better the growth mechanisms in the economically important fish Pagellus bogaraveo, in terms of muscle fibre hyperplasia v. hypertrophy, the lateral muscle of this fish was studied morphometrically from hatching to juvenile comparing rostral and caudal locations. Fish were sampled at 0, 5, 23, 40, 70, 100, 140 and 180 days. Fibre types were first identified by succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and immunostaining with a polyclonal antibody against fish slow myosin (4-96). Morphometric variables were then measured in transverse body sections, at both post-opercular and post-anal locations, to estimate the following variables: total muscle area [A (muscle)], total fibre number [N (fibres)], fibre number per unit area of muscle [N-A (fibres, muscle)] and cross-sectional fibre area [a (fibres)] of the two main muscle fibre types (white and red). Overall, growth throughout the various stages resulted from increases both in the number and in the size of muscle fibres, paralleled by an expansion of the [A (muscle)]. Nonetheless, that increase was not significant between 0-5 days on one hand and 100-140 days, on the other hand. On the contrary, the [N-A (fibres, muscle)] declined as the body length increased. Analysis of the muscle growth kinetics suggested that, within the important time frame studied, hyperplasia gave the main relative contribution to the increase of white muscle [A (white muscle)], whereas red muscle [A (red muscle)] mainly grew by hypertrophy, with both phenomena occurring at a faster pace posteriorly in the body. Finally, when comparing rostral and caudal locations, a greater [N (fibres)] and [A (muscle)] of the posterior white and red fibres were the consistent features. It was also observed that the proportion of the cross-sectional area of the myotomal muscle comprised of white muscle was greater in the anterior part of the fish

    Data Collection for Traffic and Drivers’ Behaviour Studies: A Large-scale Survey

    AbstractStudies of driving behaviour are of great help for different tasks in transportation engineering. These include data collection both for statistical analysis and for identification of driving models and estimation of modelling parameters (calibration). The data and models may be applied to different areas: i) road safety analysis; ii) microscopic models for traffic simulation, forecast and control; iii) control logics aimed at ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems). In this paper we present a large survey based on the naturalistic (on-the-road) observation of driving behaviour with a view to obtaining microscopic data for single vehicles on long road segments and for long time periods. Data are collected by means of an instrumented vehicle (IV), equipped with GPS, radar, cameras and other sensors. The behaviour of more than 100 drivers was observed by using the IV in active mode, that is by observing the kinematics imposed on the vehicle by the driver, as well as the kinematics with respect to neighbouring vehicles. Sensors were also mounted backwards on the IV, allowing the behaviour of the driver behind to be observed in passive mode. As the vehicle behind changes, the next is observed and within a short period of time the behaviour of several drivers can be examined, without the observed driver being aware. The paper presents the experiment by describing the road context, aims and experimental procedure. Statistics and initial insights are also presented based on the large amount of data collected (more than 8000km of observed trajectories and 120hours of driving in active mode). As an example of how to use the data directly, apart from calibration of driving behaviour models, indexes based on aggregate measures of safety are computed, presented and discussed
