    Cooling and recombination processes in cometary plasma

    The ion electron plasma in comets is examined for cooling processes which result from its interactions with the neutral coma. A cometary coma model is formulated that is composed predominantly of H2O and its decomposition products where electrons are cooled in a variety of processes at rates varying with energy. It is shown that solar plasma plus accumulated cometary ions and electrons is affected very strongly as it flows into the coma. The electrons are rapidly cooled and all but some 10% of the ions undergo charge exchange. Photodissociation of H2O is assumed where ion electron recombination is the dominant loss process

    We introduce a stochastic model in which adjacent planar regions A,BA, B merge stochastically at some rate λ(A,B)\lambda(A,B), and observe analogies with the well-studied topics of mean-field coagulation and of bond percolation. Do infinite regions appear in finite time? We give a simple condition on λ\lambda for this {\em hegemony} property to hold, and another simple condition for it to not hold, but there is a large gap between these conditions, which includes the case λ(A,B)1\lambda(A,B) \equiv 1. For this case, a non-rigorous analytic argument and simulations suggest hegemony.Comment: 13 page

    Intrinsic hole mobility and trapping in a regio-regular poly(thiophene)

    The transport properties of high-performance thin-film transistors (TFT) made with a regio-regular poly(thiophene) semiconductor (PQT-12) are reported. The room-temperature field-effect mobility of the devices varied between 0.004 cm2/V s and 0.1 cm2/V s and was controlled through thermal processing of the material, which modified the structural order. The transport properties of TFTs were studied as a function of temperature. The field-effect mobility is thermally activated in all films at T<200 K and the activation energy depends on the charge density in the channel. The experimental data is compared to theoretical models for transport, and we argue that a model based on the existence of a mobility edge and an exponential distribution of traps provides the best interpretation of the data. The differences in room-temperature mobility are attributed to different widths of the shallow localized state distribution at the edge of the valence band due to structural disorder in the film. The free carrier mobility of the mobile states in the ordered regions of the film is the same in all structural modifications and is estimated to be between 1 and 4 cm2/V s.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure

    Post-operative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome and its association with hypertrophic olivary degeneration

    Background: The dentato-thalamo-cortical (DTC) pathway is recognized as the anatomical substrate for postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism (POPCMS), a well-recognized complication affecting up to 31% of children undergoing posterior fossa brain tumour resection. The proximal structures of the DTC pathway also form a segment of the Guillain and Mollaret triangle, a neural network which when disrupted causes hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION). We hypothesize that there is an association between the occurrence of POPCMS and HOD and aim to evaluate this on MR imaging using qualitative and quantitative analysis of the ION in children with and without POPCMS. Methods: In this retrospective study we qualitatively analysed the follow up MR imaging in 48 children who underwent posterior fossa tumour resection for presence of HOD. Quantitative analysis of the ION was possible in 28 children and was performed using semi-automated segmentation followed by feature extraction and feature selection techniques and relevance of the features to POPCMS were evaluated. The diagnosis of POPCMS was made independently based on clinical and nursing assessment notes. Results: There was significant association between POPCMS and bilateral HOD (P=0.002) but not unilateral HOD. Quantitative analysis showed that hyperintensity in the left ION was the most relevant feature in children with POPCMS. Conclusions: Bilateral HOD can serve as a reliable radiological indicator in establishing the diagnosis of POPCMS particularly in equivocal cases. The strong association of signal change due to HOD in the left ION suggests that injury to the right proximal efferent cerebellar pathway plays an important role in the causation of POPCMS.     Estimation of aboveground biomass of a production forest reserve in Malaysian Borneo using K-nearest neighbor method

    This study examined the use of the k-nearest neighbour (k-NN) method to estimate aboveground biomass of a logged-over tropical forest in Sabah, Malaysia. To estimate aboveground biomass, field data as well as digital number and normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) values from Landsat TM-5 data were used to determine the optimum horizontal reference area and the number of reference sample plots (k). An accuracy assessment showed that enhancing the digital number value was superior to enhancing the NDVI value. Root mean square errors of no filtering and 3 × 3 filtering were minimum when k = 4 and k = 5 respectively, when a horizontal reference area of 17 km was applied. The bias was underestimated by 2.01 and 1.62 tonnes ha-1 for k = 4 and k = 5 respectively. Total aboveground biomass of the forest management unit estimated by enhancing the digital number value was 6,873,299 tonnes and average biomass density was 248.8 tonnes ha-1. The results suggest that the k-NN method is an alternative way to estimate and map aboveground biomass of a forest management unit

    Effect of dead space on avalanche speed

    The effects of dead space (the minimum distance travelled by a carrier before acquiring enough energy to impact ionize) on the current impulse response and bandwidth of an avalanche multiplication process are obtained from a numerical model that maintains a constant carrier velocity but allows for a random distribution of impact ionization path lengths. The results show that the main mechanism responsible for the increase in response time with dead space is the increase in the number of carrier groups, which qualitatively describes the length of multiplication chains. When the dead space is negligible, the bandwidth follows the behavior predicted by Emmons but decreases as dead space increase

    Integer polyhedra for program analysis

    Polyhedra are widely used in model checking and abstract interpretation. Polyhedral analysis is effective when the relationships between variables are linear, but suffers from imprecision when it is necessary to take into account the integrality of the represented space. Imprecision also arises when non-linear constraints occur. Moreover, in terms of tractability, even a space defined by linear constraints can become unmanageable owing to the excessive number of inequalities. Thus it is useful to identify those inequalities whose omission has least impact on the represented space. This paper shows how these issues can be addressed in a novel way by growing the integer hull of the space and approximating the number of integral points within a bounded polyhedron

    Statistical study of precipitating electrons

    Energy spectra of precipitating electrons are fitted to the sum of three distributions: a power law, a Maxwellian and a Gaussian. This fitting procedure determines seven parameters which characterize the essential features of each spectrum. These characteristic parameters are used to carry out various studies involving precipitating electrons. It is shown that the absence of the power-law population from a particular spectrum is related to the softness of the precipitating primary flux, that the Maxwellian temperature and the Gaussian peak energy have a positive correlation the strength of which varies with local time, that the upward moving Gaussian population has a loss cone distribution, and that the one dimensional velocity distribution parallel to the magnetic field occasionally displays a plateau or a hump on the tail
