Where do perturbative and non-perturbative QCD meet?

    Get PDF
We computed the static potential and Wilson loops to O(α2)O(\alpha^2) in perturbation theory for different lattice quark and gluon actions. In general, we find short distance lattice data to be well described by ``boosted perturbation theory''. For Wilson-type fermions at present-day quark masses and lattice spacings agreement within 10% between measured ``β\beta-shifts'' and those predicted by perturbation theory is found. We comment on prospects for a determination of the real world QCD running coupling.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Talk at Lattice 2001 in renormalisation and improvement sessio

    bbˉb\bar b Description with a Screened Potential

Recent lattice QCD calculations suggest a rather abrupt transition in the confinig potential from a linear to a constant behavior. We analyze the effects of such a fast deconfinement in the simplest non-relativistic system, bottomonium.Comment: 4 pages. Presented at MENU04, Beijing 2004. To be published by IJMP

The Spatial String Tension in the Deconfined Phase of the (3+1)-Dimensional SU(2) Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
We present results of a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the spatial string tension in SU(2) gauge theory. We show, for the first time, that the spatial string tension is scaling on the lattice and thus is non-vanishing in the continuum limit. It is temperature independent below Tc and rises rapidly above. For temperatures larger than 2Tc we find a scaling behaviour consistent with sigma_s(T) = 0.136(11) g^4(T) T^2, where g(T) is the 2-loop running coupling constant with a scale parameter determined as Lambda_T = 0.076(13) Tc.Comment: 8 pages (Latex, shell archive, 3 PostScript figures), HLRZ-93-43, BI-TP 93/30, FSU-SCRI-93-76, WUB 93-2

Goal Programming Approach for Selection of COTS Components in Designing a Fault Tolerant Modular Software System under Consensus Recovery Block Scheme

    Get PDF
The application of computer systems has now crossed many different fields. Systems are becoming more software intensive. The requirements of the customer for a more reliable software led to the fact that software reliability is now an important research area. One method to improve software reliability is by the application of redundancy. A careful use of redundancy may allow the system to tolerate faults generated during software design and coding thus improving software reliability. The fault tolerant software systems are usually developed by integrating COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) software components. This paper is designed to select optimal components for a fault tolerant modular software system so as to maximize the overall reliability of the system with simultaneously minimizing the overall cost. A chance constrained goal programming model has been designed after considering the parameters corresponding to reliability and cost of the components as random variable. The random variable in this case has been considered as value which has known mean and standard deviation. A chance constraint goal programming technique is used to solve the model. The issue of compatibility among different commercial off-the shelf alternatives is also considered in the paper. Numerical illustrations are provided to demonstrate the model

Short distance physics with heavy quark potentials

    Get PDF
We present lattice studies of heavy quark potentials in the quenched approximation of QCD at finite temperatures. Both, the color singlet and color averaged potentials are calculated. While the potentials are well known at large distances, we give a detailed analysis of their short distance behavior (from 0.015 fm to 1 fm) near the critical temperature. At these distances we expect that the T-dependent potentials go over into the zero temperature potential. Indeed, we find evidences that the temperature influence gets suppressed and the potentials starts to become a unique function of the underlying distance scale. We use this feature to normalize the heavy quark potentials at short distances and extract the free energy of the quark system in a gluonic heat bath.Comment: Lattice2001(hightemp), 3 pages, 2 figure

Casimir scaling of SU(3) static potentials

    Get PDF
Potentials between static colour sources in eight different representations are computed in four dimensional SU(3) gauge theory. The simulations have been performed with the Wilson action on anisotropic lattices where the renormalised anisotropies have been determined non-perturbatively. After an extrapolation to the continuum limit we are able to exclude any violations of the Casimir scaling hypothesis that exceed 5% for source separations of up to 1 fm.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, RevTeX, v2: 1 reference added, more explanation about advantages of anisotrop

Analyzing Gender Difference in Leadership Styles and Behaviour of Heads of Schools in Tanzania

    Get PDF
This study made a comparative analysis of leadership styles and behavior of male and female heads of primary schools in Kasulu District, Tanzania. One hundred and ninety participants were sampled purposively and randomly from 22 public primary schools. A multi-method data collection strategy including interviews, questionnaire and documentary analysis, was deployed. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The descriptive statistics used included frequency tables, charts, mean scores, and t-test. Overall, results revealed that, participative, democratic, team management and authoritative leadership styles were deployed by both male and female heads of schools in running primary schools. Similarities and differences were observed in terms of frequency and manner in which those leadership styles were used by male and female school heads. Moreover, both male and female heads of schools were found with the same amount of task oriented leadership behavior. However, female heads of schools showed more task oriented leadership behavior than male heads. The study thus recommends addressing the situation of gender imbalance in schools leadership so as to utilize the revealed leadership talents and skills of female heads of schools as it has been done for male school heads. Geometry of percolating monopole clusters

    Get PDF
We perform detailed measurements of the geometrical characteristics of the percolating cluster of the magnetic monopole currents in the confining phase of the lattice SU(2) gluodynamics. The Maximal Abelian projection is used to define the monopoles. The use of the geometrical language is motivated by recent observations that the full non-Abelian action associated with the monopoles corresponds to point-like particles on the currently available lattices. Scaling behavior of various quantities is observed.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Lattice2002(topology
