    Trap-Assisted Tunneling in the Schottky Barrier

    The paper presents a new way how to calculate the currents in a Schottky barrier. The novel phenomeno-logical model extends the Shockley-Read-Hall recombi-nation-generation theory of trap-assisted tunneling. The proposed approach explains the occurrence of large leakage currents in Schottky structures on wide band semi-conductors with a high Schottky barrier (above 1 eV) and with a high density of traps. Under certain conditions, trap-assisted tunneling (TAT) plays a more important role than direct tunneling

    Properties of the inner penumbral boundary and temporal evolution of a decaying sunspot

    It was empirically determined that the umbra-penumbra boundaries of stable sunspots are characterized by a constant value of the vertical magnetic field. We analyzed the evolution of the photospheric magnetic field properties of a decaying sunspot belonging to NOAA 11277 between August 28 - September 3, 2011. The observations were acquired with the spectropolarimeter on-board of the Hinode satellite. We aim to proof the validity of the constant vertical magnetic-field boundary between the umbra and penumbra in decaying sunspots. A spectral-line inversion technique was used to infer the magnetic field vector from the full-Stokes profiles. In total, eight maps were inverted and the variation of the magnetic properties in time were quantified using linear or quadratic fits. We found a linear decay of the umbral vertical magnetic field, magnetic flux, and area. The penumbra showed a linear increase of the vertical magnetic field and a sharp decay of the magnetic flux. In addition, the penumbral area quadratically decayed. The vertical component of the magnetic field is weaker on the umbra-penumbra boundary of the studied decaying sunspot compared to stable sunspots. Its value seem to be steadily decreasing during the decay phase. Moreover, at any time of the shown sunspot decay, the inner penumbra boundary does not match with a constant value of the vertical magnetic field, contrary to what was seen in stable sunspots. During the decaying phase of the studied sunspot, the umbra does not have a sufficiently strong vertical component of the magnetic field and is thus unstable and prone to be disintegrated by convection or magnetic diffusion. No constant value of the vertical magnetic field was found for the inner penumbral boundary.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 6 pages, 7 figure

    Degradation of glycine and alanine on irradiated quartz

    Recent researches suggest participation of minerals in the formation of life under primordial conditions. Among all of the minerals, quartz seems to be one of the most probable to take part in such processes. However, an external source of energy is needed, e.g. electric discharge. A device simulating the proposed conditions was designed and was used to simulate prebiotic conditions. Investigation of processes occurring during the stimulation of quartz with electric discharge was studied by means of Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, in order to monitor the generation kinetics of free radicals. Additionally, infrared spectroscopy was applied to identify chemical reaction products created in a solution of alanine or glycine, in the presence of quartz treated with electric discharge. Formation of increased amounts of free radicals, compared to experiments performed without quartz and/or amino acid, is reported, along with identification of possible degradation products of alanine. No synthetic reactions were observed

    Xtru3D: Single-View 3D Object Reconstruction from Color and Depth Data

    D object reconstruction from single image has been a noticeable research trend in recent years. The most common method is to rely on symmetries of real-life objects, but these are hard to compute in practice. However, a large class of everyday objects, especially when manufactured, can be generated by extruding a 2D shape through an extrusion axis. This paper proposes to exploit this property to acquire 3D object models using a single RGB+Depth image, such as those provided by available low-cost range cameras. It estimates the hidden parts by exploiting the geometrical properties of everyday objects, and both depth and color information are combined to refine the model of the object of interest.     A new, potent poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor improves cardiac and vascular dysfunction associated with advanced aging

    Increased production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac and endothelial dysfunction associated with atherosclerosis, hypertension, and aging. Oxidant-induced cell injury triggers the activation of nuclear enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), which in turn contributes to cardiac and vascular dysfunction in various pathophysiological conditions including diabetes, reperfusion injury, circulatory shock, and aging. Here, we investigated the effect of a new PARP inhibitor, INO-1001, on cardiac and endothelial dysfunction associated with advanced aging using Millar's new Aria pressure-volume conductance system and isolated aortic rings. Young adult (3 months old) and aging (24 months old) Fischer rats were treated for 2 months with vehicle, or the potent PARP inhibitor INO-1001. In the vehicle-treated aging animals, there was a marked reduction of both systolic and diastolic cardiac function and loss of endothelial relaxant responsiveness of aortic rings to acetylcholine. Treatment with INO-1001 improved cardiac performance in aging animals and also acetylcholine-induced, nitric oxide-mediated vascular relaxation. Thus, pharmacological inhibition of PARP may represent a novel approach to improve cardiac and vascular dysfunction associated with aging

    Identification of influential invaders in evolutionary populations

    The identification of the most influential nodes has been a vibrant subject of research across the whole of network science. Here we map this problem to structured evolutionary populations, where strategies and the interaction network are both subject to change over time based on social inheritance. We study cooperative communities, which cheaters can invade because they avoid the cost of contributions that are associated with cooperation. The question that we seek to answer is at which nodes cheaters invade most successfully. We propose the weighted degree decomposition to identify and rank the most influential invaders. More specifically, we distinguish two kinds of ranking based on the weighted degree decomposition. We show that a ranking strategy based on negative-weighted degree allows to successfully identify the most influential invaders in the case of weak selection, while a ranking strategy based on positive-weighted degree performs better when the selection is strong. Our research thus reveals how to identify the most influential invaders based on statistical measures in dynamically evolving cooperative communities
