Spectrophotometric and ellipsometric measurements on coated flat glass Report of the International Commission on Glass Technical Committee 19 "Physical Methods for Studying Glass Surfaces"
The deposition technology of thin films on flat glass is used for optimizing the behaviour of glazings as regards natural daylighting, solar control and thermal insulation. The characterization of the modified glass surface is of great importance to predict this behaviour.
In 1986 the International Commission on Glass (ICG) decided to commit the task of glass surface characterization to its Technical Committee TC 19. Three coated samples were circulated among the members of TC 19 and the coatings were characterized with different techniques.

Transient myocardial thickening: a retrospective analysis on etiological, clinical, laboratory, therapeutic, and outcome findings in 27 cats
Introduction/objective: Transient myocardial thickening (TMT) in cats is a poorly characterized clinical entity. Therefore, this study aimed to provide descriptions of additional cats diagnosed with this clinical phenomenon.Animals, materials, and methods: For this multicenter observational retrospective study, cats diagnosed with TMT were searched in three medical databases. TMT was defined for cats with at least two echocardiograms showing an increased end diastolic left ventricular wall thickness (LVWTd; i.e.>= 6 mm) at presentation and subsequent echocardiographic normalization (i.e. LVWTd <5.5 mm). Signalment, history, clinical, laboratory, therapeutic, and outcome data were retrieved. Results: 27 cats were included. The median age was 3 years. In 9/27 cats, an antecedent event was documented. At admission, 27/27 cats had evidence of myocardial injury (median value of cardiac troponin I 5.5 ng/mL), 25/27 cats had congestive heart failure, 13/27 cats had hypothermia, 8/27 cats had systemic hypotension, 7/27 cats had bradycardia, and 7/27 cats had electrocardiographic evidence of an arrhythmia. The median LVWTd was 6.4 mm. A potential cause of myocardial injury was identified in 14/27 cats. The median time from diagnosi

Leakage Risk Assessment for a Potential CO2 Storage Project in Saskatchewan, Canada
A CO{sub 2} sequestration project is being considered to (1) capture CO{sub 2} emissions from the Consumers Cooperative Refineries Limited at Regina, Saskatchewan and (2) geologically sequester the captured CO{sub 2} locally in a deep saline aquifer. This project is a collaboration of several industrial and governmental organizations, including the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), SaskEnvironment Go Green Fund, SaskPower, CCRL, Schlumberger Carbon Services, and Enbridge. The project objective is to sequester 600 tonnes CO{sub 2}/day. Injection is planned to start in 2012 or 2013 for a period of 25 years for a total storage of approximately 5.5 million tonnes CO{sub 2}. This report presents an assessment of the leakage risk of the proposed project using a methodology known as the Certification Framework (CF). The CF is used for evaluating CO{sub 2} leakage risk associated with geologic carbon sequestration (GCS), as well as brine leakage risk owing to displacement and pressurization of brine by the injected CO{sub 2}. We follow the CF methodology by defining the entities (so-called Compartments) that could be impacted by CO{sub 2} leakage, the CO{sub 2} storage region, the potential for leakage along well and fault pathways, and the consequences of such leakage. An understanding of the likelihood and consequences of leakage forms the basis for understanding CO{sub 2} leakage risk, and forms the basis for recommendations of additional data collection and analysis to increase confidence in the risk assessment
Irradiation-induced Ag nanocluster nucleation in silicate glasses: analogy with photography
The synthesis of Ag nanoclusters in sodalime silicate glasses and silica was
studied by optical absorption (OA) and electron spin resonance (ESR)
experiments under both low (gamma-ray) and high (MeV ion) deposited energy
density irradiation conditions. Both types of irradiation create electrons and
holes whose density and thermal evolution - notably via their interaction with
defects - are shown to determine the clustering and growth rates of Ag
nanocrystals. We thus establish the influence of redox interactions of defects
and silver (poly)ions. The mechanisms are similar to the latent image formation
in photography: irradiation-induced photoelectrons are trapped within the glass
matrix, notably on dissolved noble metal ions and defects, which are thus
neutralized (reverse oxidation reactions are also shown to exist). Annealing
promotes metal atom diffusion, which in turn leads to cluster nuclei formation.
The cluster density depends not only on the irradiation fluence, but also - and
primarily - on the density of deposited energy and the redox properties of the
glass. Ion irradiation (i.e., large deposited energy density) is far more
effective in cluster formation, despite its lower neutralization efficiency
(from Ag+ to Ag0) as compared to gamma photon irradiation.Comment: 48 pages, 18 figures, revised version publ. in Phys. Rev. B, pdf fil
Soft capacitor fibers using conductive polymers for electronic textiles
A novel, highly flexible, conductive polymer-based fiber with high electric
capacitance is reported. In its crossection the fiber features a periodic
sequence of hundreds of conductive and isolating plastic layers positioned
around metallic electrodes. The fiber is fabricated using fiber drawing method,
where a multi-material macroscopic preform is drawn into a sub-millimeter
capacitor fiber in a single fabrication step. Several kilometres of fibers can
be obtained from a single preform with fiber diameters ranging between 500um
-1000um. A typical measured capacitance of our fibers is 60-100 nF/m and it is
independent of the fiber diameter. For comparison, a coaxial cable of the
comparable dimensions would have only ~0.06nF/m capacitance. Analysis of the
fiber frequency response shows that in its simplest interrogation mode the
capacitor fiber has a transverse resistance of 5 kOhm/L, which is inversely
proportional to the fiber length L and is independent of the fiber diameter.
