Recovery of the phenolic compounds present in SE would represent a very interesting valorisation option. Two main challenges need to be solved, firstly, the solubilisation and recovery of the phenolic compounds contained in SE, and, after that, the stabilisation of the resulted de-phenolized SE. The present research evaluates the potential of a biorefinery process combining a hydrothermal pre-treatment, followed by a phenolic extraction process and, finally, the anaerobic digestion of the remaining SE for producing energy that will contribute to compensate the energy requirements of the whole system. Following the hydrothermal pre-treatment at 170 degrees C for 60 min, an extraction of 0.6 +/- 0.1 g of gallic acid per kilogram of SE was achieved using an adsorbent resin, representing a recovery rate of 64 %. Long-term semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of de-phenolized SE was evaluated at different organic loading rates to evaluate the stability of the process. The anaerobic digestion of pre-treated SE achieved a stable methane production value of 243 +/- 34 mL CH4.g volatile solids.L-1.d(-1) at an organic loading rate (ORL) of 1.25 g volatile solids.L-1.d(-1). During the operation at this ORL, the control parameters including pH, alkalinity, soluble chemical organic demand (sCOD), and volatile fatty acid (VFA) remained stable and consistently constant. Specifically, the VFA in the reactor during this stable period achieved a value of 102 +/- 128 mg O2/L. Also, an economic balance showed that the minimal price of the generated phenolic extract for having benefited from the proposed biorefinery system was 0.812 epsilon.(g of gallic acid equivalents)(-1), a price within the range of phenolic compounds used in the food industry.Spanish Government CTM2017-83870-RRegional Government of Andalusia UHU-125772

Concept learning consistency under three‑way decision paradigm

    Get PDF
Concept Mining is one of the main challenges both in Cognitive Computing and in Machine Learning. The ongoing improvement of solutions to address this issue raises the need to analyze whether the consistency of the learning process is preserved. This paper addresses a particular problem, namely, how the concept mining capability changes under the reconsideration of the hypothesis class. The issue will be raised from the point of view of the so-called Three-Way Decision (3WD) paradigm. The paradigm provides a sound framework to reconsider decision-making processes, including those assisted by Machine Learning. Thus, the paper aims to analyze the influence of 3WD techniques in the Concept Learning Process itself. For this purpose, we introduce new versions of the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension. Likewise, to illustrate how the formal approach can be instantiated in a particular model, the case of concept learning in (Fuzzy) Formal Concept Analysis is considered. This work is supported by State Investigation Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación), project PID2019-109152GB-100/AEI/10.13039/501100011033. Quantification and characterization of the microstructural damage of recycled aggregate self-compacting concrete under cyclic temperature changes

    Get PDF
Recycled Aggregate (RA) usually increases porosity and weakens Interfacial Transition Zones (ITZs) of concrete, which favors the appearance of internal thermal damage. Four Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) mixes with coarse and fine RA were subjected to positive and negative cyclic temperature variations to characterize their thermal damage and quantify its effects. Two damage mechanisms were found. On the one hand, micro-cracks appeared in the ITZs. On the other hand, micro-cracks arose from the micro-pores and propagated through the cementitious matrix. Both damage mechanisms were promoted by the use of coarse and fine RA, respectively. The damage was most notable at sub-zero temperatures and when adding coarse RA. Furthermore, it primarily affected compressive strength, although ultrasonic pulse velocity and hardened density also decreased, which served as non-destructive indicators to indirectly quantify the level of thermal internal damage of SCC.This work was funded by MICINN, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00; FPU17/03374]; JCyL and ERDF [UIC-231]; and the University of Burgos [SUCONS, Y135.GI]

Since pathologic complete response is one of the most important target endpoints of NACT, further investigation of NACT outcomes in BC is crucial. Thus, identifying sensitive and specific predictors of treatment response for each phenotype would enable early detection of chemoresistance and residual disease, decreasing exposures to ineffective therapies and enhancing overall survival rates. We used liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS)-based untargeted metabolomics to detect molecular changes in plasma of three different BC subtypes following the same NACT regimen, with the aim of searching for potential predictors of response. The metabolomics data set was analyzed by combining univariate and multivariate statistical strategies. By using ANOVA–simultaneous component analysis (ASCA), we were able to determine the prognostic value of potential biomarker candidates of response to NACT in the triple-negative (TN) subtype. Higher concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid and secondary bile acids were found at basal and presurgery samples, respectively, in the responders group. In addition, the glycohyocholic and glycodeoxycholic acids were able to classify TN patients according to response to treatment and overall survival with an area under the curve model > 0.77. In relation to luminal B (LB) and HER2+ subjects, it should be noted that significant differences were related to time and individual factors. Specifically, tryptophan was identified to be decreased over time in HER2+ patients, whereas LysoPE (22:6) appeared to be increased, but could not be associated with response to NACT. Therefore, the combination of untargeted-based metabolomics along with longitudinal statistical approaches may represent a very useful tool for the improvement of treatment and in administering a more personalized BC follow-up in the clinical practice.Fundacion MEDINAFundacion Bancaria UnicajaAgencia Andaluza del Conocimiento, Regional Government of AndaluciaEuropean Commission B-TIC-136-UGR2

Does the meteorological origin of heat waves influence their impact on health? A 6-year morbidity and mortality study in Madrid (Spain)

In Spain, two synoptic-scale conditions influence heat wave formation. The first involves advection of warm and dry air masses carrying dust of Saharan origin. Objective: to determine whether the impact of heat waves on health outcomes in Madrid (Spain) during 2013–2018 varied by synoptic-scale condition. The authors wish to thank the funding provided by the ENPY 304/20, and ENPY 436/21 projects of the National Health Institute Carlos III (ISCIII)
