    Unhappiness, health and cognitive ability in old age

    Background To test whether scores on depression inventories on entry to a longitudinal study predict mental ability over the next 4–16 years. Method Associations between scores on the Beck Depression Inventory and on tests of intelligence, vocabulary and memory were analysed in 5070 volunteers aged 49–93 years after differences in prescribed drug consumption, death and drop-out, sex, socio-economic advantage and recruitment cohort effects had also been considered. Results On all cognitive tasks Beck scores on entry, even in the range 0–7 indicating differences in above average contentment, affected overall levels of cognitive performance but not rates of age-related cognitive decline suggesting effects of differences in life satisfaction rather than in depression. Conclusions A new finding is that, in old age, increments in life satisfaction are associated with better cognitive performance. Implications for interpreting associations between depression inventory scores and cognitive performance in elderly samples are discussed

    Role of insulin and IGF1 receptors in proliferation of cultured renal proximal tubule cells

    We have used a murine proximal tubule cell line (MCT cells) to determine the presence and binding characteristics of insulin and IGF1 receptors and to correlate these parameters with the concentration-response relationships for ligand-induced cellular proliferation. Separate insulin and IGF1 receptors were identified by equilibrium binding assays. Half-maximal displacement of either peptide occurred at 3-10 nM; crossover binding to the alternate receptor occurred with a 10- to 100-fold lower affinity. Peptide effects on cellular proliferation were determined by measuring [3H]thymidine incorporation. Both insulin and IGF1 stimulate thymidine incorporation in a dose-dependent manner with similar increases above the basal level. The estimated half-maximal stimulation (EC50) occurred at 4 nM for IGF1 and 8 nM for insulin. A comparison of the receptor binding affinities with the dose-response relationships for [3H]thymidine incorporation reveals that each growth factor appears to be exerting its effect via binding to its own receptor. Therefore, in this cell line, physiologic concentrations of either insulin or IGF1 can modulate cellular growth. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of a mitogenic effect which may be modulated by ligand binding to the insulin receptor in proximal tubule epithelia

    Reproductive Health of Bass in the Potomac, USA, Drainage: Part 1. Exploring the Effects of Proximity to Wastewater Treatment Plant Discharge

    Intersex (specifically, testicular oocytes) has been observed in male smallmouth bass (SMB; Micropterus dolomieu) and other centrarchids in the South Branch of the Potomac River, USA, and forks of the Shenandoah River, USA, during the past five years. This condition often is associated with exposure to estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals in some fish species, but such chemicals and their sources have yet to be identified in the Potomac. In an attempt to better understand the plausible causes of this condition, we investigated the reproductive health of bass sampled up- and downstream of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent point sources on the Potomac River in Maryland, USA. Smallmouth bass were sampled from the Conococheague Creek and the Monocacy River, and largemouth bass (LMB; Micropterus salmoides) were collected near the Blue Plains WWTP on the mainstem of the Potomac River. Chemical analyses of compounds captured in passive samplers at these locations also were conducted. A high prevalence of intersex (82–100%) was identified in male SMB at all sites regardless of collection area. A lower prevalence of intersex (23%) was identified in male LMB collected at the Blue Plains site. When up- and downstream fish were compared, significant differences were noted only in fish from the Conococheague. Differences included condition factor, gonadosomatic index, plasma vitellogenin concentration, and estrogen to testosterone ratio. In general, chemicals associated with wastewater effluent, storm-water runoff, and agriculture were more prevalent at the downstream sampling sites. An exception was atrazine and its associated metabolites, which were present in greater concentrations at the upstream sites. It appears that proximity to effluent from WWTPs may influence the reproductive health of bass in the Potomac watershed, but inputs from other sources likely contribute to the widespread, high incidence of testicular oocytes

    Exchange bias in La0.7Sr0.3CrO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/La0.7Sr0.3CrO3 heterostructures

    In the recent past, heterostructures of magnetic oxide thin films have attracted a great deal of research excitement due to very interesting physical properties such as antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling, tunable exchange-bias, interfacial driven magnetic properties and high mobility electron gas across the interfaces. In this work, we report on the comprehensive magnetic properties observed from the heterostructures of (2 unit cells) La0.7Sr0.3CrO3/(8 unit cells) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/(2 unit cells) La0.7Sr0.3CrO3, which are epitaxially deposited on SrTiO3 substrate by plasma-assisted oxide molecular beam epitaxy. Using SQUID magnetometer, the magnetic properties are studied when the magnetic field was applied both in plane and out of plane. The Curie temperature of this structure is found to be at 290 K. Most significantly, at 2 K, we observed a complete up/down shift (along magnetization axis) of hysteresis loop when the sample was cooled under a magnetic field of ± 5000 Oe in the in-plane configuration. We believe that the strong antiferromagnetic (super) exchange coupling of Mn-Cr across the two interfaces is responsible for the observed exchange bias. We will present and discuss our in-detailed experimental findings collected on this heterostructure as a function of temperature and magnetic field

    Drinking behaviour and alcohol-related harm amongst older adults: analysis of existing UK datasets.

    Older adults experience age-related physiological changes that increase sensitivity and decrease tolerance to alcohol and there are a number of age-related harms such as falls, social isolation and elder abuse, which are compounded by alcohol misuse. Despite this unique vulnerability and the fact that the number of older adults is increasing, the literature on drinking behaviour and alcohol-related harm in older adults is sparse. This article describes a secondary analysis of UK data to address this knowledge gap

    Realising the Olympic dream: vision, support and challenge

    The sporting arena is replete with examples and anecdotes of great inspirational coaches that have led teams to success, often in the face of adversity and against seemingly better opponents. The role of the coach in developing and motivating athletes has also been the focus of much research in sport psychology (e.g., Challaduria 1990; Smith & Smoll, 2007). Despite the ease with which one readily accepts that coaches can be inspirational, the sport coaching literature is somewhat devoid of research on inspirational coaches and the effects of such coaches on athletic success. The purpose of the current paper is to theoretically delineate the inspirational effects of coaches in sport. Given the relative paucity of inspiration-related research in sport we draw upon contemporary theories of leadership from organisational and military psychology (e.g., transformational and charismatic leadership theories). We propose a sport-specific model of leadership that centres around the vision, support, and challenge meta-cognitive model developed by Arthur and Hardy in military contexts. The model posits that �great� coaches inspire their athletes by: (a) creating an inspirational vision of the future; (b) providing the necessary support to achieve the vision; and (c) providing the challenge to achieve the vision. The underlying proposition is that the vision provides meaning and direction for followers� effort. That is, the vision serves as the beacon around which all the sweat, pain and sacrifice involved in achieving success at the highest level in sport is directed. At the heart of this model is the notion that athletes can achieve their dreams provided they are inspired to do so; this is because all other things being equal the person who is motivated to practice longer and train harder will ultimately be the best.
