    Para ilação do Mestrado em Ensino de Educação Visual e Tecnológica no Ensino Básico, na Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu, foi elaborado o presente relatório final, este é composto por duas partes, uma primeira parte com a contextualização e análise das três Práticas de Ensino Supervisionadas, que pretende apresentar a síntese de um longo trabalho desenvolvido na prática de ensino supervisionado, que teve uma importância essencial, para o desempenho da função a que nos propomos como profissional, e, na segunda parte o projeto de investigação desenvolvido no sentido de perceber se a utilização das apps e ferramentas digitais podem ser facilitadoras e utilizadas nas disciplinas de Educação Visual e Educação Tecnológica. Além de pesquisa de documentação existente sobre temáticas em torno deste tema, houve também uma parte experimental com alunos de 5º ano de forma a compreender no campo como estes reagem à inclusão das tecnologias nas disciplinas.To complete the Master's Degree in Visual and Technological Education in Basic Education, at the Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu, this final report was prepared. This is composed of two parts, a first part with a contextualization and analysis of the three Supervised Teaching Practices, which aims to present a summary of a long work carried out in the practice of supervised teaching, which has an essential importance for the performance of the function we propose as professionals, and, in the second part of the research project carried out without a sense of perception. digital applications and tools can be facilitators and used in the disciplines of Visual Education and Technological Education.     Running Spectral Index and Formation of Primordial Black Hole in Single Field Inflation Models

    A broad range of single field models of inflation are analyzed in light of all relevant recent cosmological data, checking whether they can lead to the formation of long-lived Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). To that end we calculate the spectral index of the power spectrum of primordial perturbations as well as its first and second derivatives. PBH formation is possible only if the spectral index increases significantly at small scales, i.e. large wave number kk. Since current data indicate that the first derivative αS\alpha_S of the spectral index nS(k0)n_S(k_0) is negative at the pivot scale k0k_0, PBH formation is only possible in the presence of a sizable and positive second derivative ("running of the running") βS\beta_S. Among the three small-field and five large-field models we analyze, only one small-field model, the "running mass" model, allows PBH formation, for a narrow range of parameters. We also note that none of the models we analyze can accord for a large and negative value of αS\alpha_S, which is weakly preferred by current data.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Refs. added, Minor textual change; version to appear in JCA

    A translational framework for public health research

    <p><b>Background</b></p> <p>The paradigm of translational medicine that underpins frameworks such as the Cooksey report on the funding of health research does not adequately reflect the complex reality of the public health environment. We therefore outline a translational framework for public health research.</p> <p><b>Discussion</b></p> <p>Our framework redefines the objective of translation from that of institutionalising effective interventions to that of improving population health by influencing both individual and collective determinants of health. It incorporates epidemiological perspectives with those of the social sciences, recognising that many types of research may contribute to the shaping of policy, practice and future research. It also identifies a pivotal role for evidence synthesis and the importance of non-linear and intersectoral interfaces with the public realm.</p> <p><b>Summary</b></p> <p>We propose a research agenda to advance the field and argue that resources for 'applied' or 'translational' public health research should be deployed across the framework, not reserved for 'dissemination' or 'implementation'.</p&gt

    Teacher induction: personal intelligence and the mentoring relationship

    This article is aimed at probationer teachers in Scotland, their induction supporters, and all those with a responsibility for their support and professional development. It argues that the induction process is not merely a mechanistic one, supported only by systems in schools, local authorities and the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), but a more complex process where the relationship between the new teacher and the supporter is central to its success. In particular, the characteristics and skills of the induction supporter in relation to giving feedback are influential. This applies to feedback in all its forms – formative and summative, formal and informal. The ability of the probationer to handle that feedback and to be proactive in the process is also important

    Utilisation of Postnatal Care among Rural Women in Nepal

    Background: Postnatal care is uncommon in Nepal, and where it is available the quality is often poor. Adequate utilisation of postnatal care can help reduce mortality and morbidity among mothers and their babies. Therefore, our study assessed the utilisation of postnatal care at a rural community level. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in two neighbouring villages in early 2006. A total of 150 women who had delivered in the previous 24 months were asked to participate in the study using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: The proportion of women who had received postnatal care after delivery was low (34%). Less than one in five women (19%) received care within 48 hours of giving birth. Women in one village had less access to postnatal care than women in the neighbouring one. Lack of awareness was the main barrier to the utilisation of postnatal care. The woman's own occupation and ethnicity, the number of pregnancies and children and the husband's socio-economic status, occupation and education were significantly associated with the utilisation of postnatal care. Multivariate analysis showed that wealth as reflected in occupation and having attended antenatal are important factors associated with the uptake of postnatal care. In addition, women experiencing health problems appear strongly motivated to seek postnatal care. Conclusion: The postnatal care has a low uptake and is often regarded as inadequate in Nepal. This is an important message to both service providers and health-policy makers. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess the actual quality of postnatal care provided. Also there appears to be a need for awareness-raising programmes highlighting the availability of current postnatal care where this is of sufficient quality

