A Small Open Economy Model with Currency Mismactches and a Financial Accelerator Mechanism

We develop a two-sectors small open economy model with imperfect competition, one-period nominal price rigidities and a financial accelerator mechanism. The latter assumes an asymmetric information problem between lenders and capital good producers (entrepreneurs). Studying the zero-inflation steady state, it is shown that the model with the financial accelerator mechanism nests a fairly standard RBC model; case in which entrepreneurs “disappear" as a differentiated sector from households. It is also explained that credit market imperfections essentially reduce the aggregate supply of capital relative to the RBC case. Turning to the dynamics, we study the effects of an unanticipated and permanent increase in the level of the money supply. In this context the exchange rate jumps immediately to its new steady state level without showing any overshooting process as in Dornbusch (1976). Analysing the case without credit market imperfections but with pre-set prices, it is demonstrated that money is not neutral in the long-run, that capital adds persistence to the initial shock, and that some traditional results of the Mundell-Fleming model still hold.Credit Market Imperfections, Financial Accelerator, Currency Mismatches, Currency Depreciation.

Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria Biomèdica. Facultat de Medicina i Ciències de la Salut. Universitat de Barcelona. Curs: 2023-2024. Tutor: Raúl Tudela ; Director: Aida Niñerola, Raúl TudelaTauopathies are neurodegenerative diseases caused by the abnormal accumulation of tau proteins in the brain. One uncommon tauopathy is progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), whose symptoms often overlap with other brain disorders, and its detection is only possible postmortem since there is not an available ideal biomarker. PET-tau imaging has the potential to revolutionize the early detection of this disease. PET is a nuclear imaging test which allows seeing the functionality of organs and tissues in vivo using a radiotracer that emits radiation from inside the body. A new PET tracer called 18F-PI-2620 has shown promising results concerning the detection of PSP, with high affinity to tau aggregates and low off-target binding. This project consists of designing and testing a software for the quantification of PET images of the brain with a dynamic acquisition, which show the radiotracer distribution through time. The software performs a coregistration of the images to the standard space, where the different regions of the brain can be segmented using an atlas, and provides two physiologically meaningful parameters which are the Distribution Volume Ratio (DVR) and Standardized Uptake Value Ratio (SUVR). It gives out the DVR and SUVR values for any region of interest, as well as parametric images which help visualizing the radiotracer distribution in the brain. A set of brain PET images from 13 subjects acquired using 18F-PI-2620 has been used for the development and testing of the software, divided into healthy controls, subjects with Down syndrome, some of whom have developed Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which also implies a higher amount of abnormal deposited tau proteins. The results have shown higher DVR and SUVR values for several brain regions in those subjects who have developed AD, confirming that they have a higher radiotracer uptake and a greater amount of deposited tau proteins. This proves the correct functionality of the software and its potential as a future tool for detecting tauopathies such as PSP in combination with the radiotracer

Inland surface waters are easily contaminated so it is convenient to know the environmental status to detect aggression and provide knowledge for preservation. The Parana River, one of the main components of the River Plate Basin, receives input from numerous rivers and streams along its course. In the Medium Paraná River on its left margin, the Ensenada stream ends, located in the Diamante Department, province of Entre Ríos. This work objective is to increase the information about the status of the waters of the stream basin considering samples obtained during two well differentiated thermal seasons in 2010. Samplings were made in nine sites of the course and tributary streams and were analyzed by standard methods, in their physical-chemical and microbiological parameters. The results show that the physical-chemical parameters such as pH, EC and chlorophyll "a" are in ranges comparable with other courses in the region, but not with phosphorus in the main course, with higher values showing the effects of human activities in the basin. The high values of total coliform count as well as thermotolerants, mostly found in the tributaries, exceed the limits for recreational waters. Cluster analysis applied to the set of physical-chemical parameters showed the formation of five clusters in two seasons, with the forming of two tributaries that were characterized by high contents of phosphorus. The analysis of cyanobacteria showed presence of Microcystis genus that can affect the quality of recreational and consumption water, with non significant values of cyanotoxins.Fil: Vivot, Eduardo Pedro. Green Hydrogen Production Projects and their development in Spain

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to describe how a renewable energy project is developed. The work is based on the experiences of a writer working in a company executing renewable energy and hydrogen projects. In the theory part, regulations supporting green hydrogen production are introduced, and the state-of-the-art of hydrogen production technologies is outlined. Introduction to the technology’s history and the different uses of hydrogen demonstrate the wide range of its applications. Decarbonizing the power sector through green hydrogen production is essential for the plans of Europe becoming the first Climate Neutral Continent. Entities created for supporting the hydrogen production technology such as the Hydrogen Council and the European Hydrogen Bank are included as supporters of the hydrogen European plans. Metallurgy and fertilizers production sectors are the ones foreseen as the main benefactors of adapting their systems into working with hydrogen produced through renewable energies. These sectors are also seen as two of the main drivers for decarbonizing the hard-to-abate sectors, accounting for more than 50% of hydrogen consumption. The experimental part describes the process of executing hydrogen projects, including the regulatory requirements for hydrogen projects. These include grid connections permit, building permit, application for administrative approval and environmental impact assessment. The environmental impacts must be especially carefully considered, including endangered species, water access and also conservation of historic sites. In the discussion, some examples of relevant hydrogen production and transportation projects are introduced, highlighting the importance site selection has. Projects such as HyDeal and H2Med pave the road for decarbonizing the gas sector in Europe, raising Spain as one of the most important potential exporters of hydrogen in Europe. The discussion highlights that environmental regulations will need to be rigorously followed, as they will determine the success of a project. Finally, the conclusions outline recommendations and future research needs. It is suggested that creating markets for green hydrogen are critical to support the role of hydrogen in future energy system. As well, further investments will be needed in technological research, in order to improve the reliability and efficiency of hydrogen production technologies

White Matter Abnormalities Track Disease Progression in PSEN1 Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer's Disease

PSEN1 mutations are the most frequent cause of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD), and show nearly full penetrance. There is presently increasing interest in the study of biomarkers that track disease progression in order to test therapeutic interventions in ADAD. We used white mater (WM) volumetric characteristics and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics to investigate correlations with the normalized time to expected symptoms onset (relative age ratio) and group differences in a cohort of 36 subjects from PSEN1 ADAD families: 22 mutation carriers, 10 symptomatic (SMC) and 12 asymptomatic (AMC), and 14 non-carriers (NC). Subjects underwent a 3T MRI. WM morphometric data and DTI metrics were analyzed. We found that PSEN1 MC showed significant negative correlation between fractional anisotropy (FA) and the relative age ratio in the genus and body of corpus callosum and corona radiate (p <  0.05 Family-wise error correction (FWE) at cluster level) and positive correlation with mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AxD), and radial diffusivity (RD) in the splenium of corpus callosum. SMC presented WM volume loss, reduced FA and increased MD, AxD, and RD in the anterior and posterior corona radiate, corpus callosum (p <  0.05 FWE) compared with NC. No significant differences were observed between AMC and NC in WM volume or DTI measures. These findings suggest that the integrity of the WM deteriorates linearly in PSEN1 ADAD from the early phases of the disease; thus DTI metrics might be useful to monitor the disease progression. However, the lack of significant alterations at the preclinical stages suggests that these indexes might not be good candidates for early markers of the disease
