Performance of ZigBee-based wireless sensor nodes for real-time monitoring of fruits logistics
Progress in fruit logistics requires an increasing number of measurements to be performed in refrigerated chambers and during transport. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are a promising solution in this field. This paper explores the potential of wireless sensor technology for monitoring fruit storage and transport conditions. It focuses in particular on ZigBee technology with special regard to two different commercial modules (Xbow and Xbee). The main contributions of the paper relate to the analysis of battery life under cooling conditions and the evaluation of the reliability of communications and measurements. Acute fasting before conception affects metabolic and endocrine status without impacting follicle and oocyte development and embryo gene expression in the rabbit.
Food deprivation affects female reproduction. The goal of the present study was to elucidate in the rabbit model the effects of acute energy restriction on ovarian function (follicle development, atresia rate and in vitro oocyte maturation) and embryonic development and gene expression of some candidate genes. Serum metabolic parameters (non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides, glucose, insulin and leptin concentrations) and endocrine markers (oestradiol-17β and progesterone concentrations) were also studied. A control group of nulliparous does fed ad libitum and a 72-h fasted group were used. At the end of the nutritional treatment, the ovaries of half of the animals were retrieved while the other animals were re-fed and artificially inseminated to recover embryos at 84 h after insemination, during the luteal phase. At the end of fasting, increased serum NEFA and decreased leptin concentrations were observed in the fasted group, but no differences appeared in serum steroid concentrations, follicle population and atresia rate or nuclear and cytoplasmic oocyte maturation. In the luteal phase, insulin concentrations increased notably in the fasted group. The number of recovered embryos per female and the speed of embryo development were reduced in the food-deprived group. Acute fasting altered both metabolic and endocrine markers and embryo development, but follicle and oocyte development and embryo gene expression were not affected
Assessment of metals bound to marine plankton proteins and to dissolved proteins in seawater
Studies based on laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA–ICP-MS) have been performed to assess metal bound to dissolved proteins and proteins from marine plankton after two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D PAGE). Dissolved proteins were pre-concentrated from surface seawater (60 L) by tangential ultrafiltration with 10 kDa molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) membranes and further centrifugal ultrafiltration (10 kDa) before proteins isolation by methanol/chloroform/water precipitation. Proteins isolation from plankton was assessed after different trichloroacetic acid (TCA)/acetone and methanol washing stages, and further proteins extraction with a phenol solution. LA–ICP-MS analysis of the electrophoretic profiles obtained for dissolved proteins shows the presence of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn in five spots analyzed. These proteins exhibit quite similar molecular weights (within the 10–14 kDa range) and pIs (from 5.8 to 7.3). Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn have also been found to be associated to proteins isolated from plankton samples. In this case, Cd has been found to be bound to proteins of quite different molecular weight (9, 13 and 22 kDa) and pIs (4.5, 5.2, 5.5, and 10). The role of emotional intelligence and self-care in the stress perception during COVID-19 outbreak: An intercultural moderated mediation analysis
Background: The relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and stress has been widely studied, as well as
the beneficial role of self-care to maintain health and wellbeing. However, the joint contribution of EI and self-
care in predicting stress has not been examined during COVID-19 lockdown. This study aimed to examine the
mediating role of self-care in the relationship between EI and stress and the potential moderator role of gender.
Methods: A sample of 1082 participants from four Hispanic countries completed measures related to socio-
demographic, trait emotional intelligence (Trait Meta-Mood Scale), self-care activities (Self-care Activities
Screening Scale) and stress (Perceived Stress Scale).
Results: Mediation analyses revealed that self-care increased the explained variance of the prediction of stress by EI dimensions after controlling gender and age. However, gender only moderated the relationship between selfcare and stress in the mediation model corresponding to emotional attention.
Conclusions: Data supported a general model for the interaction of EI and self-care as contributing factors of
stress. Further research is needed to replicate it in more culturally distant samples and to fully explore the po-
tential role of gender differences. Future intervention programs should include a balanced combination of EI and
self-care to increase their benefits on people’s healt
Impact of new technologies and social networks on a secondary education theatre project
This paper describes the potential impact of
social media and new technologies in secondary education.
The case of study has been designed for the drama and
theatre subject. A wide set of tools like social networks,
blogs, internet, multimedia content, local press and other
promotional tools are promoted to increase students’
motivation. The experiment was developed at the highschool
IES Al-Satt located in Algete in the Comunidad de
Madrid. The students included in the theatre group
present a low academic level, 80% of them had previously
repeated at least one grade, half of them come from
programs for students with learning difficulties and were
at risk of social exclusion. This action is supported by
higher and secondary education professors and teachers
who look forward to implanting networked media
technologies as new tools to improve the academic results
and the degree of involvement of students. The results of
the experiment have been excellent, based on satisfactory
opinions obtained from a survey answered by students at
the end of the course, and also revealed by the analytics
taken from different social networks. This project is a
pioneer in the introduction and usage of new technologies
in secondary high-schools in Spain
Automatic 3DTV Quality Assessment Based On Depth Perception Analysis
Quality assessment is a key factor for stereoscopic
3D video content as some observers are affected by visual
discomfort in the eye when viewing 3D video, especially
when combining positive and negative parallax with fast
motion. In this paper, we propose techniques to assess
objective quality related to motion and depth maps, which
facilitate depth perception analysis. Subjective tests were
carried out in order to understand the source of the problem.
