Studies on cultured Schwann cells: the induction of myelin synthesis, and the control of their proliferation by a new growth factor
We have recently described the use of immunological methods to identify and purify rat Schwann cells. In dissociated cultures of neonatal sciatic nerve, all of the cells can be identified by antigenic criteria as either Schwann cells or fibroblasts. The fibroblasts may be removed by treatment with antiserum to the Thy-1 antigen and complement. The purified Schwann cells have been used to study the regulation of the expression of myelin components, and the stimulation of Schwann cell division by a soluble growth factor. Among the components of myelin, we have concentrated on the peripheral myelin glycoprotein P_0, which constitutes 50–60% of the protein in peripheral myelin. We have studied the distribution of P_0 in vitro and in vivo by immunofluorescence, immuno-autoradiography on SDS gels, and solid-phase radioimmunoassay. Our results support the hypothesis that P_0 is induced specifically as a consequence of the interaction between the Schwann cell and the myelinated type of axon. The level of P_0 in the myelin membrane is at least 1000-fold higher than in the Schwann cell membrane. Purified Schwann cells divide very slowly in a conventional tissue culture medium. This has allowed us to purify a new growth factor from extracts of brain and pituitary, tentatively named Glial Growth Factor (GGF). The activity resides in a basic protein with a native molecular weight of 6 × 10^4 daltons and a subunit molecular weight of 3 × 10^4 daltons, which is active at levels comparable to those of epidermal growth factor. The European Large Area ISO Survey - ISOPHOT results using the MPIA-pipeline
The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) will provide Infrared observations
of 4 regions in the sky with ISO. Around 2000 Infrared sources have been
detected at 7 and 15 microns (with ISOCAM), 90 and 175 microns (with ISOPHOT))
over 13 square degrees of the sky. We present the source extraction pipeline of
the 90 microns ISOPHOT observations, describe and discuss the results obtained

Victimisation and life satisfaction of gay and bisexual individuals in 44 European countries: the moderating role of country-level and person-level attitudes towards homosexuality
We examined the link between victimisation and life satisfaction for 85,301 gay and bisexual individuals across 44 European countries. We expected this negative link to be stronger when the internalised homonegativity of the victim was high (e.g. because the victim is more vulnerable) and weaker when victimisation occurs in countries that express intolerance towards homosexuality (e.g. because in such contexts victims expect victimisation more and they attribute it to their external environment). Additionally, we expected internalised homonegativity to relate negatively to life satisfaction. Multilevel analyses revealed that victimisation (i.e. verbal insults, threats of violence, minor or major physical assaults) and internalised homonegativity were negatively related to life satisfaction. Furthermore, as we expected, the negative link between victimisation and life satisfaction was stronger when high internalised homonegativity was reported (and the interaction effect occurred for verbal insults and major assaults as outcome variables), while it was weaker when there was low national tolerance of homosexuality (and the interaction effect occurred for verbal insults and for minor assaults). Future research and social policy should consider how the consequences of victimisation are dependent on personal as well as national attitudes towards homosexuality
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect at 1 and 2 mm towards ROSAT Clusters
An observing campaign was devoted to the search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich
(S-Z) effect towards X-ray ROSAT Clusters in the millimetric spectral domain. A
double channel (1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) photometer was installed at the focus of
the 15m Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST) in Chile in september 1994
and 1995 and observations of the targets S1077, A2744, S295 and RXJ0658-5557
were gathered. Detections were found for A2744 at 1 {\it mm} and in both
channels (at 1.2 and 2 {\it mm}) towards RXJ0658-5557. For the first time there
is evidence for the S-Z enhancement and both the latter and the decrement were
detected on the same source. We discuss astrophysical and systematic effects

Automated spectroscopic abundances of A and F-type stars using echelle spectrographs I. Reduction of ELODIE spectra and method of abundance determination
This paper presents an automated method to determine detailed abundances for
A and F-type stars. This method is applied on spectra taken with the ELODIE
spectrograph. Since the standard reduction procedure of ELODIE is optimized to
obtain accurate radial velocities but not abundances, we present a more
appropriate reduction procedure based on IRAF. We describe an improvement of
the method of Hill & Landstreet (1993) for obtaining Vsini, microturbulence and
abundances by fitting a synthetic spectrum to the observed one. In particular,
the method of minimization is presented and tested with Vega and the Sun. We
show that it is possible, in the case of the Sun, to recover the abundances of
27 elements well within 0.1 dex of the commonly accepted values.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Probing the interiors of the ice giants: Shock compression of water to 700 GPa and 3.8 g/ccm
Recently there has been tremendous increase in the number of identified
extra-solar planetary systems. Our understanding of their formation is tied to
exoplanet internal structure models, which rely upon equations of state of
light elements and compounds like water. Here we present shock compression data
for water with unprecedented accuracy that shows water equations of state
commonly used in planetary modeling significantly overestimate the
compressibility at conditions relevant to planetary interiors. Furthermore, we
show its behavior at these conditions, including reflectivity and isentropic
response, is well described by a recent first-principles based equation of
state. These findings advocate this water model be used as the standard for
modeling Neptune, Uranus, and "hot Neptune" exoplanets, and should improve our
