Identifying tumour genetic markers is an essential task for biomedicine. In this thesis, we analyse a dataset of chromosomal rearrangements of cancer samples and present a methodology for extracting genetic markers from this dataset by using a Random Forest as a feature selection tool

Unemployment duration among immigrants and natives: unobserved heterogeneity in a multi-spell duration model

    Get PDF
This paper studies whether the unemployment dynamics of immigrants differ from those of natives, paying special attention to the impact of accounting for unobserved heterogeneity among individuals. Using a large administrative data set for Spain, we estimate multiple-spell discrete duration models which disentangle unobserved heterogeneity from duration dependence. Specifically, we estimate random effects models assuming that the distribution of the effects is discrete with finite support, and fixed effects models in which the distribution of the unobserved effects is left unrestricted. Our results show the importance of accounting for unobserved heterogeneity and that mistaken policy implications can be derived due to improper treatment of unmeasured variables. We find that lack of control for unobserved heterogeneity leads to the conclusion that immigrant males have a higher probability of leaving unemployment than natives and that the negative effect of unemployment benefits for immigrants lasts longer than for natives. Nonetheless, the estimates which do control for unobserved heterogeneity show the opposite results

Although they could not access the official academic learning, they received lessons from the most famous sculptors of the time. All these sculptresses had family ties to prominent intellectuals and artists, standing in the shadow of their fathers or husbands, in a supporting role. They were criticized for working in sculpture, a field “unfit” for them. But a deep commitment and a proven talent made? them overcome the impediments and given to the modeling of their works. These women left an inheritance, they are a reference to the first generation of professional sculptresses in our country that will emerge a few decades later. Disclose their names and rescue their works, gives us the opportunity to recover these women’s memory and evaluate their works in perspective

This paper considers the estimation of discrete time duration models. We highlight the enhance identification opportunities embedded in multiple spell data to separately identify the effect of duration dependence and individual time invariant unobserved heterogeneity. We consider two types of models: (i) random effects models specifying a mass point distribution for the unobserved heterogeneity; and (ii) fixed effects models in which the distribution of the effects is left unrestricted. The availability of multiple spell data allows us to consider this type of models, in the spirit of fixed effects discrete choice panel data models. We study the finite sample properties of different estimators for previous models by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, as an empirical illustration, we estimate unemployment duration models using Spanish administrative data with information on the entire labor history of the individuals.Duration models; Discrete choice; Multiple spells; Unobserved heterogeneity; Unemployment.

We will make several tests that will show the effect of factors such as population density and the food in the growth of individuals. We will also see if recreating the environmental conditions of winter and summer alike develop octopuses in captivity. We will also make a comparative biochemical analysis between wild individuals and individuals in captivity and study the expression of stress genes with conducting some q-PCRs.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.CIE).

This article examines Franz Kafka’s The Trial using some of the keys to political thought offered by Javier Roiz and his teachers in the field of rhetoric. Kafka introduced the tragic genre in 20th century literature, reflecting the tensions of the modern citizen that is subject to political institutions that control the destinies and lives of individuals, entering in foro interno and leading to a loss of people’s capacity to judge freely. The masters of rhetoric observe that the formation of the State and citizens’ obedience to laws are two aspects of politics that have deeper philosophical roots than the Cartesian rationalism that dominates in Western Schools, and that the tension between Athens and Jerusalem, between truth and law, is in fact a more complex and richer source of thought
