Tunable entanglement distillation of spatially correlated down-converted photons
We report on a new technique for entanglement distillation of the bipartite
continuous variable state of spatially correlated photons generated in the
spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC), where tunable
non-Gaussian operations are implemented and the post-processed entanglement is
certified in real-time using a single-photon sensitive electron multiplying CCD
(EMCCD) camera. The local operations are performed using non-Gaussian filters
modulated into a programmable spatial light modulator and, by using the EMCCD
camera for actively recording the probability distributions of the
twin-photons, one has fine control of the Schmidt number of the distilled
state. We show that even simple non-Gaussian filters can be finely tuned to a
~67% net gain of the initial entanglement generated in the SPDC process.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Improvement of scanning tunneling microscopy resolution with H-sensitized tips
Recent scanning tunneling hydrogen microscopy (STHM) experiments on PTCDA (perylene-3,4,9,10- tetracarboxylic-3,4,9,10-dianhydride)/Au(111) have shown unprecedented intramolecular and intermolecular spatial resolution. The origin of this resolution is studied using an accurate STHM theoretical simulation technique that includes a detailed description of the electronic structure of both the tip and sample. Our results show that H2 molecules are dissociated on the Au tip; the adsorbed H atoms change the density of states at the Fermi level (EF) of the tip, increasing its p-orbital character and reducing the s-orbital contribution. Also, due to the interaction with the H-decorated tip, EF is shifted to the middle of the PTCDA lowest unoccupied molecular orbital peak, increasing dramatically the density of states of the sample at EF. These effects give rise to the enhanced STHM resolutionThis work is supported by Spanish MICIIN under Contract No. FIS2010-16046, the CAM under Contract No. S2009/MAT-1467, and the European Project MINOTOR (Grant No. FP7-NMP-228424). Census of HII regions in NGC 6754 derived with MUSE: Constraints on the metal mixing scale
We present a study of the HII regions in the galaxy NGC 6754 from a two
pointing mosaic comprising 197,637 individual spectra, using Integral Field
Spectrocopy (IFS) recently acquired with the MUSE instrument during its Science
Verification program. The data cover the entire galaxy out to ~2 effective
radii (re ), sampling its morphological structures with unprecedented spatial
resolution for a wide-field IFU. A complete census of the H ii regions limited
by the atmospheric seeing conditions was derived, comprising 396 individual
ionized sources. This is one of the largest and most complete catalogue of H ii
regions with spectroscopic information in a single galaxy. We use this
catalogue to derive the radial abundance gradient in this SBb galaxy, finding a
negative gradient with a slope consistent with the characteristic value for
disk galaxies recently reported. The large number of H ii regions allow us to
estimate the typical mixing scale-length (rmix ~0.4 re ), which sets strong
constraints on the proposed mechanisms for metal mixing in disk galaxies, like
radial movements associated with bars and spiral arms, when comparing with
simulations. We found evidence for an azimuthal variation of the oxygen
abundance, that may be related with the radial migration. These results
illustrate the unique capabilities of MUSE for the study of the enrichment
mechanisms in Local Universe galaxies.Comment: 13 pages, 7 Figurs, accepted for publishing in A&

Assessing the trophic ecology of the invasive Atlantic Blue Crab Callinectes sapidus in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Cadiz
Callinectes sapidus, the invasive blue crab from the west of the Atlantic Ocean, has extended its distribution along the Atlantic coast around the Gulf of Cadiz and increased massively since 2016. Food web studies are useful for understanding changes in ecosystems caused by exotic species. Stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) were used to assess the potential carbon sources and its trophic relationships among different ecosystems (estuaries and saltmarshes), sexes (male and females) and seasons (summer vs. autumn). Significant differences were found in the δ13C of blue crabs from the estuaries and salt-marshes (-21.2 ±2.6 vs -14.2 ±0.9, respectively). These differences may be explained by an increase in the 13C of the blue crabs from the salt-marshes, probably due to the enrichment of this isotope in the primary producers such as the salt marsh plants [1] and its preys inhabiting this ecosystem. Meanwhile, the more depleted 13C values in the estuary crabs seem to reflect a carbon source from mollusks and fish derived from decomposing detritus. Among the ecosystems analyzed, δ15N was only significantly enriched in the crabs of the Guadalquivir estuary and was higher in males than females. Also, seasonal differences were found in this estuary in both sexes, by a decrease in the 15N values between summer and autumn. Those differences, can be explained by the fact that the Guadalquivir estuary suffers nitrogen hyper-nitrification due to intensive agriculture and is more noticeable in the upper part of the estuary, to which the males are more associated due to their life cycle. Previous studies reported, the diet of C. sapidus seems to be opportunistic, dependent on the food availability in different habitats [2], with a divergence in sexes induced by different spatial distributions. Future studies analyzing the stomach content and trophic behavior should be conducted to clarify our results
Structural Characterization of Linear Three-Dimensional Random Chains: Energetic Behaviour and Anisotropy
In this work, we will make an energetic and structural characterization of three-dimensional linear chains generated from a simple self-avoiding random walk process in a finite time, without boundary conditions, without the need to explore all possible configurations. From the analysis of the energy balance between the terms of interaction and bending (or correlation), it is shown that the chains, during their growth process, initially tend to form clusters, leading to an increase in their interaction and bending energies. Larger chains tend to “escape” from the cluster when they reach a number of “steps” N>∼1040 , resulting in a decrease in their interaction energy, however, maintaining the same behavior as flexion energy or correlation. This behavior of the bending term in the energy allows distinguishing chains with the same interaction energy that present different structures. As a complement to the energy analysis, we carry out a study based on the moments of inertia of the chains and their radius of gyration. The results show that the formation of clusters separated by “tails” leads to a final “prolate” structure for this type of chain, the same structure evident in real polymeric linear chains in a good solvent
