The main purpose for this work is to study the osmotic dehydration kinetics of potatoes (Solanum Tuberosum L.). Thus, a comparison of fitness for the experimental data related to the phenomenological kinetic model and Azuara’s model was made. When applying to 1 cm size potatoes cubes, effect of temperature (30 ºC, 40 ºC and 50ºC) on effective diffusivity coefficients for both water and solids was measured. Water weight loss and solids increase was determined. The highest water loss occurred at 50 º C. The different models kinetics parameters were calculated and a good fitness to mathematical respective relationships was obtained, both for water loss and solids increments. Furthermore, activation energy when applying Arrhenius equation was calculated, being higher for the diffusivity of solids gain.Fil: Silva Paz, Reynaldo Justino. Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. Ion-exchange resin as a new tool for characterisation of coordination compounds and MOFs by NMR spectroscopy

    Get PDF
1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy is used to investigate the organic constituents of metal complexes, MOFs and coordination compounds synthesised under solvothermal and precipitation conditions. The elucidation of the ligands in paramagnetic compounds bearing Cu2+(d9), Gd3+ (f7), Eu3+ (f6), Fe3+(d5), ions after treatment with a cationic exchange resin is possible. We prove the efficiency of two post-synthesis linker modifications on diamagnetic IRMOF-3 Zn2+ (d10) with ethyl isocyanate and benzyl bromide

An analysis has been performed to investigate the Monin-Obukhov Similarity Theory (MOST) validity in the atmospheric surfacelayer (ASL) above a rice field in a homogeneous area in Paraíso do Sul,RS. Statistical calculations have been applied to turbulent fluctuationsprojected on scales by means of the Wavelet Transform (WT). It hasbeen determined on which scales, physical factors such as surfaceroughness or local circulations occurrence, affect meteorological scalarfields (temperature, humidity and CO2 concentrations) measured withfast response devices installed in a tower, under different atmosphericstability and soil use conditions.

Interaction of chitosan and mucin in a biomembrane model environment

AbstractChitosans have been widely exploited in biological applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering, especially owing to their mucoadhesive properties, but the molecular-level mechanisms for the chitosan action are not known in detail. It is believed that chitosan could affect the mucus by interacting with the proteins mucins, in a process mediated by the cell membrane. In this study we used Langmuir monolayers of dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) as simplified membrane models to investigate the interplay between the activity of mucins and chitosan. Surface pressure and surface potential measurements were performed with DMPA monolayers onto which chitosan and/or mucin was adsorbed. We found that the expanding effect from mucin was considerably reduced when chitosan was injected after mucin had been adsorbed on the DMPA monolayer. The results were consistent with the formation of complexes between mucin and chitosan, thus highlighting the importance of electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, chitosan could remove mucin that was co-deposited along with DMPA in Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films, which could be ascribed to molecular-level interactions between chitosan and mucin inferred from the FTIR spectra of the LB films. In conclusion, the results with Langmuir and LB films suggest that electrostatic interactions are crucial for the mucoadhesive mechanism, which is affected by the complexation between chitosan and mucin

The genome assembly of Anopheles darlingi consists of 2221 scaffolds (N50 = 115,072 bp) and has a size spanning 136.94 Mbp. This assembly represents one of the smallest genomes among Anopheles species. Anopheles darlingi genomic DNA fragments of ~37 Kb were cloned, end-sequenced, and used as probes for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with salivary gland polytene chromosomes. In total, we mapped nine DNA probes to scaffolds and autosomal arms. Comparative analysis of the An. darlingi scaffolds with homologous sequences of the Anopheles albimanus and Anopheles gambiae genomes identified chromosomal rearrangements among these species. Our results confirmed that physical mapping is a useful tool for anchoring genome assemblies to mosquito chromosomes

25th APDR Congress “Circular Economy Urban Metabolism and Regular Development : Challenges for a Sustainable Future”, July 5-6, Lisboa (Portugal). O conhecimento do perfil do turista sénior, tendo em atenção as suas motivações, ajudará os agentes locais dos setores público e privado a adequarem a sua oferta turística.ABSTRACT: Tourism in the Azores has grown considerably since 2014, having increased over 20% in the last two years.
