Facial emotion recognition in children with autism spectrum disorder: Are emotional primes effective?
INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the facial emotion recognition problems in children with autism spectrum disorder and how different emotional primes (visual and vocal primes) affected this deficiency. METHODS: Two separate experiments using the prime task were conducted in which only the prime modality was differentiated. Visual (Experiment-1) or vocal (Experiment-2) emotion primes were presented in the task. Then the participant decided whether the faces presented after primes had emotion. RESULTS: In both experiments, children with autism spectrum disorder showed impaired performance compared to healthy peers, and a happy face advantage was seen in both experiments independent of the group. Reaction time increased in autism spectrum disorder when the sad vocal prime was given. However, the priming effect was not seen in any modality in either group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Emotional priming has no effect on the recognition performance of healthy control and children with autism spectrum disorder. Sad vocal prime has a negative impact on children with autism spectrum disorder's ability to recognize faces. Happy and neutral tones as much as possible should be employed in the training and intervention programs for autism spectrum disorder, considering the effects of sad vocals
Changes in the superior longitudinal fasciculus and anterior thalamic radiation in the left brain are associated with developmental dyscalculia
Developmental dyscalculia is a neurodevelopmental disorder specific to arithmetic learning even with normal intelligence and age-appropriate education. Difficulties often persist from childhood through adulthood lowering the individual’s quality of life. However, the neural correlates of developmental dyscalculia are poorly understood. This study aimed to identify brain structural connectivity alterations in developmental dyscalculia. All participants were recruited from a large scale, non-referred population sample in a longitudinal design. We studied 10 children with developmental dyscalculia (11.3 ± 0.7 years) and 16 typically developing peers (11.2 ± 0.6 years) using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. We assessed white matter microstructure with tract-based spatial statistics in regions-of-interest tracts that had previously been related to math ability in children. Then we used global probabilistic tractography for the first time to measure and compare tract length between developmental dyscalculia and typically developing groups. The high angular resolution diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and crossing-fiber probabilistic tractography allowed us to evaluate the length of the pathways compared to previous studies. The major findings of our study were reduced white matter coherence and shorter tract length of the left superior longitudinal/arcuate fasciculus and left anterior thalamic radiation in the developmental dyscalculia group. Furthermore, the lower white matter coherence and shorter pathways tended to be associated with the lower math performance. These results from the regional analyses indicate that learning, memory and language-related pathways in the left hemisphere might be related to developmental dyscalculia in children
Quality changes of fish patties produced from anchovy during refrigerated storage
Quality changes of anchovy patties at the storage temperature of 4 degrees C were investigated. After patties had been prepared using minced anchovy meat they were stored in a refrigerator. Quality control analyses were conducted for every day of storage. Total volatile basic nitrogen and thiobarbutiric acid values increased, and acidity and sensory scores decreased during the storage. The peroxide value significantly increased until the fifth day of storage then decreased on days 5 and 6 of storage. Anchovy patties were consumable up to 6 days
Sığır Etinin Kalitesi ve Raf Ömrü Üzerine Paketleme Atmosferlerinin Etkileri
The effects of modified atmosphere packaging on the quality and shelf life of beef steaks were investigated. Beef steaks were packed under varying modifi ed atmosphere conditions (A = 70% CO2, 30% N2; B = 80% CO2, 20% O2; C = 30% CO2, 10% N2, 60% O2; D = 100% CO2; E= 100% O2) and vacuum. The lowest pH and TBA values were found in the samples packed with carbondioxide and vacuum. High level oxygen increased lipid oxidation during the storage. Oxygen in the pack also caused discoloration. Microbial inhibition was observed in case of presence of carbondioxide. The best quality was observed with 70% CO2, 30% N2 atmosphere. Shelf life of beef steaks packed under this atmosphere was 14 days.
