Variation in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) catches related to El Niño-Southern Oscillation events at the entrance to the Gulf of California
Fishery catch data on yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) were examined to study the effects of El Niño events between 1990 and 1999 for an area in the northeastern tropical Pacific (18−24°N, 112−104°W). The data were extracted from a database of logbook records from the Mexican tuna purse-seine f leet. Latitudinal distribution of the catches increased from south to north for the 10-year period. Highest catches and effort were concentrated between 22°N and 23°N. This area accumulated 48% of the total catch over the 10year period. It was strongly correlated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. At least two periods of exceptionally high catches occurred following El Niño events in 1991 and 1997. Peaks of catches were triggered by the arrival of positive anomalies of sea surface temperature (SST) to the area. A delay of two to four months was observed between the occurrence of maximum SST anomalies at the equator and peaks of catch. Prior to these two events, negative SST anomalies were the dominant feature in the study area and catch was extremely low. This trend of negative SST anomalies with low catches followed by positive SST anomalies and high catches may be attributed to northward yellowfin tuna migration patterns driven by El Niño forcing, a result that contrasts with the known behavior of decreasing relative abundance of these tuna after El Niño events in the eastern Pacific. However, this decrease in relative abundance may be the result of a local or subregional effect

A comprehensive study of protein-mesoporous-macroporous silica interactions by extended canonical variate analysis of Raman spectra
Understanding the protein-support interactions is of major importance when manufacturing bionanomaterials to a certain application. These interactions can be the cause for enhanced properties or denaturation phenomena in the target protein. Raman spectroscopy was applied to a bionanomaterial comprehending the protein beta-galactosidase immobilized by physical adsorption into a mesoporous-macroporous silica material, with a nanoporous network consisting of 9-nm mesopores and 200-nm macropores. Raman spectra of the bionanomaterial evidenced a complex amount of differences related to the Raman shifts, intensities, band enlargement, appearance of new bands, and overlapping, in comparison with the silica support and the protein spectra. To help in the analysis of the Raman spectra and in the inspection of possible protein-support interactions, ECVA (extended canonical variate analysis) was used as a chemometric complementary tool, dividing the spectra into four segments: 1 (3,100 to 2,800 cm(-1)), 2 (1,800 to 1,500 cm(-1)), 3 (1,500 to 1,200 cm(-1)), and 4 (1,200 to 900 cm(-1)). Major alterations in the Amide I band (1,800 to 1,500 cm(-1)) and the amino acid band regions demonstrated possible structure alterations to a non-native form of the protein beta-galactosidase. Also, other minor alterations were observed in other spectral regions (3,100 to 2,800 cm(-1),1,500 to 1,200 cm(-1), and 1,200 to 900 cm(-1)) also representative of protein structure alteration due to protein-support interactions

Bioinformatics as a Tool for the Structural and Evolutionary Analysis of Proteins
This chapter deals with the topic of bioinformatics, computational, mathematics, and statistics tools applied to biology, essential for the analysis and characterization of biological molecules, in particular proteins, which play an important role in all cellular and evolutionary processes of the organisms. In recent decades, with the next generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatics, it has facilitated the collection and analysis of a large amount of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data from different organisms that have allowed predictions on the regulation of expression, transcription, translation, structure, and mechanisms of action of proteins as well as homology, mutations, and evolutionary processes that generate structural and functional changes over time. Although the information in the databases is greater every day, all bioinformatics tools continue to be constantly modified to improve performance that leads to more accurate predictions regarding protein functionality, which is why bioinformatics research remains a great challenge
The Extra Virgin Olive Oil phenolic compounds () oleacein and () oleocanthal inhibit tumor cell autophagy
Our group has recently shown that the antitumor Extra Virgin Olive Oil phenolic compounds (—)oleocanthal and (—)oleacein
also behave as antiangiogenic agents. Interestingly, it has been described that phenolic compounds found in the Mediterranean diet affect the autophagy pathway. Based on this background, we studied the modulatory effects of (—)oleocanthal and (—)oleacein on tumor cell autophagy. Methodologically, the tumor cell lines MDAMB231, MCF7 and HT1080 cell lines were used in in vitro cellular and molecular studies of the autophagy flux and key mediators of this process, and High Content Screening (HCS) System using Perkin Elmer Operetta for single-cell analysis was performed in these cells. Interestingly, (—)oleocanthal and (—)oleacein repressed the autophagy flux of MDAMB231 and MCF7 submitted to autophagy inducing conditions (severe starving) at doses in the low micromolar range. In addition, key autophagy mediators, like LC3 or WIPI2 proteins, were dramatically reduced in the same settings, as seen in immunohistochemical studies. Furthermore, preliminary results of HCS in tumor cells revealed depletory effects on autophagy by using specifics dyes for this process at the single-cell level. Altogether, our results point to a drastic inhibitory effect of (—)oleocanthal and (—)oleacein on tumor cell autophagy at low doses.[Grants: PID2022-138181OB-I00, PID2019-105010RB-I00 and RTI2018-098560-BC22 (Spanish Government), UMA18-FEDERJA-220, and PY20_00257 (Andalusian Government and FEDER). 3D internal reconstruction of the case study. Laboratory Investigations
11 páginas; 8 figurasThe main objective of the Heritage Within (HWITHIN) research
project is to investigate what is hidden to our naked eye. One of the
core actions of the project was to explore the use of Ground Penetrating
Radar (GPR) and ultrasonic acoustic tomography to document and
reconstruct precisely the interior of the constructive elements, almost
on a stone-by-stone basis. However, precisely because it is not visible,
the results obtained and the conclusions drawn cannot be verified with
the reality.
In the case of the Carmo Convent, the structural elements under
investigations are the neogothic compound piers of the main nave,
reconstructed after the 1755 earthquake. There is insufficient
information on the layout of the interior morphology of the pillar’s
cross-section. Additionally, finding relatable examples to compare to
the compound pillars at the Carmo Convent are quite minimal, making
it complicated for even initial assumptions to be established.
Therefore, the team decided to construct 1:1 stone replicas of parts
of the neogothic stone masonry pillars (the shaft and the pedestal).
The specimens were used to assess the feasibility and efficiency of
the non-destructive tests applied (GPR and acoustic tomography) to
determine the layout of their internal morphology. Since the cross-
section of the real pillars of the Carmo Convent is unknown, the replica
only precisely depicts the exterior layout of the columns. The shapes
of the stones were established on initial guesses based on literature
review. Once the limestones were cut, several cross-sectional set-ups
were prepared, mainly accounting for a wide range of possible interior
core materials (from fully empty core to a solid limestone block filling).
Acoustic tomography was carried out for each assembly so that accurate
comparisons between the tomographic maps could be made. Moreover,
given the known inner composition of the laboratory specimens,
the results can help to understand the potential of the tomographic
techniques by comparing the results with the expected visible interior.
The present chapter shows some of the results obtained during the
laboratory investigations, which were essential to interpret the ultrasonic
tomography performed on-site at the old convent. The results confirm
the potential of acoustic tomography techniques to convey an accurate
idea of the cross-sectional elements within the pillar. The tomographic
maps may not provide enough precision to determine exact dimensions
of the materials and elements within the cross-section, but they can
be complemented with GPR investigations and is always useful in a
qualitative way, as it can provide information about the structural
integrity of the materials and their arrangement. This publication shows the results of the Heritage Within (HWITHIN)

PregradoMedic