Motion is an important feature affecting 3D experience but
also often the cause of visual discomfort. The automatic
algorithm developed tries to quantify the impact on viewer
experience when common cases of discomfort occur, such as
high-motion sequences, scene changes with abrupt parallax
changes, or complete absence of stereoscopy, with a goal of
preventing the viewer from having a bad stereoscopic
experience
Structure and relaxations in liquid and amorphous Selenium
We report a molecular dynamics simulation of selenium, described by a
three-body interaction. The temperatures T_g and T_c and the structural
properties are in agreement with experiment. The mean nearest neighbor
coordination number is 2.1. A small pre-peak at about 1 AA^-1 can be explained
in terms of void correlations. In the intermediate self-scattering function,
i.e. the density fluctuation correlation, classical behavior, alpha- and
beta-regimes, is found. We also observe the plateau in the beta-regime below
T_g. In a second step, we investigated the heterogeneous and/or homogeneous
behavior of the relaxations. At both short and long times the relaxations are
homogeneous (or weakly heterogeneous). In the intermediate time scale, lowering
the temperature increases the heterogeneity. We connect these different domains
to the vibrational (ballistic), beta- and alpha-regimes. We have also shown
that the increase in heterogeneity can be understood in terms of relaxations
Exploiting oxidative phosphorylation to promote the stem and immunoevasive properties of pancreatic cancer stem cells
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the fourth leading cause of cancer death, has a 5-year survival rate of approximately 7–9%. The ineffectiveness of anti-PDAC therapies is believed to be due to the existence of a subpopulation of tumor cells known as cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are functionally plastic, and have exclusive tumorigenic, chemoresistant and metastatic capacities. Herein, we describe a 2D in vitro system for long-term enrichment of pancreatic CSCs that is amenable to biological and CSC-specific studies. By changing the carbon source from glucose to galactose in vitro, we force PDAC cells to utilize OXPHOS, resulting in enrichment of CSCs defined by increased CSC biomarker and pluripotency gene expression, greater tumorigenic potential, induced but reversible quiescence, increased OXPHOS activity, enhanced invasiveness, and upregulated immune evasion properties. This CSC enrichment method can facilitate the discovery of new CSC-specific hallmarks for future development into targets for PDAC-based therapies
A retrospective, multicenter study of the efficacy of lapatinib plus trastuzumab in HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients previously treated with trastuzumab, lapatinib, or both: the Trastyvere study
[Purpose]: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lapatinib (L) and trastuzumab (T) combination in HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients previously treated with T and/or L.[Materials and methods]: We conducted a retrospective, post-authorized, multicenter study including patients with HER2-positive MBC or locally advanced breast cancer (ABC) treated with the combination of L–T. Concomitant endocrine therapy, as well as brain metastasis and/or prior exposure to L, were allowed.[Results]: One hundred and fifteen patients from 14 institutions were included. The median age was 59.8 years. The median number of prior T regimens in the advanced setting was 3 and 73 patients had received a prior L regimen. The clinical benefit rate (CBR) was 34.8% (95% CI 26.1–43.5). Among other efficacy endpoints, the overall response rate was 21.7%, and median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival were 3.9 and 21.6 months, respectively. Heavily pretreated and ≥ 3 metastatic organ patients showed lower CBR and PFS than patients with a low number of previous regimens and < 3 metastatic organs. Moreover, CBR did not significantly change in L-pretreated compared with L-naïve patients (31.5% versus 40.5% for L-pretreated versus L-naïve). Grade 3/4 adverse events were reported in 19 patients (16.5%).[Conclusion]: The combination of L–T is an effective and well-tolerated regimen in heavily pretreated patients and remains active among patients progressing on prior L-based therapy. Trajectories of alcohol consumption during life and the risk of developing breast cancer
Background: Whether there are lifetime points of greater sensitivity to the deleterious effects of alcohol intake on the breasts remains inconclusive. Objective: To compare the influence of distinctive trajectories of alcohol consumption throughout a woman’s life on development of breast cancer (BC). Methods: 1278 confirmed invasive BC cases and matched (by age and residence) controls from the Epi-GEICAM study (Spain) were used. The novel group-based trajectory modelling was used to identify different alcohol consumption trajectories throughout women’s lifetime. Results: Four alcohol trajectories were identified. The first comprised women (45%) with low alcohol consumption (<5 g/day) throughout their life. The second included those (33%) who gradually moved from a low alcohol consumption in adolescence to a moderate in adulthood (5 to <15 g/day), never having a high consumption; and oppositely, women in the third trajectory (16%) moved from moderate consumption in adolescence, to a lower consumption in adulthood. Women in the fourth (6%) moved from a moderate alcohol consumption in adolescence to the highest consumption in adulthood (=15 g/day), never having a low alcohol consumption. Comparing with the first trajectory, the fourth doubled BC risk (OR 2.19; 95% CI 1.27, 3.77), followed by the third (OR 1.44; 0.96, 2.16) and ultimately by the second trajectory (OR 1.17; 0.86, 1.58). The magnitude of BC risk was greater in postmenopausal women, especially in those with underweight or normal weight. When alcohol consumption was independently examined at each life stage, =15 g/day of alcohol consumption in adolescence was strongly associated with BC risk followed by consumption in adulthood. Conclusions: The greater the alcohol consumption accumulated throughout life, the greater the risk of BC, especially in postmenopausal women. Alcohol consumption during adolescence may particularly influence BC risk. © 2021, The Author(s)
