Electrohydrodynamic deformation and rotation of a particle-coated drop
A dielectric drop suspended in conducting liquid and subjected to an uniform
electric field deforms into an ellipsoid whose major axis is either
perpendicular or tilted (due to Quincke rotation effect) relative to the
applied field. We experimentally study the effect of surface-adsorbed colloidal
particles on these classic electrohydrodynamic phenomena. We observe that at
high surface coverage (>90%), the electrohydrodynamic flow is suppressed,
oblate drop deformation is enhanced, and the threshold for tilt is decreased
compared to the particle-free drop. The deformation data are well explained by
a capsule model, which assumes that the particle monolayer acts as an elastic
interface. The reduction of the threshold field for rotation is likely related
to drop asphericity

Sediment erosion in flexible canopies by vortex impact
A model experiment with a vortex impacting a flexible canopy filled with a thin homogeneous bed of particles is presented. Flexibility of the filaments increases the efficiency of resuspension by the amount it allows the effective canopy-height to reduce due to the reconfiguration of the flexible structures. Scaling of the results with the effective canopy height leads to a collapse of the observed resuspension in the history of several successive impacts. It is further shown that preferential pathways in the canopy play a large role in resuspension. When comparing a hexagonal arrangement to a random arrangement of the filaments at the same average porosity, one needs to double the amount of impacts to achieve the same average resuspension. Hence, it is concluded that the random path of the particles around the filaments is affected in a non-linear manner by the local resistance. Regions of locally sparse arrangements of the filaments cannot balance the trapping effect of particles within regions of dense arrangement in their travel history. Flexibility of the filaments again proves a better resuspension under such conditions

Dynamic approches of energy markets : the effect of financialization
The object of this thesis is to study in a context of financialization of commodity markets, some strategies adopted by investors and their impact on volatility and excess co-movement between energy markets and financial markets. To this end, three studies are proposed. The first study uses the approach VAR with Switching Regime (MS-VAR) applied to energy markets during the period 1992-2017. The results suggest that during high volatility period, commercial agents (hedging agents) play a crucial role in the discovery of gas market prices. However, these agents affect the efficiency of other markets (crude oil, gasoline, heating oil) and amplify their volatilities. The second study employs GARCH ADCC versus GARCH DCC models for a sample of 17 countries and covering the period 1997-2016. This study highlights the asymmetric effect of oil shocks on the conditional correlations of the Asian and African markets, which can be explained in particular by the arbitrage activities and the heterogeneous behavior of investors. The third study focuses on Autoregressive Distributed Lag models (ARDL) and reveals that after the financial crisis, and beyond the macroeconomic and financial fundamentals, the index of excessive speculation, explains in long term as well as in short term, the correlation between oil market and some financial markets. This generates a phenomenon of excess co-movement, and therefore a financializing effect on these markets. Finally, we can conclude that : firstly, during high volatility period, gas market is a safe haven for financial investors ; secondly, the behavior of the investor explains the effect of excess co-movement between the oil market and some financial markets ; thirdly, this phenomenon of excess co-movement limits the benefits of international portfolio diversification especially during financial turbulences
We have studied experimentally the evolution of a particle bed submitted to a pipe flow. Depending on the experimental parameters, we have put in evidence five different regimes for the bed evolution : still particles, flat bed in motion, laminar dunes, vortex dunes and apparition of sinuous dunes. This work is divided into four main parts. After a qualitative study of the different regimes, we have studied the incipient motion of the particles. Particles at the surface of the bed can move as soon as hydrodynamic forces acting on them exceed a fraction of their apparent weight. This corresponds to a critical Shields number that we have found to be constant over a large range of small particle Reynolds number. We have used a two phase model with a solid friction rheology for the particle phase to describe the bed-load transport as well as the erodible-bed instability. Calculations are performed numerically but also analytically in asymptotic cases. The theorical bed load transport gives a good prediction of the flat bed temporal evolution and the predicted thresholds of laminar dunes formation, which corresponds to a constant Reynolds number, accounts reasonably well for the experimental observations. Finally, we present the different regimes of bed evolution in a phase diagram.

Sediment transport and dunes in pipe flow
International audienceWe propose a two-phase model having a Newtonian rheology for the fluid phase and friction for the particle phase to describe bed-load transport in laminar pipe flows. This model is able to provide a description of the flow of the mobile granular layer. When the flow is not significantly perturbed, simple analytical results of the particle flux varying cubically with the Shields number can be obtained. This prediction compares favorably with experimental observations of the time-evolution of the bed height in conditions of laminar flow. A simple linear stability analysis based on this particle flux also accounts reasonably well for the dune formation observed
Sediment dynamics. Part 2. Dune formation in pipe flow
International audienceWe present a phase diagram of the different dune patterns observed when a bed composed of spherical particles is subjected to a pipe flow. While the threshold for incipient motion is determined by the Shields number, that for dune formation seems to be controlled by the Reynolds number. A simple linear stability analysis based on a particle flux derived by Ouriemi, Aussillous & Guazzelli (J. Fluid Mech., 2009) accounts reasonably well for the experimental observations
