Lombalgie chronique, COTOREP et reclassement professionnel en Moselle
Objectifs : DĂ©crire les caractĂ©ristiques, la prise en charge, les rĂ©sultats et le coĂ»t d\u27un reclassement professionnel concernant les assurĂ©s mosellans lombalgiques chroniques bĂ©nĂ©ficiant dâun accord de la Commission technique d\u27orientation et de reclassement professionnel (COTOREP). MĂ©thodes : Etude descriptive menĂ©e entre aoĂ»t 2000 et mars 2001 dans le cadre d\u27un partenariat avec la COTOREP de Moselle intĂ©grant 48 lombalgiques chroniques pour lesquels la COTOREP a donnĂ© en 1995 un accord de prĂ©-orientation ou de reclassement professionnels. RĂ©sultats : Le lombalgique pris en charge Ă©tait un homme jeune, de faible niveau scolaire et professionnel, en rupture avec le milieu du travail et souffrant d\u27une pathologie lombaire invalidante. Sur 32 formations suivies, 24 candidats ont rĂ©ussi leur examen mais seuls dix diplĂŽmĂ©s ont trouvĂ© un emploi. Huit diplĂŽmĂ©s ont trouvĂ© un emploi conforme Ă la formation apprise. Le taux de reprise du travail Ă©tait semblable pour les diplĂŽmĂ©s (10/24) et pour les autres lombalgiques (11/24). Le coĂ»t global pour l\u27assurance maladie variait de 25 000 en externat Ă 39 000 en internat. Conclusion : Devant la faible valeur ajoutĂ©e du reclassement professionnel que nous avons constatĂ©e, il paraĂźt souhaitable de maintenir le lombalgique chronique dans son emploi en restaurant son rachis, en amĂ©nageant son poste de travail et, surtout, en gĂ©rant ses peurs et croyances liĂ©es au couple lombalgietravail
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in transport through single molecule transistors
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is shown to result in a canting of
spins in a single molecule transistor. We predict non-linear transport
signatures of this effect induced by spin-orbit coupling for the generic case
of a molecular dimer. The conductance is calculated using a master equation and
is found to exhibit a non-trivial dependence on the magnitude and direction of
an external magnetic field. We show how three-terminal transport measurements
allow for a determination of the coupling-vector characterizing the
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In particular, we show how its orientation,
defining the intramolecular spin chirality, can be probed with ferromagnetic
electrodes
inbreedR: An R package for the analysis of inbreeding based on genetic markers
1. Heterozygosity fitness correlations (HFCs) have been used extensively to explore the impact of inbreeding on individual fitness. Initially, most studies used small panels of microsatellites, but more recently with the advent of next generation sequencing, large SNP datasets are becoming increasingly available and these provide greater power and precision to quantify the impact of inbreeding on fitness. 2. Despite the popularity of HFC studies, effect sizes tend to be rather small. One reason for this may be a low variation in inbreeding level across individuals. Using genetic markers, it is possible to measure variance in inbreeding through the strength of correlation in heterozygosity across marker loci, termed identity disequilibrium (ID). 3. ID can be quantified using the measure g2 which is also a central parameter in HFC theory that can be used within a wider framework to estimate the direct impact of inbreeding on both marker heterozygosity and fitness. However, no software exists to calculate g2 for large SNP datasets nor to implement this framework. 4. inbreedR is an R package that provides functions to calculate g2 based on microsatellite and SNP markers with associated p-values and confidence intervals. Within the framework of HFC theory, inbreedR also estimates the impact of inbreeding on marker heterozygosity and fitness. Moreover, we implemented easy-to-use simulations to explore the precision and magnitude of estimates based on different numbers of genetic markers. We hope this package will facilitate good practice in the analysis of HFCs and help to deepen our understanding of inbreeding effects in natural populations
Preliminary measurements of lumbar spine kinematics and stiffness
The purpose of the presented study was the experimental measurement of lumbar spine stiffness and its range of motion. The dependence of torsion moment of lumbar spine segment on deflection of flexion, extension and torsion was observed during experiments. Stiffness of spine segment was determined from measured data. Human lumbar spine was used for verification of the experimental technique. The sample consisted of one lumbar vertebrae composed by five vertebral bodies and four intervertebral discs. All muscles were removed, however all ligaments were preserved. Experiments were ca rried out on the test system MTS 858.2 MiniBionix, where loading by axial force and torsion moment is possible at the same time. Special Modular Bionix Spine Test Fixator, attached to the test system was used for the measurements. Loading was controlled kinematically (gradual turning) by keeping the axial force equal zero. Measurement was timedependent. The results of these experiments are going to be used as input data for creating a model of artificial lumbar spine and new type of artificial disc replacement
Evaluation of Photodiode and Thermopile Pyranometers for Photovoltaic Applications
Accurately determining PV module performance in the field requires measurement of solar irradiance reaching the PV panel at a high level of accuracy and known uncertainty. Silicon detectors used in various solar energy measuring instruments including reference cells are potentially an attractive choice for multiple reasons that include faster responsivity than thermopile detectors, cheaper cost and lower maintenance. The main drawback though is the fact that the silicon detectors are only spectrally responsive in a narrow part of the solar spectrum. Therefore, to determine broadband solar irradiance a calibration factor that converts the narrowband response to broadband is required. Normally this calibration factor is a single number determined under standard conditions but then used for various scenarios including varying air-mass, panel orientation and atmospheric conditions. This would not have been an issue if all wavelengths that form the broadband spectrum responded uniformly to atmospheric constituents. Unfortunately the scattering and absorption signature varies widely across wavelengths and the calibration factor computed under certain test conditions is not appropriate for other conditions. This paper lays out the issues that will arise from the use of silicon detectors for PV performance measurement in the field. We also present a comparison of simultaneous spectral and broadband measurements from silicon and thermopile detectors and estimated measurement errors when using silicon devices for both array performance and resource assessment
Antimatter and Matter Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN (The NEWMASS Experiment NA52)
Besides the dedicated search for strangelets NA52 measures light
(anti)particle and (anti)nuclei production over a wide range of rapidity.
