    Pathological regional blood flow in opiate-dependent patients during withdrawal: A HMPAO-SPECT study

    The aims of the present study were to investigate regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in heroin-dependent patients during withdrawal and to assess the relation between these changes and duration of heroin consumption and withdrawal data. The rCBF was measured using brain SPECT with Tc-99m-HMPAO in 16 heroin-dependent patients during heroin withdrawal. Thirteen patients received levomethadone at the time of the SPECT scans. The images were analyzed both visually and quantitatively, a total of 21 hypoperfused brain regions were observed in 11 of the 16 patients. The temporal lobes were the most affected area, hypoperfusions of the right and left temporal lobe were observed in 5 and 5 patients, respectively. Three of the patients had a hypoperfusion of the right frontal lobe, 2 patients showed perfusion defects in the left frontal lobe, right parietal lobe and left parietal lobe. The results of the quantitative assessments of the rCBF were consistent with the results of the qualitative findings. The stepwise regression analysis showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.54) between the dose of levomethadone at the time of the SPECT scan and the rCBF of the right parietal lobe. Other significant correlations between clinical data and rCBF were not found. The present results suggest brain perfusion abnormalities during heroin withdrawal in heroin-dependent patients, which are not due to the conditions of withdrawal

    Bird surveys in grasslands: do different count methods present distinct results?

    We compared two methods routinely used to conduct bird community surveys: point counts and transects. Our aim was to look for differences between these two methods regarding detection of bird richness and abundances. Additionally, we analyzed if one of the methods provided higher correlation of bird data with vegetation structure as an important habitat descriptor. From September 2014 to January 2015, we surveyed birds in 264 point counts and 258 transects spread across the southern Brazilian grasslands. We conducted one method in direct sequence of the other, in the same place with the same observers and at the same weather conditions. We standardized data to eliminate the effort bias caused by area covered and time employed in each method. Total abundance of birds recorded by the two methods did not differ (point counts 4753 and transects 4436, P = 0.31), but we found a significant difference in species richness (point counts 187 and transects 173, P = 0.01). Abundance of birds sampled with the transect method showed a slightly higher correlation with vegetation height (r2 = 0.07; P = 0.004) than the point counts method (r2 = 0.03; P = 0.05). While results from both methods were similar, richness detection was more effective in point counts, indicating that this method might be more useful than it currently is. We discuss potential factors that may influence effectiveness of both methods and suggest issues that should be addressed in further research in order to develop standardized sampling methods for bird communities

    Coherent Versus Incoherent Ladar Detection at 2.09 ÎŒm

    A 2.09-ÎŒm ladar system is built to compare coherent to incoherent detection. The 2.09-ÎŒm wavelength is of interest because of its high atmospheric transmission and because it is eyesafe. The 2.09-ÎŒm system presented is capable of either a coherent or incoherent operational mode, is tunable in a small region around 2.09 ÎŒm, and is being used to look at the statistical nature of the ladar return pulses for typical glint and speckle targets. To compare coherent to incoherent detection the probability of detection is investigated as the primary performance criterion of interest. The probability of detection is dependent on both the probability of false alarm and the probability density function, representing the signal current output from the detector. These probability distributions are different for each detection technique and for each type of target. Furthermore, the probability of detection and the probability of false alarm are both functions of the dominating noise source(s) in the system. A description of the theoretical expectations of this system along with the setup of the ladar system and how it is being used to collect data for both coherent and incoherent detection is presented

    Coarse grained models of monolayers of amphiphiles (Langmuir monolayers) have been studied theoretically and by computer simulations. We discuss some of the insights obtained with this approach, and present new simulation results which show that idealised models can successfully reproduce essential aspects of the generic phase behaviour of Langmuir monolayers.Comment: To appear in J.     Small seed bank in grasslands and tree plantations in former grassland sites in the South Brazilian highlands

    The soil seed bank can be an important source for vegetation regeneration, and data on the similarity between aboveground vegetation and the seed bank can provide information about successional pathways after disturbances or land‐use change. We conducted this study in natural grasslands in the subtropical highland region in southern Brazil. We evaluated the effect of silviculture on richness, density, and composition of the seed bank at former grassland sites converted to pine plantations 25 years ago. We worked at six grassland sites and three pine plantation sites and used the seedling emergence method. Seed bank density and richness in grasslands were lower than those reported in similar environments in other regions. Species richness and density varied considerably within each vegetation type; therefore, richness and density were not statistically significant, while composition varied among vegetation types. In terms of species, the pine plantation seed bank was a small subset of the grassland seed bank. Seeds of typical grassland species were missing in the pine plantation, but also had only low abundances in the grassland, and similarity of seed bank and vegetation were low (less than 20%). The low seed density found in this study, including in grasslands areas, indicates that regeneration of species from the soil seed bank likely is of a limited role for the maintenance of plant populations after disturbances in this system. Our data further suggest that natural regeneration after tree planting in grasslands is reduced due to seed limitation

