Antechamber facilitates loading and unloading of vacuum furnace
Antechamber facilitates the use of a furnace in which materials are heat treated in a high vacuum or a gas atmosphere. It has a high vacuum pumping system, a means for backfilling with a selected gas, an access door, glove ports, and a motor driven platform
Interplanetary propulsion using inertial fusion
Inertial fusion can be used to power spacecraft within the solar system and beyond. Such spacecraft have the potential for short-duration manned-mission performance exceeding other technologies. We are conducting a study to assess the systems aspects of inertial fusion as applied to such missions, based on the conceptual engine design of Hyde (1983) we describe the required systems for an entirely new spacecraft design called VISTA that is based on the use of DT fuel. We give preliminary design details for the power conversion and power conditioning systems for manned missions to Mars of total duration of about 100 days. Specific mission performance results will be published elsewhere, after the study has been completed
A High Precision Study of the QQ(bar) Potential from Wilson Loops in the Regime of String Breaking
For lattice QCD with two sea quark flavours we compute the static quark
antiquark potential V(R) in the regime where string breaking is expected. In
order to increase statistics, we make full use of the lattice information by
including all lattice vectors R to any possible lattice separation in the
infrared regime. The corresponding paths between the lattice points are
constructed by means of a generalized Bresenham algorithm as known from
computer graphics. As a results we achieve a determination of the unquenched
potential in the range .8 to 1.5 fm with hitherto unknown precision.
Furthermore, we demonstrate some error reducing methods for the evaluation of
the transition matrix element between two- and four-quark states.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Vacuum energy in the presence of a magnetic string with delta function profile
We present a calculation of the ground state energy of massive spinor fields
and massive scalar fields in the background of an inhomogeneous magnetic string
with potential given by a delta function. The zeta functional regularization is
used and the lowest heat kernel coefficients are calculated. The rest of the
analytical calculation adopts the Jost function formalism. In the numerical
part of the work the renormalized vacuum energy as a function of the radius
of the string is calculated and plotted for various values of the strength of
the potential. The sign of the energy is found to change with the radius. For
both scalar and spinor fields the renormalized energy shows no logarithmic
behaviour in the limit , as was expected from the vanishing of the heat
kernel coefficient , which is not zero for other types of profiles.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figure
Making CGIAR outputs open and accessible: The CGSpace collaboration
In recent years, CGIAR centres and research programs have moved towards open access as part of commitments to make CGIAR information products widely accessible. These efforts span a wide variety of activities including adoption of policies, awareness raising, using open licenses and establishing ope n access repositories for products as well as data. This article explains the origins, operation and uses of the CGSpace repository set up in 2009 by the International Livestock Research Institute with several partners. Starting from an “institutional” eff ort, it has evolved into a collaboration among dozens of programs and entities, pooling technical efforts and generating collective public goods for the wider agricultural world. This article covers the CGSpace and open access value proposition, technical developments and choices, content management and standards, use and update, metrics and reach, as well as lessons and promising practices for wider us

Flavour singlet pseudoscalar masses in N_f = 2 QCD
We perform a lattice mass analysis in the flavour singlet pseudoscalar
channel on the SESAM and TXL full QCD vacuum configurations, with 2 active
flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions at beta = 5.6. At our inverse lattice
spacing, a^-1 = 2.3 GeV, we retrieve by a chiral extrapolation to the physical
light quark masses the value m_eta' = 3.7(+8)(-4) m_pi. A crude extrapolation
from (N_f = 3) phenomenology would suggest m_eta' \approx 5.1 m_pi for N_f = 2
QCD. we verify that the mass gap between the singlet state eta' and the pi
flavour triplt state is due to gauge configurations with non-trivial topology.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

Imaging Pressure, Cells and Light Fields
Imaging systems often make use of macroscopic lenses to manipulate light. Modern microfabrication techniques, however, have opened up a pathway to the development of novel arrayed imaging systems. In such systems, centimeter-scale areas can contain thousands to millions of micro-scale optical elements, presenting exciting opportunities for new imaging applications. We show two such applications in this thesis: pressure sensing in microfluidics and high throughput fluorescence microscopy for high content screening. Conversely, we show that arrayed elements are not always needed for three dimensional light field imaging.Engineering and Applied Science