Compared to previous runs the statistics has been increased in the 1998 run by
more than one order of magnitude for negatively charged objects at different
spectrometer rigidities. Together with previous data taking at a rigidity of
-20 GeV/c we obtained 10^6 antiprotons 10^3 antideuterons and two antihelium3
without centrality requirements. We measured nuclei and antinuclei
(p,d,antiprotons, antideuterons) near midrapidity covering an impact parameter
range of b=2-12 fm. Our results strongly indicate that nuclei and antinuclei
are mainly produced via the coalescence mechanism. However the centrality
dependence of the antibaryon to baryon ratios show that antibaryons are
diminished due to annihilation and breakup reactions in the hadron dense
environment. The volume of the particle source extracted from coalescence
models agrees with results from pion interferometry for an expanding source.
The chemical and thermal freeze-out of nuclei and antinuclei appear to coincide

Reasons for cessation of clean intermittent catheterization after spinal cord injury: Results from the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group spinal cord injury registry
IntroductionClean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is recommended for bladder management after spinal cord injury (SCI) since it has the lowest complication rate. However, transitions from CIC to other less optimal strategies, such as indwelling catheters (IDCs) are common. In individuals with SCI who stopped CIC, we sought to determine how individual characteristics affect the bladderârelated quality of life (QoL) and the reasons for CIC cessation.MethodsThe Neurogenic Bladder Research Group registry is an observational study, evaluating neurogenic bladderârelated QoL after SCI. From 1479 participants, those using IDC or urinary conduit were asked if they had ever performed CIC, for how long, and why they stopped CIC. Multivariable regression, among participants discontinuing CIC, established associations between demographics, injury characteristics, and SCI complications with bladderârelated QoL.ResultsThere were 176 participants who had discontinued CIC; 66 (38%) were paraplegic and 110 (63%) were male. The most common reasons for CIC cessation among all participants were inconvenience, urinary leakage, and too many urine infections. Paraplegic participants who discontinued CIC had higher mean age, better fine motor scores, and lower educational attainment and employment. Multivariable regression revealed years since SCI was associated with worse bladder symptoms (neurogenic bladder symptom score), â„4 urinary tract infections (UTIs) in a year was associated with worse satisfaction and feelings about bladder symptoms (SCIâQoL difficulties), while tetraplegia was associated better satisfaction and feelings about bladder symptoms (SCIâQoL difficulties).ConclusionsTetraplegics who have discontinued CIC have an improved QoL compared with paraplegics. Adapted hydropower-driven water supply system: assessment of an underground application in an Indonesian karst area
Populated karst landscapes can be found all over the world, although their natural boundary conditions mostly lead to distinct challenges regarding a sustainable water supply. Especially in developing and emerging countries, this situation aggravates since appropriate technologies and water management concepts are rarely available. Against this background, the interdisciplinary, German-Indonesian joint project ââIntegrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Indonesiaââ, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), focused on the development and exemplary implementation of adapted techniques to remedy the partly severe water scarcity in the region Gunung Sewu. This karst area, widely known as ââJavaâs poorhouseââ, is located on the southern coast of Java Island and distinctly suffers from the mentioned constraints. Under the aegis of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the conceptual and technical achievements of the ââIWRM Indonesiaââ joint research project are characterized by a high potential for multiplication not only for karst areas but also for nonkarst regions. One of the projectâs major accomplishments is the erection of an innovative hydropower-driven water supply facility located in a karst cave 100 m below ground and continuously supplying tens of thousands of people with fresh water. Referring to the plantâs innovative character and the demanding conditions on-site, the implementation was a highly iterative process leading to todayâs autonomous operation by an Indonesian public authority. Based on the experiences gained during design, construction, operation and monitoring phase, this paper introduces an implementation approach for adapted technologies as well as a comprising technical and economical assessment of the plantâs operation
