    Anomalous electronic Raman scattering in Na_xCoO_2 H_2O

    Raman scattering experiments on Na_{x}CoO_2 yH_2O single crystals show a broad electronic continuum with a pronounced peak around 100 cm-1 and a cutoff at approximately 560 cm-1over a wide range of doping levels. The electronic Raman spectra in superconducting and non-superconducting samples are similar at room temperature, but evolve in markedly different ways with decreasing temperature. For superconducting samples, the low-energy spectral weight is depleted upon cooling below T* sim 150K, indicating a opening of a pseudogap that is not present in non-superconducting materials.     Interaction of a Magnetic Impurity with Strongly Correlated Conduction Electrons

    We consider a magnetic impurity which interacts by hybridization with a system of strongly correlated conduction electrons. The latter are described by a Hubbard Hamiltonian. By means of a canconical transformation the charge degrees of freedom of the magnetic impurity are eliminated. The resulting effective Hamiltonian HeffH_{\rm eff} is investigated and various limiting cases are considered. If the Hubbard interaction UU between the conduction electrons is neglected HeffH_{\rm eff} reduces to a form obtained by the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, which is essentially the Kondo Hamiltonian. If UU is large and the correlations are strong HeffH_{\rm eff} is changed. One modification concerns the coefficient of the dominant exchange coupling of the magnetic impurity with the nearest lattice site. When the system is hole doped, there is also an antiferromagnetic coupling to the nearest neighbors of that site involving additionally a hole. Furthermore, it is found that the magnetic impurity attracts a hole. In the case of electron doping, double occupancies are repelled by the impurity. In contrast to the hole-doped case, we find no magnetic coupling which additionally involves a doubly occupied site.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex 3.

    A Randomized Controlled Trial of Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist in a Rabbit Model of Ascending Infection in Pregnancy

    Objective: To determinewhether treatment with interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1-ra) would affect amniotic fluid concentrations of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and prostaglandins or clinical or microbiological outcomes in a model of ascending bacterial infection in pregnancy. Methods: Timed pregnant New Zealand white rabbits at 70% of gestation underwent endoscopic inoculation of the cervices with 10(6)–10(6) cfu Escherichia coli . Animals were randomly assigned in a blinded manner to a 5-h intravenous infusion of human IL1-ra (10 mg/kg) or placebo beginning 1 – 2 h after inoculation. Blood was drawn fromthe does for assay of serum IL1-ra concentration before inoculation, at mid-infusion, after the infusion ended and at necropsy. At necropsy, temperature and cultures were taken, and aspirated amniotic fluid was pooled for assays of TNF-α, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and IL1-ra. Results: Serum IL1-ra concentrations rose to a mean of 2 mg/ml at mid-infusion and fell markedly after the infusion to concentrations barely detectable at necropsy. Between the two groups, there were no significant differences in the rates of fever or positive cultures or in amniotic fluid concentrations of PGE(2) or TNF-α.One unique finding was the demonstration that administration of human IL1-ra to the does resulted inmeasurable concentrationsof human IL1-ra in the amniotic fluid. Conclusions: Treatment with an intravenous infusion of human IL1-ra after cervical inoculation with E. coli did not affect clinical or microbiological outcomes or amniotic fluid concentrations of TNF-α or PGE(2). This experiment provides the first demonstration of passageof human IL1-ra from the maternal bloodstreamto the amniotic fluid

    Cluster algebras of type A2(1)A_2^{(1)}

    In this paper we study cluster algebras \myAA of type A2(1)A_2^{(1)}. We solve the recurrence relations among the cluster variables (which form a T--system of type A2(1)A_2^{(1)}). We solve the recurrence relations among the coefficients of \myAA (which form a Y--system of type A2(1)A_2^{(1)}). In \myAA there is a natural notion of positivity. We find linear bases \BB of \myAA such that positive linear combinations of elements of \BB coincide with the cone of positive elements. We call these bases \emph{atomic bases} of \myAA. These are the analogue of the "canonical bases" found by Sherman and Zelevinsky in type A1(1)A_{1}^{(1)}. Every atomic basis consists of cluster monomials together with extra elements. We provide explicit expressions for the elements of such bases in every cluster. We prove that the elements of \BB are parameterized by \ZZ^3 via their g\mathbf{g}--vectors in every cluster. We prove that the denominator vector map in every acyclic seed of \myAA restricts to a bijection between \BB and \ZZ^3. In particular this gives an explicit algorithm to determine the "virtual" canonical decomposition of every element of the root lattice of type A2(1)A_2^{(1)}.     Developing Conceptual and Methodological Foundations in Community Engagement

    We describe the efforts of two related undergraduate projects to promote lasting social change in marginalized communities in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The projects represent a test of the premise that undergraduate projects can engage academically based strategies and transcend good intentions to achieve effective community partnerships to improve health and health care. The projects proceed from a perspective and theory of marginalization and its consequences. Specifically, marginalization undermines individual and collective capacity to meet basic needs and efforts to thrive. Through strengthening social infrastructure, communities can overcome the effects of marginalization. Project work begins with annual medical clinics and, with the permission of community residents, team members conduct ethnographic descriptions of the communities and their health and health care concerns and resources. We use social network analysis (SNA) and geographic information system (GIS) techniques to describe social infrastructure. Working from those foundations, both projects have enabled increased social infrastructure. To date, we have observed increased communication among community residents, facilitated the development of community-endorsed five-year plans, and established partnerships with regional and international groups

    Permeability and conductivity of platelet-reinforced membranes and composites

    We present large scale simulations of the diffusion constant DD of a random composite consisting of aligned platelets with aspect ratio a/b>>1a/b>>1 in a matrix (with diffusion constant D0D_0) and find that D/D0=1/(1+c1x+c2x2)D/D_0 = 1/(1+ c_1 x + c_2 x^2), where x=avf/bx= a v_f/b and vfv_f is the platelet volume fraction. We demonstrate that for large aspect ratio platelets the pair term (x2x^2) dominates suggesting large property enhancements for these materials.
