An alternative derivation of the gravitomagnetic clock effect

    Get PDF
The possibility of detecting the gravitomagnetic clock effect using artificial Earth satellites provides the incentive to develop a more intuitive approach to its derivation. We first consider two test electric charges moving on the same circular orbit but in opposite directions in orthogonal electric and magnetic fields and show that the particles take different times in describing a full orbit. The expression for the time difference is completely analogous to that of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic clock effect in the weak-field and slow-motion approximation. The latter is obtained by considering the gravitomagnetic force as a small classical non-central perturbation of the main central Newtonian monopole force. A general expression for the clock effect is given for a spherical orbit with an arbitrary inclination angle. This formula differs from the result of the general relativistic calculations by terms of order c^{-4}.Comment: LaTex2e, 11 pages, 1 figure, IOP macros. Submitted to Classical and Quantum Gravit

Proposed magneto-electrostatic ring trap for neutral atoms

    Get PDF
We propose a novel trap for confining cold neutral atoms in a microscopic ring using a magneto-electrostatic potential. The trapping potential is derived from a combination of a repulsive magnetic field from a hard drive atom mirror and the attractive potential produced by a charged disk patterned on the hard drive surface. We calculate a trap frequency of [29.7, 42.6, 62.8] kHz and a depth of [16.1, 21.8, 21.8] MHz for [133Cs, 87Rb, 40K], and discuss a simple loading scheme and a method for fabrication. This device provides a one-dimensional potential in a ring geometry that may be of interest to the study of trapped quantum degenerate one-dimensional gases.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; revised, including new calculations and further discussio

    Get PDF
Blue Bell Creameries faced an unprecedented situation when it pulled all of its products during a Listeria outbreak in 2015. Despite a very public crisis that resulted in three deaths, Blue Bell survived the disaster and maintained a large and loyal customer base. A content analysis of the Blue Bell Ice Cream Facebook page was conducted to evaluate Blue Bell’s public communications, and its followers’ public reactions to the Facebook communication during the crisis. Results indicated that Blue Bell primarily posted messages that included recall and restocking information, thankfulness to stakeholders, and details about improvements to food safety during the crisis. These messages created a sense of transparency, which can increase customers’ trust and brand loyalty. Their consumers largely responded with comments containing overwhelming loyalty themes as well as questions and messages of thanks. Recommendations for agri-food companies include operating transparently before, during, and after a crisis. Organizations should follow Blue Bell’s example and avoid publishing messages that include attacks, denial, scapegoating, or excuses during a crisis

Agri-Science Faculty Perceptions of Communication Activities at Texas Tech University, a Non-Land-Grant Institution

Due to the direct impact science has on society, it is important for scientists to communicate with the general public (Rose et al., 2020). There are various means of communication that scientists may choose to disseminate their research. Recently, Bowman et al. (2018) assessed how often Extension personnel at a land-grant institution used various communication skills, how important they perceived each skill to be, and how comfortable they were performing them. Land-grant institutions have different communication expectations for their faculty than those at non-land-grant institutions. Therefore, this study focused on the Use, Comfort, and Importance of communication skills according to faculty members at a non-land-grant university. Survey data were collected from 57 (N = 57) faculty members at Texas Tech University, a non-land-grant institution, within its College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Average Use, Comfort, and Importance scores were calculated for each communication skill and categorized as high, average, or low. These scores indicated whether the faculty members at this non-land-grant institution had adopted each communication skill according to Rogers’ Innovation Diffusion Process

Neutron reflection interferometry: physical principles of surface analysis with phase information

    Get PDF
It is shown that the analysis of surface layers by neutron reflection interferometry is considerably enhanced by performing the reflectometry with phase information. We discuss two methods of providing such information. One method involves physically adding an extra reference layer, whose amplitude and phase are known theoretically. The other uses the Lloyd\u27s mirror configuration, in which a directly propagating ray that interferes with the reflected ray supplies the phase information. The methods have much in common with holography

Manipulation Tactics in Romantic Relationships, Emotional Intelligence and Attachment to Love Partner

    Get PDF
Manipulation is present in our everyday life more than most people notice; from managing of inanimate objects to deliberate influence on the behavior and emotions of people with whom we enter into relations. A romantic relationship represents one of the most important long term relationships in a person's life. Thereby to achieve a close partnership, individuals are undergoing the process of selection, attraction and retention of the partner. Each one of these phases opens an opportunity to use manipulation to ensure success. Since the use of manipulation may have a negative impact on the partners psychological well-being, it is of great relevance to provide a better understanding of the concept and correlates of manipulation. The aim of this study was therefore to explore the relationship of manipulation tactics and emotional manipulation with emotional intelligence and dimensions of attachment in romantic relationship. The study was conducted on 168 participants (53 pairs and 62 participants whose partners did not participate) with average age of 23 years. Scales used in the study were general information questionnaire, Modified Tactics of Manipulation Scale (Tactics of manipulation; Buss, 1992), Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45; Takšić, 2002), Modified Emotional Manipulation Scale (EMS; Austin et al., 2007) and Modified Brenann's Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (Kamenov and Jelić, 2003). The results showed that females tendency to emotional manipulation in relationships is correlated with willingness to use direct and indirect tactics for humouring and coercion in romantic relationships. Moreover, avoidance of intimacy in romantic relationships negatively correlated with the use of indirect tactics of coercion, while anxiety positively correlated with the use of indirect tactics for humouring. The results also confirmed that males tendency to use emotional manipulation is corellated with a higher degree of emotional intelligence. In addition, men who scored higher on emotional intelligence are prone to managing the emotional state of others more than men who achieve lower scores on emotional intelligence and women, regardless of their emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the results indicate that partners who differ more in emotional intelligence and anxiety, differ more in their affinity to use indirect tactics for humouring, compared to partners who are more similar to each other on those variables

Do touch that dial: A guide to continuous response measurement in agricultural communications

    Get PDF
As the gap in agricultural experiences between farmers and consumers grow, it is important for agricultural communicators to communicate strategically with their audiences and be proactive in addressing consumers’ concerns. Communication media can present a variety of messages or pieces of information that represent multiple perspectives within one unit. The dynamic nature of communication media, such as video and audio messages, lead to the fluctuation of feelings and responses to different elements within one singular message. While agricultural communications has traditionally relied upon quantitative and qualitative survey data, there are likely gaps in complete understandings of individual perceptions in response to varying elements of the communications message. Continuous response measurement (CRM) is a method that can be used to monitor and track individual responses to media messages in real-time to reveal critical moments within a communications message. CRM holds the potential to help those in agricultural communications understand what specific elements within messages resonate most with consumers. This professional paper explores how researchers can use CRM, showcases benefits and drawbacks of CRM, and provides recommendations for contributions to agricultural communications literature
