Alternating ditransitives in English: a corpus-based study

This thesis is a large-scale investigation of ditransitive constructions and their alternants in English. Typically both constructions involve three participants: participant A transfers an element B to participant C. A speaker can linguistically encode this type of situation in one of two ways: by using either a double object construction or a prepositional paraphrase. This study examines this syntactic choice in the British component of the International Corpus of English (ICE-GB), a fully tagged and parsed corpus incorporating both spoken and written English. After a general introduction, chapter 2 reviews the different grammatical treatments of the constructions. Chapter 3 discusses whether indirect objects have to be considered necessary complements or optional adjuncts of the verb. I then examine the tension between rigid classification and authentic (corpus) data in order to demonstrate that the distinction between complements and adjuncts evidences gradient categorisation effects. This study has both a linguistic and a methodological angle. The overall design and methodology employed in this study are discussed in chapter 4. The thesis considers a number of variables that help predict the occurrence of each pattern. The evaluation of the variables, the determination of their significance, and the measurement of their contribution to the model involve reliance on statistical methods (but not statistical software packages). Chapters 5, 6, and 7 review pragmatic factors claimed to influence a speaker’s choice of construction, among them the information status and the syntactic ‘heaviness’ of the constituents involved. The explanatory power and coverage of these factors are experimentally tested independently against the corpus data, in order to highlight several features which only emerge after examining authentic sources. Chapter 8 posits a novel method of bringing these factors together; the resulting model predicts the dative alternation with almost 80% accuracy in ICE-GB. Conclusions are offered in chapter 9

Adsorption of polyampholytes on charged surfaces

We have studied the adsorption of neutral polyampholytes on model charged surfaces that have been characterized by contact angle and streaming current measurements. The loop size distributions of adsorbed polymer chains have been obtained using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and compared to recent theoretical predictions. We find a qualitative agreement with theory; the higher the surface charge, the smaller the number of monomers in the adsorbed layer, in agreement with theory. We propose an original scenario for the adsorption of polyampholytes on surfaces covered with both neutral long-chain and charged short-chain thiols.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

Este artigo trata das versões em língua francesa, inglesa e portuguesa da Declaração Universal de Direitos do Homem (DUDH) de 1948, que constam nas páginas da web da ONU. Os termos empregados para qualificar o homemna Declaração(homme, everyonee “todo ser humano”) não são exatamente equivalentes de uma língua para a outra. As diferenças relativas à forma foram analisadas sob a ótica da Língua, do Direito, da História e da Tradução, bem como os aspectos históricos de sua elaboração, na tentativa de se encontrar uma resposta que fundamente as escolhas feitas no texto da Declaração, considerando também o tratamento dessas divergências na aplicação da regra nos diferentes sistemas jurídicos.This article deals with the French, English and Portuguese versions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 on the United Nationsweb pages. Em particular, o trabalho procura mostrar como a escalada de alta recente dos preços do petróleo não necessariamente gera maiores níveis de volatilidade desencadeando assim diferentes efeitos nas economias desenvolvidas, reforçando a hipótese de que seu preço não é simplesmente estabelecido de acordo com equilíbrio entre oferta e demanda. Sendo que o novo patamar de preços embute riscos, tanto macroeconômicos, como o impacto inflacionário e que as medidas necessárias para seu controle influenciam as expectativas dos agentes, afetando os investimentos e o próprio crescimento econômico, quanto uma possível substituição por uma matriz energética de combustível renovável futuramente

Análise da cadeia produtiva do feijão na região de União da Vitória - PR

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Economia.Neste estudo busca-se analisar o funcionamento da cadeia produtiva do feijão na região de União da Vitória - PR e as relações comerciais entre seus agentes. A partir do referencial teórico da Economia dos Custos de Transação - ECT, são discutidas as estratégias contratuais de suprimento e fornecimento dos elos que compõem a cadeia e atuam nos setores de insumos, máquinas e equipamentos, de produção de feijão, de beneficiamento e de distribuição e varejo. Primeiramente é desenvolvido um modelo para análise de relações contratuais em complexos agroindustriais. Parte-se, então, para uma descrição geral das relações existentes entre os participantes da cadeia produtiva do feijão na região estudada. Em seguida, procede-se, especificamente, à análise das transações dos fornecedores de insumos, máquinas e equipamentos com produtores rurais , desses com o setor de beneficiamento e desse com o segmento de distribuição e varejo. Esta análise busca entender os arranjos contratuais praticados no mercado do feijão a partir das características observadas nas transações. O objetivo da análise é mostrar se tais arranjos são minimizadores de custos de transação. Conclui-se que os contratos praticados não estão alinhados com os atributos das transações e sofrem de melhor coordenação, proporcionando ineficiência na cadeia e, ao mesmo tempo, abrindo oportunidades de investimento no setor de beneficiamento

Valency and transitivity in a contact variety: the evidence from Cameroon Pidgin English

We explore valency and transitivity patterns in Cameroon Pidgin English (cpe) from a language contact perspective, with particular focus on (a) lexical and (b) constructional phenomena. With respect to (a), many verbs of English origin surface in cpe with additional senses and valency properties to those they display in the lexifier, illustrating the drive towards polysemy in a language with a relatively small lexicon. We also describe category change, whereby English non-verbal expressions (typically adjectives) emerge as verbs in cpe. In terms of (b), verbs undergo valency changes as a consequence of participation in productive serial verb constructions. These constructions are built around a small set of high-frequency verbs, some of which also occur in the light verb construction, which represents another strategy for the creation of complex predicates.