Softness of the fiber materials, absence of liquid electrolyte in the fiber
structure, ease of scalability to large production volumes, and high
capacitance of our fibers make them interesting for various smart textile
applications ranging from distributed sensing to energy storage
Relationship between programmed cell death and the cell cycle in the tobacco BY-2 cell line
Ethylene is an established plant growth regulator linked with programmed cell death (PCD). To investigate the relationship between the cell cycle and PCD, ethylene was used to see if it induced mortality in a cell cycle specific manner. Tobacco BY-2 cultures synchronized with aphidicolin were treated with ethylene. Cell cycle progression and mortality, measured at hourly intervals, showed distinct peaks of mortality at the G2/M boundary and S-phase. In conjunction with this, DNA fragmentation increased at G2/M. Furthermore, ethylene caused a significant reduction in cell size of the cycling population. Simultaneous addition of silver nitrate with ethylene ameliorated ethylene-induced G2/M mortality, although a toxic effect of silver alone was evident. Due to the toxicity of silver, 1-MCP, an alternative chemical for blocking ethylene receptors was used. 1-MCP neither affected the BY-2 cell cycle nor mortality levels. In addition, 1-MCP ameliorated ethylene-induced G2/M mortality. To balance the chemical approaches to blocking ethylene receptors, tobacco BY-2 cells were transformed with Atetrl that encodes a dominant insensitive form of the Arabidopsis ETR1 ethylene receptor. Atetrl expression caused a massive perturbation to the tobacco BY-2 cell cycle, especially in S-phase, and resulted in high levels of mortality throughout the cell cycle. Ethylene treatment caused a doubling of G2 duration but did not affect temporal distribution of mortality. However, ethylene treatment generated a peak of mortality in S-phase. These results suggest that ethylene induces PCD at G2/M through the known ethylene signaling pathway. Furthermore, it confirms that 1-MCP and Atetrl result in ethylene insensitivity. To examine the G2/M transition, Spcdc25, a positive regulator of G2/M in fission yeast was transformed into the tobacco BY-2 cell line. This resulted in premature entry into mitosis, a shortened cell cycle, and reduced cell size. This was similar to Spcdc25 over-expression in fission yeast and suggests the presence of a CDC25-like phosphatase in plants.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
Environmental variables, habitat discontinuity and life history shaping the genetic structure of Pomatoschistus marmoratus
Coastal lagoons are semi-isolated ecosystems
exposed to wide fluctuations of environmental conditions
and showing habitat fragmentation. These features may
play an important role in separating species into different
populations, even at small spatial scales. In this study, we
evaluate the concordance between mitochondrial (previous
published data) and nuclear data analyzing the genetic
variability of Pomatoschistus marmoratus in five localities,
inside and outside the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (SE
Spain) using eight microsatellites. High genetic diversity
and similar levels of allele richness were observed across
all loci and localities, although significant genic and
genotypic differentiation was found between populations
inside and outside the lagoon. In contrast to the FST values
obtained from previous mitochondrial DNA analyses
(control region), the microsatellite data exhibited significant
differentiation among samples inside the Mar Menor
and between lagoonal and marine samples. This pattern
was corroborated using Cavalli-Sforza genetic distances.
The habitat fragmentation inside the coastal lagoon and
among lagoon and marine localities could be acting as a
barrier to gene flow and contributing to the observed
genetic structure. Our results from generalized additive
models point a significant link between extreme lagoonal
environmental conditions (mainly maximum salinity) and
P. marmoratus genetic composition. Thereby, these environmental
features could be also acting on genetic structure
of coastal lagoon populations of P. marmoratus favoring
their genetic divergence. The mating strategy of P. marmoratus
could be also influencing our results obtained from
mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Therefore, a special
consideration must be done in the selection of the DNA
markers depending on the reproductive strategy of the
species
Microstructure and thermal stability of Fe, Ti and Ag implanted Yttria-stabilized zirconia
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was implanted with 15 keV Fe or Ti ions up to a dose of 8Ă1016 at cmâ2. The resulting âdopantâ concentrations exceeded the concentrations corresponding to the equilibrium solid solubility of Fe2O3 or TiO2 in YSZ. During oxidation in air at 400° C, the Fe and Ti concentration in the outermost surface layer increased even further until a surface layer was formed of mainly Fe2O3 and TiO2, as shown by XPS and ISS measurements. From the time dependence of the Fe and Ti depth profiles during anneal treatments, diffusion coefficients were calculated. From those values it was estimated that the maximum temperature at which the Fe- and Ti-implanted layers can be operated without changes in the dopant concentration profiles was 700 and 800° C, respectively. The high-dose implanted layer was completely amorphous even after annealing up to 1100° C, as shown by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Preliminary measurements on 50 keV Ag implanted YSZ indicate that in this case the amorphous layer recrystallizes into fine grained cubic YSZ at a temperature of about 1000° C. The average grain diameter was estimated at 20 nm, whereas the original grain size of YSZ before implantation was 400 nm. This result implies that the grain size in the surface of a ceramic material can be decreased by ion beam amorphisation and subsequent recrystallisation at elevated temperatures
SILVER-SENSITIZED ERBIUM-DOPED ION-EXCHANGED SOL-GEL WAVEGUIDES
Ag- and Er-doped glass films have been synthesized with a combined solâgel and ion-exchange route. The introduction of silver as erbium sensitizer in the film was obtained by ion exchanging Er-doped SiO2âAl2O3âNa2O solâgel films. The films were subsequently annealed under controlled atmosphere to induce the migration and aggregation of the metal ions. Films showed different Er3+ photoluminescence behaviors depending on silver concentration and aggregation state. The interaction between erbium ions and Ag centers has been investigated and enhancement of the excitation cross section due to the silver sensitizing effect has been demonstrated. The developed synthesis also allowed the realization of erbiumdoped channel waveguides by a selective NaâAg ion-exchange process
