A comparison between matter wave and light wave interferometers for the detection of gravitational waves
We calculate and compare the response of light wave interferometers and
matter wave interferometers to gravitational waves. We find that metric matter
wave interferometers will not challenge kilometric light wave interferometers
such as Virgo or LIGO, but could be a good candidate for the detection of very
low frequency gravitational waves

Effect of side chains on the dielectric properties of alkyl esters derived from palm kernel oil
Alkyl ester derivatives were synthesized from laboratory purified palm kernel oil. The steps in the synthesis involved transesterification of palm kernel oil to produce a methyl ester, followed by epoxidation and then the grafting of side chains by esterification with propionic and butyric anhydride. The dielectric and thermal properties of the ester derivatives were analyzed and compared with the methyl ester. The melting point of the ester derivatives were found to reduce with side chain attachment and antioxidant improved its thermal stability. The dielectric loss was dominated by mobile charged particles and the chemical modification appeared to increase the rate at which electric double layer was formed at the electrode-liquid interface. The esters possessed excellent breakdown strengths suggesting that the processing to optimize their physical properties did not have a negative influence on their electrical breakdown strength. This product may prove useful as an insulation fluid in Electrical Power Transformers
Interferometer Response to Scalar Gravitational Waves
It was recently suggested that the magnetic component of Gravitational Waves
(GWs) is relevant in the evaluation of frequency response functions of
gravitational interferometers. In this paper we extend the analysis to the
magnetic component of the scalar mode of GWs which arise from scalar-tensor
gravity theory. In the low-frequency approximation, the response function of
ground-based interferometers is calculated. The angular dependence of the
electric and magnetic contributions to the response function is discussed.
Finally, for an arbitrary frequency range, the proper distance between two test
masses is calculated and its usefulness in the high-frequency limit for

Minimal Brownian Ratchet: An Exactly Solvable Model
We develop an exactly-solvable three-state discrete-time minimal Brownian
ratchet (MBR), where the transition probabilities between states are
asymmetric. By solving the master equations we obtain the steady-state
probabilities. Generally the steady-state solution does not display detailed
balance, giving rise to an induced directional motion in the MBR. For a reduced
two-dimensional parameter space we find the null-curve on which the net current
vanishes and detailed balance holds. A system on this curve is said to be
balanced. On the null-curve, an additional source of external random noise is
introduced to show that a directional motion can be induced under the zero
overall driving force. We also indicate the off-balance behavior with biased

Proposed method for searches of gravitational waves from PKS 2155-304 and other blazar flares
We propose to search for gravitational waves from PKS 2155-304 as well as
other blazars. PKS 2155-304 emitted a long duration energetic flare in July
2006, with total isotropic equivalent energy released in TeV gamma rays of
approximately ergs. Any possible gravitational wave signals
associated with this outburst should be seen by gravitational wave detectors at
the same time as the electromagnetic signal. During this flare, the two LIGO
interferometers at Hanford and the GEO detector were in operation and
collecting data. For this search we will use the data from multiple
gravitational wave detectors. The method we use for this purpose is a coherent
network analysis algorithm and is called {\tt RIDGE}. To estimate the
sensitivity of the search, we perform numerical simulations. The sensitivity to
estimated gravitational wave energy at the source is about
ergs for a detection probability of 20%. For this search, an end-to-end
analysis pipeline has been developed, which takes into account the motion of

Searches for Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars: A Review
A new generation of observatories is looking for gravitational waves. These
waves, emitted by highly relativistic systems, will open a new window for ob-
servation of the cosmos when they are detected. Among the most promising
sources of gravitational waves for these observatories are compact binaries in
the final min- utes before coalescence. In this article, we review in brief
interferometric searches for gravitational waves emitted by neutron star
binaries, including the theory, instru- mentation and methods. No detections
have been made to date. However, the best direct observational limits on
coalescence rates have been set, and instrumentation and analysis methods
continue to be refined toward the ultimate goal of defining the new field of
