The Phoenix Deep Survey: The 1.4 GHz microJansky catalogue
The initial Phoenix Deep Survey (PDS) observations with the Australia
Telescope Compact Array have been supplemented by additional 1.4 GHz
observations over the past few years. Here we present details of the
construction of a new mosaic image covering an area of 4.56 square degrees, an
investigation of the reliability of the source measurements, and the 1.4 GHz
source counts for the compiled radio catalogue. The mosaic achieves a 1-sigma
rms noise of 12 microJy at its most sensitive, and a homogeneous radio-selected
catalogue of over 2000 sources reaching flux densities as faint as 60 microJy
has been compiled. The source parameter measurements are found to be consistent
with the expected uncertainties from the image noise levels and the Gaussian
source fitting procedure. A radio-selected sample avoids the complications of
obscuration associated with optically-selected samples, and by utilising
complementary PDS observations including multicolour optical, near-infrared and
spectroscopic data, this radio catalogue will be used in a detailed
investigation of the evolution in star-formation spanning the redshift range 0
< z < 1. The homogeneity of the catalogue ensures a consistent picture of
galaxy evolution can be developed over the full cosmologically significant

Accurate prediction of core-level spectra of radicals at density functional theory cost via square gradient minimization and recoupling of mixed configurations
State-specific orbital optimized approaches are more accurate at predicting
core-level spectra than traditional linear-response protocols, but their
utility had been restricted on account of the risk of `variational collapse'
down to the ground state. We employ the recently developed square gradient
minimization (SGM, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 16, 1699-1710, 2020) algorithm to
reliably avoid variational collapse and study the effectiveness of orbital
optimized density functional theory (DFT) at predicting second period element
1s core-level spectra of open-shell systems. Several density functionals
(including SCAN, B3LYP and B97X-D3) are found to predict excitation
energies from the core to singly occupied levels to high accuracy ( eV
RMS error), against available experimental data. Higher excited states are
however more challenging by virtue of being intrinsically multiconfigurational.
We thus present a CI inspired route to self-consistently recouple single
determinant mixed configurations obtained from DFT, in order to obtain
approximate doublet states. This recoupling scheme is used to predict the C
K-edge spectra of the allyl radical, the O K-edge spectra of CO and the N
K-edge of NO to high accuracy relative to experiment, indicating
substantial promise in using this approach for computation of core-level
spectra for doublet species (vs more traditional time dependent DFT, EOM-CCSD
or using unrecoupled mixed configurations). We also present general guidelines

Valuable Journalism: The search for quality from the vantage point of the user
Many professional journalists and journalism scholars consider the increasing attention paid to audiences as one of the causes of the gradual loss of journalistic quality. They reason if ratings, circulation figures, hits and shares determine the content of journalism, the core values of journalism become jeopardized. This article argues how and why studies of journalistic quality should take the actual readers, listeners and viewers of journalistic texts seriously. It reports on a different kind of research for measuring the public's news interests and preferences; one that concentrates on value - what makes journalism precious for people and how news organizations can provide this. By zooming in on the professionals' and public's experience of quality information instead of their views on the topic, the article shows how pleasing the audience might be compatible with producing excellent journalism. © The Author(s) 2012
Design of a multicentered randomized controlled trial on the clinical and cost effectiveness of schema therapy for personality disorders
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite international guidelines describing psychotherapy as first choice for people with personality disorders (PDs), well-designed research on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of psychotherapy for PD is scarce. Schema therapy (ST) is a specific form of psychological treatment that proved to be effective for borderline PD. Randomized controlled studies on the effectiveness of ST for other PDs are lacking. Another not yet tested new specialized treatment is Clarification Oriented Psychotherapy (COP). The aim of this project is to perform an effectiveness study as well as an economic evaluation study (cost effectiveness as well as cost-utility) comparing ST versus COP versus treatment as usual (TAU). In this study, we focus on avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, histrionic and narcissistic PD.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>In a multicentered randomized controlled trial, ST, and COP as an extra experimental condition, are compared to TAU. Minimal 300 patients are recruited in 12 mental health institutes throughout the Netherlands, and receive an extensive screening prior to enrolment in the study. When eligible, they are randomly assigned to one of the intervention groups. An economic evaluation and a qualitative research study on patient and therapist perspectives on ST are embedded in this trial. Outcome assessments (both for clinical effectiveness and economic evaluation) take place at 6,12,18,24 and 36 months after start of treatment. Primary outcome is recovery from PD; secondary measures include general psychopathological complaints, social functioning and quality of life. Data for the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses are collected by using a retrospective cost interview. Information on patient and therapist perspectives is gathered using in-depth interviews and focus groups, and focuses on possible helpful and impeding aspects of ST.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This trial is the first to compare ST and COP head-to-head with TAU for people with a cluster C, paranoid, histrionic and/or narcissistic PD. By combining clinical effectiveness data with an economic evaluation and with direct information from primary stakeholders, this trial offers a complete and thorough view on ST as a contribution to the improvement of treatment for this PD patient group.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Netherlands Trial Register (NTR): <a href="http://www.trialregister.nl/trialreg/admin/rctview.asp?TC=566">NTR566</a></p
Software for the frontiers of quantum chemistry:An overview of developments in the Q-Chem 5 package
This article summarizes technical advances contained in the fifth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program package, covering developments since 2015. A comprehensive library of exchangeâcorrelation functionals, along with a suite of correlated many-body methods, continues to be a hallmark of the Q-Chem software. The many-body methods include novel variants of both coupled-cluster and configuration-interaction approaches along with methods based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction and variational reduced density-matrix methods. Methods highlighted in Q-Chem 5 include a suite of tools for modeling core-level spectroscopy, methods for describing metastable resonances, methods for computing vibronic spectra, the nuclearâelectronic orbital method, and several different energy decomposition analysis techniques. High-performance capabilities including multithreaded parallelism and support for calculations on graphics processing units are described. Q-Chem boasts a community of well over 100 active academic developers, and the continuing evolution of the software is supported by an âopen teamwareâ model and an increasingly modular design
Beyond the âMigrant Networkâ? Exploring assistance received in the migration of brazilians to Portugal and the Netherlands
This paper explores the tenability of three important critiques to the âmigrant
networkâ approach in migration studies: (1) the narrow focus on kin and community
members, which connect prospective migrants in origin countries with immigrants in
the destination areas, failing to take due account of sources of assistance beyond the
âmigrant networkâ like institutional or online sources; (2) that it is misleading to assume
a general pattern in the role of migrant networks in migration, regardless of contexts of
arrival or departure, including the scale and history of migration or the immigration
regime; and (3) that âmigrant networksâ are not equally relevant to all migrants, and that
important differences may exist between labour migrants and other types of migrants
like family migrants or students. Drawing on survey data on the migration of Brazilians
to Portugal and the Netherlands we find support for these critiques but also reaffirm the