    Image-Based Scene Representations for Head-Motion Parallax in 360° Panoramas

    Creation and delivery of “RealVR” experiences essentially consists of the following four main steps: capture, processing, representation and rendering. In this chapter, we present, compare, and discuss two recent end-to-end approaches, Parallax360 by Luo et al. [9] and MegaParallax by Bertel et al. [3]. Both propose complete pipelines for RealVR content generation and novel-view synthesis with head-motion parallax for 360° environments.Parallax360 uses a robotic arm for capturing thousands of input views on the surface of a sphere. Based on precomputed disparity motion fields and pairwise optical flow, novel viewpoints are synthesized on the fly using flow-based blending of the nearest two to three input views which provides compelling head-motion parallax.MegaParallax proposes a pipeline for RealVR content generation and rendering that emphasizes casual, hand-held capturing. The approach introduces view-dependent flow-based blending to enable novel-view synthesis with head-motion parallax within a viewing area determined by the field of view of the input cameras and the capturing radius.We describe both methods and discuss their similarities and differences in corresponding steps in the RealVR pipeline and show selected results.     On the Application of a Monolithic Array for Detecting Intensity-Correlated Photons Emitted by Different Source Types

    It is not widely appreciated that many subtleties are involved in the accurate measurement of intensity-correlated photons; even for the original experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT). Using a monolithic 4x4 array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), together with an off-chip algorithm for processing streaming data, we investigate the difficulties of measuring second-order photon correlations g2 in a wide variety of light fields that exhibit dramatically different correlation statistics: a multimode He-Ne laser, an incoherent intensity-modulated lamp-light source and a thermal light source. Our off-chip algorithm treats multiple photon-arrivals at pixel-array pairs, in any observation interval, with photon fluxes limited by detector saturation, in such a way that a correctly normalized g2 function is guaranteed. The impact of detector background correlations between SPAD pixels and afterpulsing effects on second-order coherence measurements is discussed. These results demonstrate that our monolithic SPAD array enables access to effects that are otherwise impossible to measure with stand-alone detectors.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    Infinite-dimensional diffusions as limits of random walks on partitions

    The present paper originated from our previous study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. This problem leads to a family {P_z} of probability measures, the z-measures, which depend on the complex parameter z. The z-measures live on the Thoma simplex, an infinite-dimensional compact space which is a kind of dual object to the infinite symmetric group. The aim of the paper is to introduce stochastic dynamics related to the z-measures. Namely, we construct a family of diffusion processes in the Toma simplex indexed by the same parameter z. Our diffusions are obtained from certain Markov chains on partitions of natural numbers n in a scaling limit as n goes to infinity. These Markov chains arise in a natural way, due to the approximation of the infinite symmetric group by the increasing chain of the finite symmetric groups. Each z-measure P_z serves as a unique invariant distribution for the corresponding diffusion process, and the process is ergodic with respect to P_z. Moreover, P_z is a symmetrizing measure, so that the process is reversible. We describe the spectrum of its generator and compute the associated (pre)Dirichlet form.Comment: AMSTex, 33 pages.     Alveolar Echinococcosis of the Liver in an Adult with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 Infection

    Abstract. : We describe a patient with human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV) infection and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) with a focus on two messages. Despite being severely immunocompromised over years the patient exhibited a long-term asymptomatic course of AE. This is in clear contrast to reports describing accelerated courses of AE in immunocompromised patients. The patient had therapeutic mebendazole drug levels with only 1/10 of the normal drug dose. He was co-treated with protease inhibitors for his HIV infection. These drugs are known as strong inhibitors of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4)-dependent metabolism. We speculate that benzimidazoles and protease inhibitors interfere at the CYP3A4-level. The first report of co-infection of HIV and accelerated AE was in a young girl with an extremely low CD4 cell count and an abrogated lymphoproliferative responsiveness to parasite antigen stimulation. Since the CD4 cell count in our patient remained in the range of 27-150 cells/”l, we speculate that there was a critical threshold of immunosupression for constraining AE. Initial treatment with albendazole for AE added to the current highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART), and suppressive toxoplasmosis therapy became complicated by pancytopenia. After full recovery of the bone marrow, mebendazole was introduced with a new HAART and the previously prescribed toxoplasmosis maintenance therapy. Surprisingly, efficient mebendazole levels were achieved with an uncommonly low dose. These observations suggest that the benzimidazoles, albendazole and mebendazole, may interact with protease inhibitors, which are known for their strong inhibition of the CYP3A

    Chiral and herringbone symmetry breaking in water-surface monolayers

    We report the observation from monolayers of eicosanoic acid in the Lâ€Č2 phase of three distinct out-of-plane first-order diffraction peaks, indicating molecular tilt in a nonsymmetry direction and hence the absence of mirror symmetry. At lower pressures the molecules tilt in the direction of their nearest neighbors. In this region we find a structural transition, which we tentatively identify as the rotator-herringbone transition L2d−L2h