    Magic N=2 supergravities from hyper-free superstrings

    We show by explicit construction the existence of various four dimensional models of type II superstrings with N=2 supersymmetry, purely vector multiplet spectrum and no hypermultiplets. Among these, two are of special interest, at the field theory level they correspond to the two exceptional N=2 supergravities of the magic square that have the same massless scalar field content as pure N=6 supergravity and N=3 supergravity coupled to three extra vector multiplets. The N=2 model of the magic square that is associated to N=6 supergravity is very peculiar since not only the scalar degrees of freedom but all the bosonic massless degrees of freedom are the same in both theories. All presented hyper-free N=2 models are based on asymmetric orbifold constructions with N=(4,1) world-sheet superconformal symmetry and utilize the 2d fermionic construction techniques. The two exceptional N=2 models of the magic square are constructed via a "twisting mechanism" that eliminates the extra gravitini of the N=6 and N=3 extended supergravities and creates at the same time the extra spin-1/2 fermions and spin-1 gauge bosons which are necessary to balance the numbers of bosons and fermions. Theories of the magic square with the same amount of supersymmetry in three and five space-time dimensions are constructed as well, via stringy reduction and oxidation from the corresponding four-dimensional models.Comment: 27 page

    Anatomical and/or pathological predictors for the “incorrect” classification of red dot markers on wrist radiographs taken following trauma

    OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of red dot markers in a sample of wrist radiographs and to identify any anatomical and/or pathological characteristics that predict “incorrect” red dot classification. METHODS: Accident and emergency (A&E) wrist cases from a digital imaging and communications in medicine/digital teaching library were examined for red dot prevalence and for the presence of several anatomical and pathological features. Binary logistic regression analyses were run to establish if any of these features were predictors of incorrect red dot classification. RESULTS: 398 cases were analysed. Red dot was “incorrectly” classified in 8.5% of cases; 6.3% were “false negatives” (“FNs”)and 2.3% false positives (FPs) (one decimal place). Old fractures [odds ratio (OR), 5.070 (1.256–20.471)] and reported degenerative change [OR, 9.870 (2.300–42.359)] were found to predict FPs. Frykman V [OR, 9.500 (1.954–46.179)], Frykman VI [OR, 6.333 (1.205–33.283)] and non-Frykman positive abnormalities [OR, 4.597 (1.264–16.711)] predict “FNs”. Old fractures and Frykman VI were predictive of error at 90% confidence interval (CI); the rest at 95% CI. CONCLUSION: The five predictors of incorrect red dot classification may inform the image interpretation training of radiographers and other professionals to reduce diagnostic error. Verification with larger samples would reinforce these findings. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: All healthcare providers strive to eradicate diagnostic error. By examining specific anatomical and pathological predictors on radiographs for such error, as well as extrinsic factors that may affect reporting accuracy, image interpretation training can focus on these “problem” areas and influence which radiographic abnormality detection schemes are appropriate to implement in A&E departments

    Regulation of Toll-like receptor signaling by NDP52-mediated selective autophagy is normally inactivated by A20

    Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling is linked to autophagy that facilitates elimination of intracellular pathogens. However, it is largely unknown whether autophagy controls TLR signaling. Here, we report that poly(I:C) stimulation induces selective autophagic degradation of the TLR adaptor molecule TRIF and the signaling molecule TRAF6, which is revealed by gene silencing of the ubiquitin-editing enzyme A20. This type of autophagy induced formation of autophagosomes and could be suppressed by an autophagy inhibitor and lysosomal inhibitors. However, this autophagy was not associated with canonical autophagic processes, including involvement of Beclin-1 and conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II. Through screening of TRIF-interacting ‘autophagy receptors’ in human cells, we identified that NDP52 mediated the selective autophagic degradation of TRIF and TRAF6 but not TRAF3. NDP52 was polyubiquitinated by TRAF6 and was involved in aggregation of TRAF6, which may result in the selective degradation. Intriguingly, only under the condition of A20 silencing, NDP52 could effectively suppress poly(I:C)-induced proinflammatory gene expression. Thus, this study clarifies a selective autophagic mechanism mediated by NDP52 that works downstream of TRIF–TRAF6. Furthermore, although A20 is known as a signaling fine-tuner to prevent excess TLR signaling, it paradoxically downregulates the fine-tuning effect of NDP52 on TLR signaling

    Access and utilisation of maternity care for disabled women who experience domestic abuse:a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Although disabled women are significantly more likely to experience domestic abuse during pregnancy than non-disabled women, very little is known about how maternity care access and utilisation is affected by the co-existence of disability and domestic abuse. This systematic review of the literature explored how domestic abuse impacts upon disabled women’s access to maternity services. METHODS: Eleven articles were identified through a search of six electronic databases and data were analysed to identify: the factors that facilitate or compromise access to care; the consequences of inadequate care for pregnant women’s health and wellbeing; and the effectiveness of existing strategies for improvement. RESULTS: Findings indicate that a mental health diagnosis, poor relationships with health professionals and environmental barriers can compromise women’s utilisation of maternity services. Domestic abuse can both compromise, and catalyse, access to services and social support is a positive factor when accessing care. Delayed and inadequate care has adverse effects on women’s physical and psychological health, however further research is required to fully explore the nature and extent of these consequences. Only one study identified strategies currently being used to improve access to services for disabled women experiencing abuse. CONCLUSIONS: Based upon the barriers and facilitators identified within the review, we suggest that future strategies for improvement should focus on: understanding women’s reasons for accessing care; fostering positive relationships; being women-centred; promoting environmental accessibility; and improving the strength of the evidence base
