Impact and Perceived Benefits of a Problem-Based Learning Workshop for Continuing Education in Speech-Language Pathology: A Pilot Study
Even though speech-language pathologists (SLPs) must participate in continuing education programs, little is known about the effectiveness of these learning opportunities. This preliminary study provides empirical assessment of the impact of a problem-based learning (PBL) CE activity on SLPs as perceived by themselves and their Instructors. Twenty-five experienced SLPs participated in an intensive multi-day, PBL workshop on childhood apraxia of speech. Significant differences in the SLPs’ self-perceived clinical efficacy between T1 and T2, as well as T2 and T3. At T3, Instructors rated the clinical efficacy of the SLPs as “very good” to “excellent.” Qualitatively, SLPs reported increased confidence, critical thinking, and improved assessment/treatment skills following the training at T3. The SLPs also stated this workshop stood apart from other CE models due to the intensity of learning, the professionals and mentors available to them during and after the education experience, as well as instructional elements associated with PBL such as a focus on small group case-based discussion. Study limitations, implications and future directions are discussed
Multiservice QoS-Enabled MAC for Optical Burst Switching
The emergence of a broad range of network-driven applications (e.g., multimedia, online gaming) brings in the need for a network environment able to provide multiservice capabilities with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. In this paper, a medium access control protocol is proposed to support multiple services and QoS levels in optical burst-switched mesh networks without wavelength conversion. The protocol provides two different access mechanisms, queue-arbitrated and prearbitrated for connectionless and connection-oriented burst transport, respectively. It has been evaluated through extensive simulations and its simplistic form makes it very promising for implementation and deployment. Results indicate that the protocol can clearly provide a relative quality differentiation for connectionless traffic and guarantee null (or negligible, and thus acceptable) burst loss probability for a wide range of network (or offered) load while ensuring low access delay for the higher-priority traffic. Furthermore, in the multiservice scenario mixing connectionless and connection-oriented burst transmissions, three different prearbitrated slot scheduling algorithms are evaluated, each one providing a different performance in terms of connection blocking probability. The overall results demonstrate the suitability of this architecture for future integrated multiservice optical networks

Uncovering the hidden costs of offshoring: The interplay of complexity, organizational design, and experience
This study investigates estimation errors due to hidden costs—the costs of implementation that are neglected in strategic decision-making processes—in the context of services offshoring. Based on data from the Offshoring Research Network, we find that decision makers are more likely to make cost-estimation errors given increasing configuration and task complexity in captive offshoring and offshore outsourcing, respectively. Moreover, we show that experience and a strong orientation toward organizational design in the offshoring strategy reduce the cost-estimation errors that follow from complexity. Our findings contribute to research on the effectiveness of sourcing and global strategies by stressing the importance of organizational design and experience in dealing with increasing complexity
Large-Scale Agile Transformation: A Case Study of Transforming Business, Development and Operations
Today, product development organizations are adopting agile methods in units outside the software development unit, such as in sales, market, legal, operations working with the customer. This broader adoption of agile methods has been labeled large-scale agile transformation and is considered a particular type of organizational change, originating in the software development units. So far, there is little research-based advice on conducting such transformations. Aiming to contribute towards providing relevant research advice on large-scale agile transformation, we apply a research-based framework for evaluating organizational agility on a product development program in a maritime service provider organization. We found that doing a large-scale agile transformation involves many significant challenges, such as having a shared understanding of the problem, getting access to users, and getting commitment to change that needs to be done. Uukuniemi Phlebovirus Assembly and Secretion Leave a Functional Imprint on the Virion Glycome
Uukuniemi virus (UUKV) is a model system for investigating the genus Phlebovirus of the Bunyaviridae. We report the UUKV glycome, revealing differential processing of the Gn and Gc virion glycoproteins. Both glycoproteins display poly-N-acetyllactosamines, consistent with virion assembly in the medial Golgi apparatus, whereas oligomannose-type glycans required for DC-SIGN-dependent cellular attachment are predominant on Gc. Local virion structure and the route of viral egress from the cell leave a functional imprint on the phleboviral glycome
Use of the novel hemostatic textile Stasilon® to arrest refractory retroperitoneal hemorrhage: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Stasilon<sup>® </sup>is a novel hemostatic woven textile composed of allergen-free fibers of continuous filament fiberglass and bamboo yarn. The development of this product resulted from controlled <it>in vitro </it>thrombogenic analysis of an array of potentially hemostatic textile materials and it has been cleared for both external and internal use by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the arrest of hemorrhage. The goal of the study was to assess the hemostatic and adhesive properties of Stasilon<sup>® </sup>in the setting of life-threatening refractory hemorrhage.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 39-year-old Caucasian man presented with severe necrotic pancreatitis that failed multiple aggressive attempts to control associated bleeding with electrocautery, suture ligation, and sequential anatomic packing with cotton-based sponges. Subsequent retroperitoneal packing with Stasilon<sup>® </sup>produced a non-adherent wound-dressing interface and resulted in the achievement of persistent hemostasis in the operative field.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our patient, Stasilon<sup>® </sup>was demonstrated to be effective in the arrest of refractory hemorrhage.</p

A New Measurement of the Radiative Decay Width
High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for
photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, C and Pb, have
been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the
decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson
Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel
calorimeter. The decay width was extracted by
fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models
for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is . With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more
precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is
