    Collaborative communities: The relationship between parental-involvement and school culture

    During this time when schools are publicly ranked according to their students’ achievement on standardized exams, when many of the lower-ranked schools are concentrated in urban, low-income, and high-minority populated communities, and when those same schools receive the least amount of state-funding per-pupil, this study is born from the inspiration to further advocate the development of a school improvement strategy that can have a beneficial impact on a school’s culture and a small demand on that school’s budget. This study seeks to learn of the relationship between parental involvement and school culture. It evolves from personal inspiration to professional legitimacy by building upon Dr. James Comer’s School Development Program (SDP). The SDP, also known as the Comer Process, provides structure and strategies for schools to engage and involve the parents and communities of the families they serve. The Comer Process has proven successful in developing positive school culture and raising student achievement. Plymouth Educational Center (PEC) serves as the setting for this researcher’s exploration of the Comer Process. This study begins with a broad historical overview of public education in Detroit since the 1960s. Then the research lens narrows onto decentralization, charter schools, and eventually PEC. This study seeks to contribute to and extend previous research by exploring advocating that the more parents and communities are involved with and in a school, the more likely it is that that school’s culture, consisting of a positive and respectful climate, will have a constructive impact on student achievement

    Level sets of functions and symmetry sets of smooth surface sections

    We prove that the level sets of a real C^s function of two variables near a non-degenerate critical point are of class C^[s/2] and apply this to the study of planar sections of surfaces close to the singular section by the tangent plane at hyperbolic points or elliptic points, and in particular at umbilic points. We also analyse the cases coming from degenerate critical points, corresponding to elliptic cusps of Gauss on a surface, where the differentiability is now reduced to C^[s/4]. However in all our applications to symmetry sets of families of plane curves, we assume the C^infty smoothness.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, 6 grouped figures.     Multimorbidity patterns in people with HIV

    PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With the progressive aging of populations of people with HIV (PWH), multimorbidity is increasing. Multimorbidity patterns, that is groups of comorbidities that are likely to co-occur, may suggest shared causes or common risk factors. We review the literature regarding multimorbidity patterns identified with data-driven approaches and discuss the methodology and potential implications of the findings. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite the substantial heterogeneity in the methods used to identify multimorbidity patterns, patterns of mental health problems, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and musculoskeletal problems are consistently reported in the general population, with patterns of mental health problems, cardiovascular diseases or metabolic disorders commonly reported in PWH. In addition to these, patterns of lifestyle-related comorbidities, such as sexually transmitted diseases, substance use (alcohol, recreational drugs and tobacco smoking) or their complications, seem to occur among PWH. SUMMARY: Multimorbidity patterns could inform the development of appropriate guidelines for the prevention, monitoring and management of multiple comorbidities in PWH. They can also help to generate new hypotheses on the causes underlying previously known and unknown associations between comorbidities and facilitate the identification of risk factors and biomarkers for specific patterns

    How to Complete an Interactive Configuration Process?

    When configuring customizable software, it is useful to provide interactive tool-support that ensures that the configuration does not breach given constraints. But, when is a configuration complete and how can the tool help the user to complete it? We formalize this problem and relate it to concepts from non-monotonic reasoning well researched in Artificial Intelligence. The results are interesting for both practitioners and theoreticians. Practitioners will find a technique facilitating an interactive configuration process and experiments supporting feasibility of the approach.     The University of New Hampshire Engaged Scholars Academy: Instilling in Faculty Principles of Effective Partnership

    Over the last decade, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) has promoted mutually beneficial partnerships between faculty and community partners vis-à-vis the Engaged Scholars Academy (ESA), a faculty development program aimed at enhancing faculty understanding of the principles of partnership and engaged scholarship. This research seeks to determine whether and how the ESA has impacted faculty-community partnerships around engaged scholarship. Findings suggest that Engaged Scholar Academy participants – as compared to non-participants – have a deeper understanding of the principles of partnership, are more likely to feel their scholarship is enhanced, spend more time with partners, engage their partners throughout the process of inquiry, and focus more on sustaining partnership outcomes

    Millimeter polarisation of the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2: A follow-up study with CARMA

    In order to investigate the characteristics and influence of the magnetic field in evolved stars, we performed a follow-up investigation of our previous submillimeter analysis of the proto-planetary nebula (PPN) OH 231.8+4.2 (Sabin et al. 2014), this time at 1.3mm with the CARMA facility in polarisation mode for the purpose of a multi-scale analysis. OH 231.8+4.2 was observed at ~2.5" resolution and we detected polarised emission above the 3-sigma threshold (with a mean polarisation fraction of 3.5 %). The polarisation map indicates an overall organised magnetic field within the nebula. The main finding in this paper is the presence of a structure mostly compatible with an ordered toroidal component that is aligned with the PPN's dark lane. We also present some alternative magnetic field configuration to explain the structure observed. These data complete our previous SMA submillimeter data for a better investigation and understanding of the magnetic field structure in OH 231.8+4.2.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables.     Submillimeter polarisation and magnetic field properties in the envelopes of proto-planetary nebulae CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2

    We have carried out continuum and line polarisation observations of two Proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in its compact configuration. The frequency range of observations, 330-345 GHz, includes the CO(J=3-2) line emission. CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2 show quadrupolar and bipolar optical lobes, respectively, surrounded by a dusty envelope reminiscent of their AGB phase. We report a detection of dust continuum polarised emission in both PPNe above 4 sigma but no molecular line polarisation detection above a 3 sigma limit. OH 231.8+4.2 is slightly more polarised on average than CRL 618 with a mean fractional polarisation of 4.3 and 0.3 per cent, respectively. This agrees with the previous finding that silicate dust shows higher polarisation than carbonaceous dust. In both objects, an anti-correlation between the fractional polarisation and the intensity is observed. Neither PPNe show a well defined toroidal equatorial field, rather the field is generally well aligned and organised along the polar direction. This is clearly seen in CRL 618 while in the case of OH 231.8+4.2, the geometry indicates an X-shaped structure coinciding overall with a dipole/polar configuration. However in the later case, the presence of a fragmented and weak toroidal field should not be discarded. Finally, in both PPNe, we observed that the well organised magnetic field is parallel with the major axis of the 12CO outflow. This alignment could indicate the presence of a magnetic outflow launching mechanism. Based on our new high resolution data we propose two scenarios to explain the evolution of the magnetic field in evolved stars.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures and 1 table.
